    Re: The Power Metal Thread

 With the recent uptick in power metal jokes....I decided to look at this thread (first time!!) Lots of funny par-for-the-course 70K forum GOLD!

I have to honestly say power metal music and even the term itself was not on my radar WHATSOEVER (or so I thought)  until I got on this forum over a year ago. Up until now, in fact, I had never even looked at a "list" of what was/is considered "power metal." Don't know if all you power metal folks would agree with this list - but here's a fairly long list from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_metal_bands (shit - that's a lot of bands! )
So I scanned the list to see which, if any, I have listened to or have seen. So, out of this huge list, not too many....they are:

Alestorm (seen 'em 2x, think they're fun/that's about it),
Blind Guardian (because of the cruise; their Chorus Line theater gig was actually a real highlight of the cruise for me, love their album Imaginations From the Other Side),
Gamma Ray (because of the cruise - liked them but not as much as BG),
Grave Digger (saw them do about 4/5 songs at WOA - entertaining),
Iced Earth (because of the cruise - bought and love their album The Dark Saga),
Iron Maiden (saw them at WOA - not much of a fan but enjoyed their performance very much!!),
Kamelot (big fan for a few years),
Nightwish (big fan for about 3 years),
Rage (because of the cruise - bought and like their album Perfect Man album),
Running Wild (saw them at WOA - not much of a fan but they put on a good show),
Sabaton (because of the cruise - not a huge fan of their music - but they put on one hellava great show!!),
Sanctuary (because of the cruise - bought and love their album Into the Mirror Black),
Sonata Arctica (saw them open for Nightwish/missed them on the cruise - music is just ok although I haven't listened to much of it),
Symphony X (huge fan of one album in particular - Divine Wings of Tragedy)
Wuthering Heights (recently bought Salt - not a huge fan but this album is still entertaining)

I think the 70K forum discussions prior to the cruise and then seeing several of the "power metal" bands on the cruise was really great - which underscores a good point - I always think it's better to at least expose yourself to something rather than just writing it off altogether. Your just never know what you might end up liking!!!! And if you don't - then you leave it at that and move on! :P

So Wikipedia is where you get your walls of text! Busted!

Seriously though, you do make a good point. People are very quick to shoot things down without even giving them a chance.

well in defense to my stance, I was at the BG gig and was on the pool deck during the Iced Earth one. Ah, and also at Sonata Arctica (well behind the stage), since the people I was with liked all three. The vocals are just not for me.

    Laura, you're amazing...like always

I'm definitely PRO giving different things a chance - but if you just don't like one kind of singing for example...you most likely would end up disliking it anyway
(it sometimes works for people who never listened to metal and all - and then realize it's not that bad after all)
but I have no problem admitting that I don't invest much time in stuff I don't like
then again, sometimes you get to know a band that isn't exactly your cup of tea (yet)...but you recognize the quality and stick to it until you're more familiar with the 'unknown style'...

KDibildox, is it just the high pitched vocals you don't like...or clean singing in general?

Aw shucks, Simon – you're nice as always. :D And, of course, I have you to thank for the Blind Guardian album recommendation (Imaginations from the Other Side)

I totally understand where you’re coming regarding certain vocal styles being a total “deal-breaker”….if the sound is not appealing to one’s unique individual brain from the get-go (beginning), I don’t think any amount of listening to it is going to change that…and that’s ok! I think I’ve probably told this story at least a half-dozen times here, :P but here goes again….I had never heard any death vocals until about 6 years ago…at an Opeth gig that I went to last minute (knowing none of their music) strictly on the fact that Steven Wilson (whose opinion I value) had worked with them and I knew he held them in very high esteem. So – went to the show and  BAM! In a nutshell – loved everything about it…especially the fact that Mikael in the course of one song could switch back and forth between that gorgeous “clean” voice of his and the death metal vocals – quite extraordinary in my view – had never heard anything like it…. and I was somewhat stunned for at least a few days. It was powerful to my senses in a very positive way. But that was my personal response to it. On the other hand, a few of my dearest prog-rock friends who love Porcupine Tree, Yes and all that kinda stuff as I do, don’t like Opeth (at least the songs with the death vocals) – the death growls are a total “deal-breaker” for them. Similarly, I’ve played At the Heart of Winter by Immortal for some classic rock oriented friends and family….a few have liked the killer riffs like in the beginning of the first song….but then Abbath starts “singing” and they’re like that’s it, this sucks, end of story, GAME OVER! Does anyone remember the old talent show on TV called “The Gong Show?”   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gong_Show In summary, most people I know would hit the gong almost immediately if they had one upon hearing Mikael, Abbath, and so on.

"deal breaker" - you're phrasing my thoughts perfectly

Opeth are just that damn good...and that's why I invested some time to get into their music
there still are quite a few songs I don't like very much - but on the other hand I got to know and love many songs
their shows are impressive - especially the switching back and forth of Mikael's voice
but since there aren't many things to sing along to - I can as well watch'em from the bar

Is there anything you like?

Stroopwafels, vegemite & My Dying Bride.

Works for me :heavydrink: :death: :heavydrink:

   dunno about the vegemite, haven't tried it.

As far as vocals, I like nice deep vocals on men *drool*, i.e. Peter Steele was one of my favorite vocalists. As for grunts, I like them especially combined with some clean vocals, added as emphasis, but for example, Hypocrisy I like as is. Also, low tuned guitars. So the answer is........ it depends

Though live I tend to like grunts and screams a lot more

The high pitched vocals (on males) and exaggerated vibratos. Drives me crazy (not in a good way).

I have many to add to that list including these that you added... ;)

A few that I can think of right now are Circus Maximus, Dream Evil, Crimfall, Seventh Wonder, Saint Daemon, Hamka, Powerglove, and Star One. So many on that list are categorized as both Power and/or Prog metal. Doesn't matter to me..I love them both! :D

Suppose you're right. I often get lost on that line between power and heavy metal due to so many bands having influences from both sides.

Defining genres annoys the crap out of me...

Shhh noone tell Marlo that 3 Inches has some old school power metal influence. She will bite your head off.

I saw a LOT of bands on there that are heavy/folk/progressive/speed metal that shouldn't REALLY be in this thread anyways but all the good power metal has a strong influence from one of those things. The new Hammerfall album is too over the top for me. Some songs are Ok but songs like "Let Get It On" I can't deal with. Immortalized is good, reminds me a lot of "Short As Hell" by Gamma Ray.

Wow, who would have thunk it? A power metal fan does have a "cheese limit" after all

Haha I have said this before, maybe not to you though. Hammerfall is hit and miss for me, such as "Riders On The Storm", etc. A lot of the time its the instruments or the melodies that are beyond my cheese limit rather than the lyrics. But unless it's Power Metal that still has speed/prog/heavy/folk/neoclassical influence I'm usually not a huge fan (live is another story). Even Sabaton I don't listen to much except a few songs but live they are amazing.

    Just how worthy exactly?

Wild, several hours long, late weekend night romp with multiple releases for all involved worthy or just quick, Tuesday night squeeze one off for good measure worthy? ;)

So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me
