The sound and videos for these bands I really enjoyed. I see my CD collection and Amazon account growing once again. Thanks for providing the links, which further fuelled my curiosity and found myself clicking on some of Dark Moor’s videos. I really enjoyed their Swan Lake. Really Cool.

I LOVE everything by Dark Moor!!!! This is one of my favorite Dark Moor songs. (Original Singer)

I am also a BIG Fairyland fan. Same female singer as Dark Moor's original singer on a few of these.

I love Dark Moor. Was very sad when Eliza Martin left but their newer material is also very good. If you like her work then you may like this:

I'm glad this thread is working out so well. Thanks to last_candle for starting it. I love introducing people to different music and regardless of what some people think, there is a lot of variation between power metal bands and very few are actually the rainbows and unicorns type. Personally I prefer bands that take other influences from from different genres and give their music a bit of bite.

So I thought I would take the time to go through my collection and pick out an assortment of the lesser known (but good) bands that some may not have heard before.

    Abstrakt Algebra - Shadow Play

Just for the record Paul (I think you know this anyways but just using your quote as launch pad) and any other big PM fans, although I've very much enjoyed jumping on the rainbow, unicorn humour train, I seriously don't mean anything by it even for a second. I've rocked out to a fair bit of power metal bands and have long been the type to look for the good and do my best to ignore the not-so-good about any music I listen to. I've enjoyed many of the links in this thread and hope they keep coming. I don't have license to speak for anyone else but am pretty sure the rest of the jokesters, even Kevin, all mean well in a friendly, metal brethren manner also.

I think it's safe to say that just about everyone on this forum is open minded enough to listen to anything people suggest. Can't speak for all PM fans on the forum but I think the power metal jokes have been pretty funny I don't mind them much at all.

Man, when those first Kiuas and Hibria albums came out, I raved about them for ages and ages and ages to my mates, I was certain that those two bands would redefine the future of modern power metal. Looking back, both Spirit of Ukko and Defying the Rules are pure A+ class material, but it's a shame they never were able to follow up and really take the reins of the scene. I liked the second Hibria album quite a bit, but the newest one sounds so tired. I tried really hard to like the next two Kiuas albums and while they both had some great tracks, they simply weren't as wild, unforgiving and explosive as the debut. The lastest Kiuas disk didn't do anything for me at all.

However, I was blessed by the gods two summers ago when Hibria came through Canada(!) on tour playing the smallest, shittiest pubs they could possibly find. I saw them in this rat-hole in Edmonton about 5 minutes walk from my house. They had no light show, one monitor and a tiny stage but their were absolutely mindblowing. They played to 40ish people like it was a sold-out festival crowd, It stands somewhere in my top 5 gigs of all time. There are rumours floating around that they will return to Canada next year with Stormwarrior. FUCK!

That's pretty cool. I had a similar experience with Primal Fear. The one time they played Ireland there were only about 30-40 people making 2 rows of people at the front of the stage. But they still played a great show regardless.

WOW! loads of bands/songs to listen to
thanks for the participation and the sharing of (what might be) "hidden gems", especially to Paul
I'm by far not through all the links; I just started and get "distracted" by the suggestions on youtube
right now I'm listening for the first time to X Japan
they aren't that unknown, but their music never crossed my path...and I like it quite much
    X Japan - Silent Jealousy
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jwLLud5Ims

it's something I already knew, but listening to those songs confirmed it once more: the voice of the singer is a KO criteria
there are a few types of vocalists I just can't enjoy listening to; with Power Metal is the squeeking
but I couldn't handle a dozen of new bands anyway...so I'm glad if I end up with two or three new bands
    wishlist '25:
    Axxis - Doro - Edguy - Frozen Crown - Gatekeeper - Satan - Seven Sisters - Shadowpath - Silex - Skyclad - Steel Attack - Viathyn - Voyager - Wuthering Heights - 4th Dimension

Like I said, I love introducing people to new bands. I've been listening to power metal for 10 years at this stage and unfortunately the genre is over-saturated with very mediocre bands and a lot of recycled riffs and melodies so I am always happy to try point people in the right direction and show that it is actually a surprisingly diverse genre when you filter out the crap :P

Checked out that X Japan song. I really liked it. I think I may have to look into them.

Ha! Me too! As far as power metal goes at least! :P Except for some of the power metal bands that have been mentioned over time on this 70K forum (and some who I became familar with /saw because of the cruise)... most of the bands linked on THIS thread so far, I do not know of AT ALL! I'm funny/strange with my listening habits though. Most often in recent years I tend to focus on a relatively small group of bands at any given time that is usually tied to shows I'm going to/have just been to. In addition, something might jog my memory about a band or even just a song that I loved very much at some point in my past and I revisit it (like Jeff Buckley this weekend). Or, of course, there are bands that I hear just a few songs of, go nuts over, and then want/need to hear everything they've done! Right now, though, my music plate is somewhat full...think I might have to "back burner" the power metal for now...although I will get to it eventually - thanks for the links everyone!

Some of that stuff is borderline "Power metal" though :) As much as I love Lunatica I would label them more melodic/symphonic. Just a technicality though - it is very difficult to drawn the line between sub-genres.

Good to see Twilightning get some love - Delirium Veil was a great album. Great cover, great songs....shame they split up.

I know Crimson Glory has been mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but I don't think they've been mentioned in this thread yet, have they?

I bought "Transcendence" on CD back in 1988 when I was first discovering power metal. Yep 23 years ago  And that CD still gets listened to. BRILLIANT BRILLANT album.

Their new stuff is just as bombastic.. but nothing really has the same feel as "Of Wars is Ossyriah" in my opinion. Maybe it's the female vocals.. or the 'new band innocence/charm'

All this talk of Fairyland reminded me of another Power Metal album - Stairyway to Fairyland by Freedom Call.

Such a cheesy title, but it really fits the album :P

Its everything that people like Kevin love to hate about Power Metal - cheesy lyrics, over the top music etc.... but I LOVE IT :D

Not a bad album. Crystal Empire in my opinion is one of the best power metal albums of all time. Finally managed to catch them live last year in Berlin when they toured with Axel Rudi Pell, both bands giving a top performance. As over the top they are, it's always great to see a band that can pull off great vocal harmonies live.

quite a few bands I listen to are labeled "Power Metal", though I'd say they are 'just' Heavy Metal; seems like for some people Power Metal is quite open in one or the other direction - but I stopped bothering...

they sound exactly how powermetal-haters describe Power Metal :D I once had repeat-the-song ON and didn't notice it for quite a while
most fun intro to a song: "Oh, you're trying to fool me...pitiful you are...and meaningless"

HAHA!! And I thought I was was the only one who ever heard of them. I have all their albums. Really love them. Kinda of a gay name though. Well not very metal anyway.

most likely it's the 'new band innocence/charm' mentioned by Jake that worked for me

---never really liked Freedom Call, they are just too much for me; but they are fine to have on a festival or as a supporting act
    wishlist '25:
    Axxis - Doro - Edguy - Frozen Crown - Gatekeeper - Satan - Seven Sisters - Shadowpath - Silex - Skyclad - Steel Attack - Viathyn - Voyager - Wuthering Heights - 4th Dimension

    you have a point here, I listed'em anyway :)

I feel exactly the same. Most of the bands I put up are often labeled Power Metal although they are as much Heavy Metal. But hey, good music is good music so it doesn't matter... :headbanger:

What was and what will be
Posted on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Another year, another message. Here, as promised a little while ago, the ultimate report about what we were dealing with the past few months and what to expect for the upcoming year.

I assume everyone reading these lines has had a chance to discover At the Edge of Time and hopefully still enjoys it as much as we do. The very positive feedback we have gotten worldwide is of course a strong motivation for us. As said at other places before, we consider this album as the perfect connection between new and old. It contains a little bit of everything but still has a strong musical thread running throughout and offers us many options for our next projects.

It is no surprise when I tell you that the next journey will certainly lead us into an even more classical direction. There will be a few more trips to Prague necessary to finalize all orchestral recordings for our classical project but all things must come to an end eventually. The result of the stuff we have already recorded keeps me in a very good and optimistic mood, even though I consider the wait until the project’s completion very painful. Charlie [Bauerfeind] and I nonetheless will start working on the first vocal recordings during the next days. Since we will be interrupted by quite a lot of upcoming shows I would be happy if I were to find myself in a position to finish the first five songs vocalwise before the year is over. It is challenging stuff for everyone. One fine day, all of a sudden, when no one expects it, I will announce its completion. Certainly not within the next twelve months, but one very, very fine day.

From one long-term project to another. As we had time to share some serious moments with each other during the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise (somewhere on the oceans of time) Jon [Schaffer; Iced Earth & Sons of Liberty] and I had finally found the chance to put our minds together for a possible next Demons & Wizards album. We cheerfully simultaneously announced our wish to start working on it as quickly as possible. Although time is an issue for both of us we nonetheless decided to start songwriting together during the European summer festival season when Jon will be in Europe for Iced Earth performances. During that season we will use every possible moment to complete as much material as possible. To guarantee a good-mood-songwriting feeling I have already saved some good bottles of red wine and a smaller amount of Johnny Walker black label in our studio. :-) Things are still in the mist but we are about to recognize structures of a busy future.

As for the people who have bought the limited edition and may have started wondering about the promised additional stuff on the connected media page I can, one more time, promise that your waiting will soon be over and all your doubts about the value of having such questionable access will be erased. We have several things we are about to accomplish during the next days. Once finished we will make an official announcement telling you when the material will be available for download.

Apart from having worked on some remixes of the new stuff we obviously were able to catch a lot of impressions from our time on the road during the last months. Touring in all these European and Northern American venues was a definite blast and we cannot wait to hit the next countries and cities fairly soon. As we recorded most of the shows we have played so far, I can tell you that there have been a number of outstanding magic moments. I mostly was impressed by the great response the new stuff has gotten. Even when we toured in the early nineties it usually took one round to establish new material. But that is not the case with any of the new ones we played. They immediately got very significant responses each night. Another approval for their quality, I dare to say. Of course, we will try to come up with more new songs for the shows we are going to play during the next months. Since we have some time to waste until then we have decided to work on even more songs to be performed for these shows. I will keep it a secret which songs we are working on… though it won ‘t be many, I have to confess. Yes, I know how to spoil a story. It ‘s one of my best qualities – apart from looking cool while sitting on a chair. ;-)

    Enjoy life.

I really hope he has a big influence on their songwriting. I was delighted to finally see Kiske perform last summer with Unisonic in Czech Rep. The music wasn't bad but didn't strike me as anything special. Although, they did do an amazing version of Helloween's classic A Little Time which was the highlight of the show for me.
