    Metal covers?

    by Jemstar » Tue May 11, 2010 3:47 pm

What are some of your favorite metal covers of other songs (which may or may not be metal songs originally)?

I just stumbled upon this on Youtube via the "related videos" sidebar thing... I can't decide if it's amazing or hilarious.
    4045... hopefully?

I prefer the Flotsam and Jetsam version of that particular Elton John song. I've always likes WASP's version of The Who -The Real Me.

    List time;

Orange Goblin - Just Got Paid (ZZ Top) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqHawFO5qDY
Crowbar - Dream Weaver (Gary Wright) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0lQPri8bt4
Type-O - Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofts)

Pretty sad when Blackie's cover is about the same or possibly less inspiring than Nickelsuck's version of the same song. And it might just be the youtube upload but damn the guitars sound thin here.

When it comes to covers, I want the band to really put their stamp on it and make it theirs. Make it something new. That version just sounds sort of uninspired to me.

I like Crowbar's cover of Zeppelin's No Quarter but that one too has been done similarly by someone else before them, I just forget who atm.

I've enjoyed some albums full of covers that a few bands have done recently... Queensryche(Almost Cut My Hair), Ministry(Roadhouse Blues) and Rush(Mr. Soul) come to mind (fave cuts in brackets).

A favourite that comes to mind right now would be Wrathchild America's cover of Floyd's Time. Sort of contradicts my previous statement about making it something new though. All they really did was play it with more constant distorted/heavy guitars but it's such a classic song ya gotta love hearing it done well by anyone.
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

Type O did indeed do some great covers, in addition to "Summer Breeze"..

I mentioned it elsewhere, but my favorites are "Black Sabbath" and "Hey Pete (Hey Joe)" :death:
Have a good time...all the time.

I generally don't like cover songs at all. I remember as a kid being disappointed when I found out "Cum on Feel the Noise" by Quiet Riot was a cover. It took all it's cache away. I want to hear the original version of the song as that is usually the real one that is burned into my brain.

That being said, I do like Edge of Sanity's version of "Blood of My Enemies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_PuKv0BNNk

It's SWANO, so it has to be good. (one of my Rules of Metal) :D :D :D

I'd be remiss without mentioning Six Feet Under's desecration of AC/DC (and a slew of other bands). It's one thing to suck major balls with your own material, but it brings you into a whole other realm of shit when you cover a classic entire album, butcher it the way only SFU can, and sell it under your name.

Anyone who purchased that album should be thrown overboard. (this is the spot where I would normally place a  but I'm actually serious about this. Okay, maybe only partially ;) )

Which reminds me of one of my other Rules of Metal: Six Feet Under are god awful. Mere words or rules can't describe they horrificness)

There's a local metal band around my area that does a cover or Miley Cyrus's Kicking and Screaming...
Definitely interesting to hear and gets a pretty varying reaction from the crowd.

Therion's version of Abba's Summernight City is what I think a metal cover should be: it actually sounds like it was an original Therion song, but you definitely recognize the Abba song from it as well.

I can think of plenty, but I'll simply make a plug for Ten Masked Men and just about every song they've covered thus far. Death Metal versions of pop music? Sold :headbanger:

Those not familiar, do yourselves a favor and check them out for some laughs at: http://www.myspace.com/tenmaskedmen

You can also find plenty of their tunes on YouTube as well

That reminds me... Not quite Death metal but...

This band called Counterforce did an album called Pop Divas Go Metal where, if I understand correctly, they took the vocal tracks from a number of pop, hip-hop type songs such as Britney's Hit Me Baby (and many others by the likes of Aguilera and Houston etc) and set them to metal renditions of the songs themselves. Not something I'd spend much time actually listening to but a great way to expose the masses to music with a bit more balls to it.

I'd link ya to a youtube version but our systems admin guy recently blocked youtube from the office instead of just the kids' computer
