    RIP Ronnie James Dio

    by AlabastRDisastR » Sun May 16, 2010 3:48 am

    I started getting calls & texts around 2am this morning. Blabbermouth.com says that his wife has made a statement saying he's still alive, but I keep hearing from my friends that he's passed. Anyone know where they may be getting their information from?

    First Peter Steele, now this. Wtf. :cry:

    Fucking rumour mongers :evil:

    I sure hope this isn't a sign of a serious decline in his battle. The guy's 24 years older than me and I have more and more trouble fighting off a damn cold every year. Fuck I hope he beats this and is around for decades to come.

    Dio :(

    by MissMetal » Sun May 16, 2010 12:43 pm

    http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbe ... mID=140129
    Wendy Dio, wife/manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio (DIO, HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW), has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

    "Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away.

    :( It's a very sad day, indeed. There was a rumor early morning Sunday that he died, but that was later proved to be false. However this one is looking pretty official.

    fucking cancer, insidious disease. In the end we all gotta go eventually but to be taken by a disease when you still have so much to offer is a real tragedy, unlike all the dumbasses that have drank or drugged themselves to death, or better yet, eaten a shotgun. "Or poor me, I am the most successful musician alive, I just can't take it"

    RIP RJD

    Can't believe this just had to happen... such a grief.
    He was truly the best of it all.

    I fucking hate cancer. took my faves with it. piggy (voivod), chuck (death/control denied), and now the godfather of metal RJD.

    Unbelievable.......I've seen Dio 6 times throughout his solo career and 3 times with Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, some of the most memorable shows I've seen. Met him and got his autograph once during the Angry Machines tour.

    I know the man is not immortal but it's hard to believe he's gone. The rock/metal world will never be the same.

    Still in shock even though he'd been ill so long now. It just really seemed he'd win the fight. Been calling friends who I know are fans today and lettin' them know and the reaction is the same each time. Just shock and sadness. Like onenight said, shit just won't be the same now. Sort of feels like it marks the end of an era. Makes me feel old(er).

    Days like today I wish I still drank.

    I am on my 2nd captain and coke. First listened to "Holy Diver" album and now I am listening to Rainbow- Live on Stage (on vinyl)

    I cried when I went to blabbermouth and read all the tributes pouring in

    Dio's facebook page has almost 14,000 comments on the status feed that Wendy broke the news on. I paid my respects there :death:

    Thanks for the info, Kevin & Shore. I worked a 13 hour work day today with limited internet access(my phone is very picky about what links it wants to open. It won't even open facebook most of the time, though, for some reason, this site will work?) & it sucks being in the dark about things like this.

    Unfortunately, soon after find out the original report was false, I guess he passed. This is a sad day for not just the metal genre, but for music, period. The loss of such a talented musician is tragic, heartbreaking, & I know I'll be feeling it for a while.

    To RJD; A man who's music I was raised on & influenced all of us. You'll be sorely missed.

    Man, this is just too much. I had a friend text me at work in the early afternoon to tell me this and I thought he was fuckin' with me. It wasn't until I went online and checked for myself that I found it was horribly true :cry:

    I have to admit, the whole thing brought a tear to my eye, and more tears to my girlfriends eyes when I told her later. This truly is terrible. I had thought his bout with cancer was going well based on all his own updates, but it seems to have gotten the best of him after all. I was fortunate enough in my life to have met the man twice, the 2nd time with my girlfriend who was very excited to meet him for the first time (I took a picture and they were the same height). Each time, he was always kind and pleasant, which is always a pleasure.

    I remember when Chuck Schuldiner died, and how much it affected me. There were of course other deaths in the time since then, which were also sad and sometimes shocking, but none of them were like this. This one I think I'll feel most of all.

    The man was a legend, no doubt. He impacted Heavy Metal in a way that few others did ( :headbanger: Metal Horns anyone?). He will be fondly remembered for years to come from the music he created, to the wisdom he imparted on us through his words and his songs.

    As I write these words and read them, it just makes me sad in a way that I perhaps cannot adequately describe, but I think you understand, so no explanation is needed.

    Though not the tallest of men, you truly were a giant among them. Rest In Peace Ronnie. We won't forget

    That is so ironic.
    This was also my second big concert, the Black and Blue tour. Unfortunately mine was the most infamously memorable shows.
    Oct. 9th 1980 Milwaukee..."The Infamous Riot Show" literally. Second song of Sabbath somebody threw a bottle and hit Geezer in head. They walked off. Then the riot started with 10,000 people. At 15 years old my only thought was to stay with my brother and friends so I could get back home (80 Miles away) as one of my older friends got arrested by riot police and spent the night in the slammer. So I only got to see 1 song with Dio in Sabbath that tour. The next tour Mob Rules I seen them in Green Bay. Hence I believe thats why they named the album after.I guess thats why they started banning bottles at shows because of idiots like that.
    At least you got to see him with Bill Ward on drums.
    RIP Ronnie, HE will be the most memorable singers of all time in Metal.
    I was hoping that Heaven and Hell was going to play on the cruise.

    Another little tidbit from KNAC that may interest some:

    Queensryche's Geoff Tate, Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Tesla's Jeff Keith and Twisted Sister's Jay Jay French are among the stars who paid tribute to Ronnie James Dio on a four-hour special edition of Eddie Trunk Live that aired yesterday on Sirius (channel 19) / XM Radio (channel 53).

    The entire program will be replayed on KNAC.COM on Saturday (5/22) at 7am and Monday (5/24) at 7am Pacific time.

    Aside from the outpouring of tribute posts from peers and fans worldwide, I found this to be an amazing testament to Dio's amazing career. I stared at this poll from another site (link is at bottom but beware, it's a Def Leppard article that's bringing up old shit you may not wanna subject yourself to) for about 10 minutes before deciding I just could NOT decide. The man just had that musical midas touch didn't he? In the end, I voted for an album I felt was incredibly groundbreaking in it's day but still felt like I was somehow doing an injustice to all the other classics in doing so. What a talent! Here's the poll:

    Following the sad news of Ronnie James Dio's passing, what album do you regard as his finest hour?

    * Dio - Holy Diver (1983)
    * Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer (1992)
    * Rainbow - Live In Munich 1977 (2006)
    * Dio - The Last In Line (1984)
    * Black Sabbath - Mob Rules (1981)
    * Rainbow - Rising (1976)
    * Heaven & Hell - The Devil You Know (2009)
    * Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell (1980)
    * Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow (1975)

    Yeah, those people are grade A first class nutjobs.

    Same people that protest at fallen soldiers funerals and blame it on the gays.

    I'm sure their god will be very happy to meet them at their demise, and give em what they deserve.
    Have a good time...all the time.

    I like it all. Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules and Dehumanizer, The Devil You Know, Live Evil and Heaven and Hell Live at Radio City Music Hall. Then I like the first 4 dio solo's plus a couple of solos from 99 and 2002.

    But I am simply astounded at the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) who are going to be picketing and most likely dying at RJD's public memorial.

    I cannot stand this group. I hope they all get cancer.

    This thread needs to merge with the other one in the general metal discussion forum.

    Thanks Allison!

    Ohhhh those craaaazy rednecks. What will the do next?

    As disrespectful as it is for them to do this, in all seriousness, though: Silly religions, with silly made up God, with silly made up rules, for silly people. Someone's going to be really disappointed when they kick the bucket & find their immortal soul doesn't end up sitting on some big, white, fluffy clouds & hanging out with Jesus. Let them invest all their time, energy, & money into protests like these. The joke, ultimately, is on them. :cool:
