    Holy shit... Jeff Hanneman died

    by DrinkMoxie » Thu May 02, 2013 3:22 pm

Just found out Jeff Hanneman died this morning... apparently liver failure... that spider bite was probably the root cause.
    He was only 49

Whoa we made threads at the same time. Looks like you beat mine by a minute. I'll delete mine.

    From Slayer's FB:
Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)

Wow. Not really sure what else to say. Sad day. I have been toning out slayer news lately after the Dave Lombardo drama so when i saw something on facebook I almost ignored it. Guess Hell Awaits and Reign in Blood are in order to be blasted tonight

I never have seen Slayer without Jeff Hanneman present (20+ shows). The closest I came to that was at the Indio Big 4 show. Jeff came out & performed the last 2 songs. I don't know if he performed with them after that point. RIP Jeff.

I have some many stories of good times with the music of slayer playing in the background, it has been like a soundtrack of my life. I can remember getting show no mercy for xmas when I was 13 1983, I put on my walkman and went for a ride on the snowmobile, for ever to be a( Slayer baby) slayer was always being played at the weekend bonfire parties , hell in school we used to greet each other with( Slayer in your butt don't let it bubble up your back) I have been in 3 car accidents with Slayer playing on the stereo(none that where my fault) hahah, I have played Slayer at wedding parties, funeral wakes I'm playing south of heaven right now at work for a special 2for$30 dance at the strip club........ :death: I was stopped in the Cleavland airport by the DEA because I looked nervous they said( I was smoking in a bar smoked a clove and headed for my plane .. then while walking down the hall I was tapped on my shoulder I turned around and there was a very large woman and a guy she was talking but I couldn't hear her because I had angel of death playing on my cd player(yes A cd player (1993) haha I took off the head phones and said what? she replied can you fucking hear me now(hahah) and many many more stories but that is enough for now... I very sad to hear this about Jeff ( I FEAR SLAYER IS NEAR IT'S END) please don't stop making music :shred:

Being old you get to reflect on the days past...
How many times have I awoken to the sweet sounds of Slayer in the morning? Let's just say a lot.... a whole a lot. No shot of caffeine can replace the Angel of Death!

Here is to you brother and we shall meet again.

    Sad day.

One of the best metal songwriters there is and ever was. He's written multiple songs and riffs that will live on forever. He made his mark. You could say a song like Angel of Death is the most universally loved song in thrash and the epitome of metal greatness. He was a reserved guy so he won't get the pub of a Dimebag which is also unfortunate. RIP.

Now that I have had time for the news to process

I was late to the Slayer epicness. My first exposure to Slayer was their God Hates Us All album. I had heard of slayer previously but never looked much into them. I was more into Metallica and rap at the time. I happened to notice this slayer album in HMV and I was intrigued by the album title more than anything so I figured why not and I picked it up. From that day forth all my Dr. Dre, and NWA albums got pitched. I was blown away by the entire album and I needed more. Went out the next day and got Hell Awaits, Reign in Blood, and Diabolus in Musica. From there grade 10 went from being this quiet introverted guy to full on metal freak. The fast paced songs with the full on abrasiveness of the lyrics really resonated with me. I loved how they had no filter. They were gonna say what they wanted and fuck you if you didn't like it. I loved it. Saw them live once and considering how the band doesn't move around much on stage the energy they give off is infectious. I remember staring at Jeff for the majority of the show watching his guitar playing and being blown away that people could do this night after night.

    He will be sorely missed

My first Slayer album was Divine Intervention in 1995-1996. It was such a drastic change from the Megadeth/Metallica stuff I was so very much into. Kind of lifechanging. I do consider Slayer the greatest metal band of all time. That run from Show No Mercy through Divine Intervention is unmatched by any band but Iron Maiden.

Newer releases like World Painted Blood are massively underrated by the metal community as well. If Psychopathy Red (a Hanneman track) was written in 1985 it would be a classic.

Not much of a fan of this band to be honest.Although i will say that Slayer would have been one of those gateway bands when i was a kid that got me into Heavy metal
Show No Mercy is about the only album of their's i'd listen to now.Despite my oppinions on the rest of their work this was a great album which wouldn't have been possible without Jeff,

I'm sickened by the amount of different RIP tshirts or merch that have already been created on put on ebay after his death.
I hope for long time Slayer fans on the upcoming tour that Kerry King will put the money issues aside and get Lombardo back in the band and give Jeff and Slayer a proper send off.

A couple of my fondest memories of the dozen or so times I saw Slayer include seeing them in 2002 on top of a parking garage in downtown Pontiac, Michigan and it was pouring fuckin' rain when Slayer hit the stage. I saw their bus way down below, and bellowed the call, "SSSSLLLLLAAAAYYYYYYEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!" and of course Jeff and Tom were the only ones who looked at the top of the garage to send their horns. I got kicked in the face probably 15 times at that show and loved every one of them at the time. My face was purple for about a month, and everyone that asked me what happened got the response of, "Fuckin' Slayer dude."  Now in my older years, I kinda think it was stupid.
And then there was the Harpo's show...
It hasn't really sunk in yet that one of my favorite bands lost their best writer. Unfortunately, I think Slayer should hang it up. One more world tour, no more albums, and call it a day. Don't tarnish the legacy, just let it be.

    R.I.P. Jeff. :shred:

The reason the WBC flourish is due to the reaction and rise that they get out of people, they continue their tiraid by slapping the public with lawsuits. For everything from verbal to physical assault.

    Back to topic and respect-

Over 30,000 Metalheads from all over the world attended the "Drink a Beer for the honor of Jeff Hanneman of Slayer" event page on Facebook. It was on May 4th Saturday. I went over to my friend Chris's house and we bbq'd hamburgers and listened to early slayer demos, rehearsal 1983 and then "Show No Mercy to Live Decade of Aggression". Was a fitting thing to do. Oh and we had Heneken and other craft beers to consume as we sat around a fire pit on the warm spring evening...

    What a loss.....

    RIP JH.

Slayer has just issued the following news:

"We've just learned that the official cause of Jeff's death was alcohol related cirrhosis. While he had his health struggles over the years, including the recent Necrotizing fasciitis infection that devastated his well-being, Jeff and those close to him were not aware of the true extent of his liver condition until the last days of his life. Contrary to some reports, Jeff was not on a transplant list at the time of his passing, or at any time prior to that. In fact, by all accounts, it appeared that he had been improving - he was excited and looking forward to working on a new record."

While the details are being worked out now, Slayer wants its fans to know that there will be a celebration of Jeff Hanneman's life sometime later this month, along with Jeff's family and friends, the public will be invited to attend. More information will be posted here soon.

Kerry King and Tom Araya are trying to deal with the loss of their brother by remembering some the good times they shared.

KERRY: "I had so many great times with Jeff...in the early days when we were out on the road, he and I were the night owls, we would stay up all night on the bus, just hanging out, talking, watching movies...World War II movies, horror movies, we watched "Full Metal Jacket" so many times, we could practically recite all of the dialogue."

TOM: "When we first formed Slayer, we used to rehearse all the time, religiously, 24/7. Jeff and I spent a lot of time hanging out together, he lived in my father's garage which was also our rehearsal space. When he got his own apartment, he had an 8-track and I would go there to record songs I'd written, not Slayer songs, other stuff I'd written. At a certain point, you still have the band but you start your own lives outside of the band, so that 24/7 falls to the side, you don't spend as much time together as you once did. I miss those early days."

KERRY: "He was a gigantic World War II buff, his father served in that war, so when Slayer played Russia for the first time - I think it was 1998 - Jeff and I went to one of Moscow's military museums. I'll never forget him walking around that place, looking at all of the tanks, weapons and other exhibits. He was like a kid on Christmas morning. But that was Jeff's thing, he knew so much about WW II history, he could have taught it in school."

TOM: "We were in New York recording South of Heaven. Jeff and I were at the hotel and we had to get to the studio - I think it was called Chung King, a real rundown place. So we left the hotel and decided to walk, but then it started raining. We walked maybe five blocks, and it was raining so hard, we were totally soaked, so we decided to get a cab. Here we are, two dudes with long hair and leather jackets, absolutely soaked, thumbing to the studio. No one would stop. We had to walk the entire way."

TOM: "Jeff was a lifeline of Slayer, he wrote so many of the songs that the band will always be known for. He had a good heart, he was a good guy."

Sorry if this offends the Slayer fans talking specifically about what Jeff died of and not about his music legacy....but when I read initially that he died of liver failure - I immediately assumed it was alcohol related - although upon reading about the condition - one can have liver failure from other causes apparently. I think it is (at least) slightly curious that Slayer released an official statement that said his death was alcohol related - because when you think about it - they really didn't have to say that. Designed to be a cautionary tale perhaps??

I bring this up because we all know that alcohol comes up a fair amount on these forums - almost always in some kind of joking, lighthearted way (one of my fave smileys for some reason is little guy ---> :trashdrink: ) .... but there have been exceptions including people talking about giving up drinking for this or that reason and so on.

So, here's a comment (question?) - I assume that someone who actually dies of liver failure must have been a huge drinker for many years - but I don't know - maybe it's one of those genetic predisposition things where someone else could drink the same amount till they're 80 and be alright. I dunno. Regardless - the guy was only 49 and it is a *coughs* sobering thought. And btw - hadn't posted on this thread before because I'm not any kind of huge Slayer fan (never even listened to them till about 5 years ago), but I did see them twice at Wacken and in Chicago and most definitely appreciate who & what they are & mean to music history.
