This is really great - cool part-psychedelic sound & influence. I really like how some current bands like Ghost and The Devil's Blood are doing the retro thing.

Speaking of psychedelic/space rock....I've been listening to a lot of Hawkwind lately (them, Negura Bunget, Skrillex, and Death Cab for Cutie which makes for an odd  combo imo) - to me Hawkwind is one of the best bands ever (if not the best) of that ilk. I bought this 3 cd 30 year anthology ("best of") several years ago and I love it.

This is really cool too - especially like the first minute moody & atmospheric beginning.

Cool! I don't know many people who even know of Hawkwind. ;) Oddly, I didn't really know of them until about 7 years ago (when some folks were talking about them on the Porcupine Tree UK forum). I might have heard the name before that, but none of my friends or I were familiar with them or had any of their albums growing up back in the 70s. Anyway, I'm enjoying them a lot now. I remember when I first looked at their discography and I was stunned - (according to wikipedia) - 25  Studio albums, 9 live albums, 13 compilation albums, and 4 eps! So, I cheaped out and just bought the 3 CD anthology. Good to know about some of your fave albums.

A few friends of mine are huge prog rock fans and saw Hawkwind at Nearfest (PA) in 2007 ( http://www.nearfest.com/pastlineups.asp ). Nearfest was actually a bucket list fest for me, but I recently found out this is the last year. Oh well. Would have been cool to see Van der Graf Generator http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_der_Graaf_Generator and Änglagård http://www.anglagard.net/ in particular.

So, I've got the house to myself tonight :P since the family already went downstate to the inlaws for Easter (I had to work today, but will take the train early in the morning to join them)....so it's BLACK METAL night at Laura's house.  As I've stated before, my family does not understand my obsession with this music, so I'm fairly low-key about it when they are around. ;)

    Aaaanyway.....
speaking of low-key - it was a very low-key day at work today which I thought needed some perking up - so I bought (cold, i.e. had not even sampled) three new black metal albums on iTunes which I have been enjoying immensely.

    Taake: Hordalands Doedskvad (2005)

    Taake: Noregs Vaapen (2011)

fantastic song and video from this album: Nordbunget (complete with very nice nice bleak Norwegian landscape scenes ;) ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAIIbnrYC7Q

and (finally! since I will see them this Friday) ....
    Watain: Lawless Darkness (2010)
    Image

incredible live performance of Waters of Ain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXexYcPoKSc
had never youtubed Watain till today and I'm like  - amazing...totally blowing me away. My favorite part of this very long song begins around 9:20 until the end.

I had a real epiphany today - that of ALL the musical genres I've ever listened to since I was a little kid - black metal is my favorite. Until today, I could easily say it was my favorite metal genre - but then I realized it's really my favorite, period....it's the strongest, most powerful, most meaningful music I've ever heard. I read a book last fall about how different people hear sound and/or music and how individual that is depending on so many factors having to do with one's brain chemistry, personality, personal history, tastes, and so on. All I can say is that certain sound qualities in black metal are so special and different than anything else when I hear it. So, the sound on it's own is really special already, but then when one adds the whole visual aspect of BM - which, when it comes down to it (in my mind anyway) - has extremely obvious fetishistic qualities ;) - it is an unparalleled combination of sound & vision.

I'm definitely a huge black metal fan as well, even though there's sub genre's within this genre itself. i.e. I enjoy Watain and Burzum et al (although Varg can go fuck himself), my favorite bands in this arena tend to be more like Windir :beerhorns: , Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice etc.
Life would be tragic if it weren't funny.

And yes, that is the beauty of it....there is a lot of variety to the genre - at least the way bands are labelled (but to be honest - outside of a general atmospheric kinda "black metal" aesthetic - I find the music - of say - Agalloch, Negura Bunget and Wolves in the Throne Room really, really different than the symphonic bombast of Dimmu Borgir or the (latter day) totally blackened outrageous awesome punk of Kvelertak.

Ummm...and I must admit I've never listened to Windir or Krallice. (adds to future listen to list ;) ) I am perhaps unusual in that I listen to new music in a very concentrated way - a relatively small amount at a time. It is the only way I can seem to really appreciate, hear, or absorb it properly. I think partly because no matter what I hear or how different it seems on the surface to other things I've heard and loved, there is always some kind of ECHO or reference to something I've heard or experienced before - so I like to hear it and absorb it slowly...and find that connection.

oh and re: Carach Angren - I do own the album Death Came Through a Phantom Ship which is really cool but for some reason I don't seem to gravitate to it as much as some other bands/albums (even though they do make me think of a DB clone which is not a bad thing) ;)

hehe - I read the cover story of Decibel about the tour and Watain and The Devil's Blood are definitely going to use/wear as body paint pig's blood - no mention of animal carcasses so hopefully not too bad of a smell due to that. I'm fairly certain that the guys in Finland's Archgoat were "adorned" in real blood of some sort when I saw them in Norway - but, as far as I know/could tell, blood in and of itself does not have a smell unless it's "spoiled" (old/not refrigerated) - ha - I think the Decibel article quoted the Watain guy as saying they would replenish their supply by various means. 'Ya know - the whole blood thing most likely makes most most people squirm, but I think in the black metal context, it is really powerful.

Can you imagine what their tour bus must smell like  Would be interesting to see a camera crew follow the band around as they search for a supply of blood and meat parts for the tour

Earlier on this thread I mentioned I had finally bought and watched the documentary Until the Light Takes Us and since Fenriz is one of the main guys interviewed in it - decided I finally needed to listen to some Darkthrone (I believe they & Gorgoroth are the only really big names in black metal that I haven't listened to at all yet (although I think I have youtubed Gorgoroth once or twice. There are many other bands out there of course that I haven't gotten around to yet, but will all in good time. :beerwink:

So, based on a fb and some other conversations with Darkthrone fans, decided to buy this one first - it's funny/strange to me that this album is 20 years old already! Just bought it so it will be my musique du jour.

Aye, GL with Darkthrone. They have some cool punk vibes to them but never got into them. Me and mooyagi are split on Ghaalgoroth vs Gorgoroth. Me for the first so if you are shooting old school on that I bow out to him. I don't dislike the old stuff but prefer when the production and deliverance grew some balls (Oh Ghaal! ).

For second wave or trüe black metal I will always vote for Burzum. But will spare the pissing and moaning on that one. :beerwink:

Yea, there is the stench of gimmick. Watain are a good BM band to me but never stood solely on musical merit till more the latest and greatest. Think a lot of the growing popularity is their GG Allin freak show approach though GG Allin trumps these gents by comparison (Would you rather get him with animal blood or human shit of the lead singer? hmmm, quite the dilemma of entertainment). Let chaos ensue, I'll certainly enjoy it. :beerwink:

Bumpin my fave thread with some good news (cigarette juice?):

New Nachtmystium track "As Made" stream

Discuss? My 2 cents it sounds a lot like a Ministry track off filth pig. Hmmmm. I like Filth Pig but this eh.

Or even more this as a commentor pointed out on IO.

This is uncomfortably close to “The Missing” by Ministry:

Ha - yep that is pretty similar. ;) Big Ministry fan here (seeing them end of June for the first time)....I saw Nachtmystium once, but don't know their music really at all.

I've meaning to post this for awhile and it belongs on the Rammstein thread I suppose, but what the hell, I'll put it here. Talking about similarities....2 songs from 2 of my favorite bands (and for the record - the Die Krupps song came first.) I don't really care really...I love both bands and songs. :D

You check out the new ministry yet? Al shoulda ended ministry. I prefer this one over the new ;)

I was going to start an industrial/industrial metal thread since you  brought up Ministry, and write a big wall o text ;) - but haven't gotten around to for some reason....so, in short  ....
Ministry is a great band andI I like them very much - but I must admit I'm basing my opinion on the fact that I only own and know really well four albums - With Sympathy (1983) - one of my *very* favorite albums from the 80s which I bought on vinyl when it came out, Land of Rape and Honey(1988), The Mind is a Terribe Thing to Taste (1989), and Psalm 69(1992). And ha! That last one is from 20 years ago and I know Al has put out a lot more music since then. Since I'm seeing them at long last in June, really need to listen to the later stuff in a concentrated way - with so many albums and a new one to boot (which I haven't heard btw yet), I have no idea what kind of set-list they'll do. Also - I think this is a "final" tour (although I think Al has said that before). Regardless, I'm really looking foward to the show - the Vic Theater is right across the street from an apartment (now condo) building that I lived in from around 1985-89 and relatively close to many of the great Chicago clubs of that era (which of course played a lot of Ministry tunes -Everyday is Halloween being a staple ;) ). So, it will be in part one of those nostalgic/memory lane kinda nights that I always enjoy for old time's sake. I wish Al would have done at least one more synthpoppy/new waveish album like With Sympathy before he switched gears - he was so *great* in that style - fake British accent and all. :P (even though I do like the other albums I have very, very much - can't really compare them to WS - they're so different).

Love the lyrics to the (released as a) single Everyday is Halloween

oh....and you mentioned Laibach :D :D - love Laibach and they were another band I heard a lot in the Chicago clubs in the 1980s along with Ministry....below is a cut and paste from the New Bands Recently Discovered thread when I brought up Parzival who I think is similar to Laibach. And weird Laibach connection recently...a woman from London who I met in Norway last summer at HITS recently posted on facebook that she was seeing Laibach in London and I responded - what??? THE Laibach as in the Slovenian Laibach??? And she said yes and later posted pix from the gig. Well, damn - that gig would have been about the coolest thing ever - from their website.... http://www.laibach.nsk.si/rec.htm
    MONUMENTAL RETRO-AVANT-GARDE CONCERT IN LONDON
Laibach is announcing special retrospective concert performance in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London, on April 14th, at 22:00h.

(*gasps* ...at the Tate Modern - that would have been awesome)

Np on the wall of text, haha. Finally getting some of my life back here now that I finished my masters degree (last paper was a bitch). Yea, I recently heard "With Sympathy" and was surprised how good of a slab of synthpop it was. I always hear Al disowned the album cause the label put him up to it but think it is still good. Only goofy song is "what He Said" with the African sounding dude mumbling. I think the set you are in for will be very metal related and less industrial. My personal favorite is "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" minus the song "Test" (Again some dude rapping, uhg what was his obsession with that / guess it was the "cross-over" period ). So here is what you missed with my 2 cents!

Good albums but more of a metal Pink Floyd sound landscape with these than a frontal assault.
    Filth Pig (1996)
Dark Side of the Spoon (1999)
Animositisomina (2003) Best outta the 3 but I enjoyed Filth Pig as well.

"The Trinity" - Bush Jr. Years
Houses of the Molé (2004) - This was a mutation of Psalm 69. Many of the riffs and song titles share commonality of Psalm 69.
Tommy Victor of Prong enters the picture here on and brings a bag of slamming riffs. Felt he was a good injection to Al.
Rio Grande Blood (2006) - Lot of peoples fave but not here. Some good songs though. Senor Peligro and Khyber Pass my faves.
The Last Sucker (2007) MY favorite outta the trinity.
Riffage from Last Sucker to crack some skulls to:
    The Last Sucker - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LyF7yJ6NZs
    Let's Go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wi4_E9oQzc

Relapse (2012) - Listened to it a couple times and only weak cause The Last Sucker was a good farewell album. Some okay riffs but feel a bit flaccid. The sounds sticks with the "trinity" sound though.

And agree, I enjoy Laibach when in the mood. Though I only have Wat so it is my favorite by default, haha.

^^^ funny how the last post on this thread which segued into this thread viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2626 is about Ministry who I'm seeing tonight. (yay!)

    But Back to Black Metal.....

A Norwegian guy I met in Bergen last August messaged me a few days ago about a black metal band from Kopervik, Norway he thought I’d like (and this is the person who was responsible for turning me on to Kvereltak last fall – my fave new discovery of 2011) - so I took notice. ;)

    The band he mentioned is:

Just listened to a few songs so far – definitely my kinda thing. Haha – although I don’t think I’ve heard a Norwegian black metal band so far that I *didn’t* like.

From the new album Conquering Death just released a few weeks ago.
    And a Colder Breed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5LhgYVi ... re=related

    Ahoy Laura,

It is good though the orchestra/string parts seem to dwarf the band a little. I think I am pretty set in my black metal journey for a bit :D. I been finish a lot of my own tunes which is a journey in itself when having to do all the parts. But I enjoy it! I am trying to think of the last black metal band that I "discovered". Really just re-listening to many of good albums.

Been looking forward to the new Nachtmystium, new songs are excellent.

    My fave so far: http://soundcloud.com/centurymediarecor ... d-hope-and

Has a very desolate feel that I love and speaking of orchestra I like the use of (synth) horns. I feel they merge well with guitars, been something I been working into my material.

The other which is a bit more straight ahead BM vibe: http://soundcloud.com/centurymediarecor ... ng-machine

Still need to book the Barge!

Now it comes to me and more the last two black metal influenced songs that really made me feel something.

First the more traditional being "Enthroned - Petraolevm Salvia" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5TuBAFcF6w

Primitive as fuck but that is why I love it. Good band but can't speak for them making whole albums that I want to listen to.

The second and better of the two is from Abigail Williams new album. Speaking again of orchestra usage it is done well in this song.

    Beyond The Veil - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxpUQK7-2qQ

It is 17 minutes but is their magnum opus. Another band that I couldn't recommend a album but the song is excellent. Sadly (or gladly for BM elitist) they are done. I can't say I blame them as they've tour with every band that's come through here and still haven't taken. The last album was mediocre imo but this "becoming" album deserves more time from me. I really think it is well written and thought out.

I like the red color cover too. If you have time it is really worth a listen. Many beautiful melodies.
