I just wanted to write that I on the other hand am jealous about TSO - but they are coming to Europe next year...gotta check out where and when...
Edguy included "Avantasia" and "Chalice of Agony" in their shows - did you happen you be lucky enough to hear one of those?

Yes I did! :D I saw Edguy in a little dive bar last year. Only 75 people or so showed up. They played as though it was a crowd of 10,000 and it was my favorite time seeing them. Although, with the crappy turnouts we get here I doubt they will come back.

Speaking of poor turnouts. Same thing with Stratovarius. Maybe 200 people showed up in San Francisco. I happened to be up there for a training and got to see them in this mostly empty symphony hall.

That is cool you will get to see TSO next year. You get to see the Beethoven's Last Night tour!! :headbanger: I am still waiting for the America dates to be announced. Have not seen that one yet. I have seen the Christmas shows.

I am also lucky to have seen Jon Oliva's Pain a few times. Once with Circle II Circle and they did a bunch of Savatage songs together. That was really badass!

I prefer Beethoven's Last Night over every other TSO release...and that by far
unfortunately, I missed the Circle II Circle show a few weeks ago - but they'll be back

talking about Jon Oliva, the one Avantasia song with him on vocals is one of top two songs out of the two new albums!

that's one of Edguy's qualities: they give their best no matter how many attend the show

Just seen Blind Guardian on Friday, and yes it was AWESOME! I really enjoyed Holy Grail as well (they opened).
Next up is Watain/Goatwhore! Big surprise there, everyone seems to have seen this show but me. They come here on Saturday.
I am still considering attending Dimmu/Enslaved next month.....

Went to see Job for a Cowboy, Trigger the Bloodshed and Annotations of an Autopsy Friday night in Helsinki. JfaC was quite ok, but the other two were total crap. AoaA was the one I had big hopes for after listening to their album, but on stage they were nowhere near death metal. A lumberjack-looking vocalist with a baseball cap on, backwards of course, didn't exactly seem death metalish and fair enough, they sounded like any crappy core act around. TtB wasn't much better either.

Ah, both encouraged the audience to do circle pits and wall of deaths numerous times during their half-hour sets. Idiotic music for idiotic people.

how much better can it get?
    Avantasia per se
half of Heavens Gate on stage
three of the best vocalists (Michael Kiske, Bob Catley, Jorn Land)
2 1/2 hours of awesome songs
    perfect location with perfect sound

...I just don't know yet how to grab two beers at the bar and still make it to the front row ;)

I so contemplated flying to Japan to see Avantasia - I love Bob Catley and would kill to hear his golden voice live.

But, what with 70,000 Tons and the $$$$ its costing for the two of us to get to the US, Japan was out of the question.

HAHAHA!!! Well he is almost 70 :-)

I love him to bits - such an amazing voice. I pretty much have every CD he's ever appeared on!! All of Magnum's stuff, his solo work, Hard Rain, Nolan & Wakeman, Avantasia. Cannot get enough of him :)

I love him to bits - such an amazing voice. I pretty much have every CD he's ever appeared on!! All of Magnum's stuff, his solo work, Hard Rain, Nolan & Wakeman, Avantasia. Cannot get enough of him :)

I still haven't really listened to his previous releases.
    Any suggestions where to start?

the second Avantasia gig was fantastic, too
today, I was close to the stage and had a better view
it's such a nice thing to have decent people around you that just want to enjoy the show like you do
once again, it wasn't totally sold out - so you had some space to jump and sing and scream

    next gig:
    EAV - Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung
...is there anybody who knows them?
they are an Austrian "Fun Band" who had quite some success like twenty years ago
we all grew up with those songs and it's good to have'em back on stage

Ok, so I went to probably one of the most extreme shows I have ever been to.... and I mean 'extreme', not violent, not even close to most brutal or violent, but simply extreme.

The main 3 were... Black Anvil, then Goatwhore, then Watain headling..... the band I like most of these is Goatwhore of course, they are a good mix of black metal, some death metal, and regular metal with some groove to it all in one. anyways... the whole place stunk of supposedly dead animal carcasses and blood..... Watain was a very fvkked up and evil band, a gimmicky set perhaps but extremely evil. There were large pikes with candles lit and rotting animal skulls(these of course added to the smell already in the room, but were still interesting looking, I think they were either large bird heads or maybe goat heads? not sure what animals they were), they were put on spikes attached to them, plus chains, huge upside down crosses, etc. I was right up front and the vocalist 'baptized' lots of the crowd with the putrid smelling animal blood.... not to mention that everyone in the band had lots of it on them with their ripped, torn, frayed, leather fvkked up clothes.... when the singer would headbang, more of the animal blood was coming off his hair and right onto me. Then towards the end... my left hand I had been supporting myself from the great evil metal fans behind me with my hands on the stage and the PA speaker... the 'lead' guitarist stomped his boot right down on my finger (on the PA) before starting a solo... so not only did I have lots of animal blood on me but also lots of my own blood as a good portion of skin was torn of my left ring finger.... I stood there, kind of pissed, but at the same time kind of satisfied of this dark music and show... I held my left hand with my right for the next 5 minutes very tight to stop the bleeding of course getting more of my own blood on myself in the process.... meanwhile still banging my head throughout the show when I could.... I had already given my all a lot during Black Anvil, one of the first bands earlier (Immortal Decay)... and then Goatwhore I was going apeshit... I hadn'thad dinner and from all of the concert noise and from drinking a lot had a headache as I stood there watching this show with blood all over myself. I did drink a lot last night before the show and then some more at the beginning... (bless the Jager reps when they come to shows and give out free shots!).... Anyways, it was an awesome show and perhaps the most extreme I have been to. Imprinted on my memory will forever be the foul stench of rotting death while I was at the show.....

Tonight is my night off from concerts.

Tomorrow night (12/2) I will see one of my all time faves.... CHIMAIRA! There will not be any need for drinks for this one as I will be in a frenzy, a craze, in oblivion as Chimaira tears up the stage yet again, my 13th time to see them :shred: :shred: :shred: :shred: :shred:

First time to see Daath and I do like them a lot as well. Very catchy and at the same time brutal, and great guitar work.

^^^^ what a great review of the Watain, et al gig - both in content and style, Kent! (your real name if I remember correctly) Made me feel like I was there :beerhorns: (I skipped the Chicago gig a few weeks back) The most extreme show I've been to in recent years was Marduk a year ago and it was awesome. As I said earlier on this thread, however, the whole Watain schtick "stink factor" plus the blood perhaps crosses my weird threshold a tad - :? I think anything extreme for extreme's sake can be interesting and intriguing, though.....hmmmm.

Having said that, I LOVE Goatwhore and would have gone just to see them had I been free that Sunday night. They are one of the best live bands I've seen, period. :metalguy:

    Thanks Laura! (yes, it's Kent :) )

Yes, Goatwhore is great. Picked up one of their shirts.... I am getting more and more into them! As a vocalist... I think he is a great vocalist! Balls out! :metalguy:

Yes, I went to Marduk last year as well... that was very evil as well and I actually moshed in that show, slipped on a beer spill and must have bruised my knee bone because my knee hurt for 3 months after that, finally all of a sudden the pain went away. that was dark as well.. first show I went to with a very steady and strong "Hail Satan" chant. However, the extremeness of the Marduk show was probably only half of the Watain show. Acting or not, those guys (Watain) actually felt 'evil'. There was no chatter or anything or smiles. The vocalist at least looked some possessed , though that can be good acting.

The Watain show went late last night... got home around 130am (and it was only 15 mins away from where I live)... I smelled horrible that I actually took a shower before I would even dare lay down on my sheets.. I was also completely famished so after I showered made a good plate of leftoves and ate a healthy portion of food for my dinner at 2am. finally went to bed at 2:40, got up at 6:30 and took another shower and went to work. I am exhausted and about to go to bed so tomorrow night I have energy for the Chimaira show. It is at Jaxx in northern, VA which is 60 miles from here. so I have a good drive (didn't have to drive last night, but am driving tomorrow with another friend), I am driving, then there are 7 bands (probably miss 1, maybe 2). This show probably won't end until 1am either so I will get home after 2am. I already took off the day on Friday for this reason, so at least I can sleep in. However I need to go to bed now so I can stay awake after the show tomorrow night to make the long drive home.

Also, today, I found this very strange... even though I showered twice and washed my hands many times... my left palm still has a smell of the foul animal blood from last night. A Friend suggested that maybe because of the smoke (they had a shit-ton of smoke all throughout the show) from the show and all I was smelling it because it was still in my nose... however if this were true , then anything else I smell, like my arm, or right palm, or anything would also smell like the blood. But they do not. It is ONLY my left hand palm that still somehow smells like the blood.......even right now...

I'm pretty sure that the guitarist mashed a unique mixture of various animal bodily fluids into your bloodstream when he smashed it with his boot. No doubt you'll soon start sprouting fur in unusual places and the headaches will increase until you feel the short nubs of two small horns forcing their way through the flesh of your skull.

We'll be sure to bring a few bails of hay along on the cruise so you don't go hungry ;)
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

No gigs to report (although hopefully going to see a few local shows this weekend including a Dimebag tribute from the likes of West of Hell and others)...

Just posting to move us beyond the evil of Jake's 666th post and back into the realms of the more benevolently Divine :beerwink:
