Reminds me of a comment on fb today - someone wondered how the hell they missed Candlemass at Wacken and I reminded him C was opposite Immortal and he's like oh, yeah - right! ;)

Thought I should start getting into an Agalloch mode since I'll see them on Sunday :D - so I'm on the first of 3 albums of theirs that I own - going in date order - oldest to newest - so first up is The Mantle. :D

Laura their first show was on pool deck at 8 ... Destruction played at 8:30 in the spectrum first day
second show was in spectrum at the same time as Amon last day at 12:30

Gee thanks Jim - you and Joey sure have been helpful in helping me reconstruct my cruise itinerary! :P  But seriously...now that I have the running order in hand...it's all coming back to me. ;) :P
I remember choosing to see Destruction that night at 8:30 pm over Nevermore because Destruction's next gig was at 3:13-4:00 am on Wednesday and at that point I didn't know if I was going to be able to make that one being so late and all - as it turned out I did see both Destruction gigs and loved them both! And then, I also remember thinking I might skip the second AA gig and see Nevermore then....but then Amon Amarth was SO great that first night, I had to see them a second time for the pool deck gig. :viking: Ha - decisions, decisions, decisions - it was a challenge at times deciding who to see! I bet other people here had that problem as well at times. ;) All in all, though, I'm pretty happy with the way it all worked out. I kinda wish the cruise could be one extra day with the same amount of gigs so there would be fewer overlaps.

Btw Jim - your mention of the song Cleveland Rocks made me think of The Drew Carey Show!

Melechesh is Awesome ( or for Anika: "THEY SUCK LIVE"). You missed them when they played Chicago (with Rotting Christ, Hate, Abigail Williams, and Lecherous Nocturne) because you were seeing Yes.
You could have also seen some shirtless, corpsepainted Polish dudes at the show (Hate). Meredith also has added Rotting Christ to her "good looking dudes" band list. You may have missed out on some fodder for the "For the Ladies" thread. ;)

^^^ oh, Bentz! (you know me pretty well by now!)

"shirtless corpsepainted Polish dudes"? :beerhorns: Damn! Instead I got to see 63-year-old (who looks more like 75) Yes bassist Chris Squire wearing tight black legging type pants  and 63-year-old guitarist Steve Howe looking more trollish than ever! :? But they are SUCH awesome musicians and I LOVE Yes music....so, I wouldn't have missed seeing them for the ump-teenth time for any other band. :beerwink:

    * google images "Hate" and "Rotting Christ." ;) :trashdrink:

Good luck with the run! Hey, I thought of you today because the latest news on the Hole in the Sky site is titled "In Doom We Trust" and is followed by the announcement of Saint Vitus and Devil. I know you've got Saint Vitus in your sig and have mentioned them - what are your fave albums of theirs? Also, Devil sounds interesting - described as "Norway's finest purveyors of True Heavy Doom Metal. Do you know of them?

    re run: Thanks! Went great!

re Doom additions: I've never heard of Devil so will be checking them out momentarily. Not much by Saint Vitus I DON'T like (as with most bands I tend to really like, I like it ALL lol) but I think Born To Late is a great starting place. Anything pre-C.O.D. (Children of Doom) is worth familiarizing yourself with as you won't likely hear much if anything from the '92 - 2002 era since Wino wasn't in the band for those efforts. Some great tunes on C.O.D. in my opinion but not the greatest production and don't really measure up to when Weinrich was fronting the band.

    Well, it makes sense though...

Even though Laura and I have VERY different tastes in music from about the 80's onward, especially in terms of our absolute faves, we're very similar in that I think we're both very open-minded music fans. Like Jake and others here, we tend to look for the good in everything we listen to and consciously focus on that as opposed to hating on bands or entire sub-genres and excluding stuff too readily.

And that's not a criticism against more discerning listeners either. I think it's great that many fans stay more 'true' to what they like, know what they don't like and don't bother with stuff that's not right in their musical wheelhouse too much. I've learned a lot from the Power and Death metal threads that I wouldn't have if not for the fans who are so dedicated to their knowledge in these areas.

I won't speak for Laura or anyone else but I guess you could criticize me as being a less discerning fan as I just don't pick songs apart and analyze them the way I once did. I've been too pleasantly surprised by far too many artists that, at one point, I never would've even bothered with but who've turned out to be some of my favourites of all time. And then there's those albums that just sound like crap at first listen but then grow on me over time and wind up residing in my 'classics' category. I guess the cost is listening to lots of crap from time to time and maybe being considered less than a 'true' fan but the payoff makes it all worthwhile.

...for about the tenth time today...strange since I've listened to the The Mantle more than a hundred times at least...and for some reason this last track really struck me today. Singer/songwriter John Haughm has got to be one of the most brooding and melancholy types I've ever come across in music - I like that deep emotion very much! Haven't read much about him or watched interviews with him - so don't know where it's all "coming from" - but I think the music / feeling is very amazing nonetheless.

Agalloch always puts me in this mood like I'd be lying on a meadow right next to a forest
(but I have to confess that I only know the Mantle)

The early '80's Cooper strikes again! :beerwink:
As a big fan of Alice Cooper, those "lost albums" of the early 80's are fun to go back to once in a while, but I prefer the stuff from the 70's and the "hair metal" stuff from the mid/late 80's over those albums. Gimme Constrictor with Kip Wringer (that's how it is on the booklet I have) on bass!

Did you give it a listen? What do you think? I've listened to it a bunch now, and my verdict is that I love it. I just put it on, actually, too! :D

    Figurine? Photo please?

My friend and ex-husband came over and interrupted my first full-thru listen. I told him to keep quiet and listen -- then started it from the beginning! He started to lose focus around the third song and I gave up trying to give it my undivided attention. Sheesh, not being totally excited about new Amon Amarth -- no wonder our marriage didn't stand the test of time!

My upstairs neighbors are hosting a Mexican-themed party tonight. I don't really know what they're planning for music, but given what was on for their last party I'm scared. It did occur to me to burn a CD with Mexican metal bands in hopes it would get some play-time, but I don't think they'd be too into it, so I'm going with Linda Ronstadt's "Canciones Por Mi Padre" albums, as I think they're terrific. I'm listening to them now trying to pick which songs to put on. You don't have to like what's she's done, necessarily, but no one can argue that Linda Ronstadt doesn't have an amazing voice.

That's a great one - especially the live performance in Live aus Berlin.

Made me want to listen to Ohne Dich by Rammstein
I'd link it but my mobile internet connection is for shit right now while I'm out and about.
    Anyway - great song!

right now, I'm getting into Dada, an album I really get to enjoy a lot
but Constrictor will always remain one of my favorite Cooper albums; don't make me rank'em, but it's definitely in my top5 (along with Killer, School's Out, Trash and Hey Stoopid)
    wishlist '20:
    Axxis - Blind Guardian - Circus Maximus - Doro - Edguy - Frozen Crown - Heavens Gate - Magnum - Opeth - Pretty Maids - Ravenous - Satan - Shadowpath - Silex - Skyclad - Steel Attack - Viathyn - Voyager - Wuthering Heights - 4th Dimension

^^^ Alice Cooper has a lot of great material but am I the only one who holds the Love It To Death album up there?

It may be just that The Ballad Of Dwight Fry is probably my favorite Cooper song.... just my ramblings...

You're certainly not the ONLY one as I'm a big fan of Is It My Body (performed a few times with a friend) and ya gotta love Black Juju and that great tribal drum feel. Was it the first album to include a song titled Hallowed Be Thy Name? I wonder. That said, Goes To Hell is still my all time fave and it rarely gets any love in any Alice conversations I hear/read.
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me
    :shred:Book 'em ANDO!! :headbanger:
