Sonata Arctica: The Collection

I saw SA open for Nightwish a couple of years ago, but never listened to them much. A friend of mine is a huge fan and loaned me all their cd's - actually liking them quite a bit! And I'm always a sucker for a great ballad like Tallulah on the album above

If you're talking about the chicago show, I was there too! Nightwish was horrible, at least I thought so. I can't even count how many times I've seen Sonata Arctica. Love 'em.

Yep, that's the one - good thing I posted my gig history on the gig history thread

- The Nightwish/SA show was September 6, 2008 at House of Blues. I actually enjoyed Nightwish quite a bit - it was the second time seeing them (first time that spring at Mokena's Pearl Room). Surprised you didn't like them - is it just them or that particular performance? Or Annette as the new singer? Maybe I'm one of the few people who likes Annette. Of course I love Tarja too and have seen her solo a few times - but have no real issue with Annette.

Anywaaaays...there are only a few shows/performances I've been to in recent years that really disappointed me. The most recent was H.I.M. last spring at House of Blues - I'm a big fan of H.I.M. and Ville Valo

and had never seen them before. Well, I don't know if it was just an off-night for Ville or if he's losing his voice (probably due to his chain smoking and alcoholism

) or what, but he could barely croak out any of the songs! So disappointing - I almost left before it was over.

Also, I had kinda dragged a friend to go with me and she agreed it sucked.

in my case, if a show was disappointing, most of the time it was because of the sound
I live 20min away from THE venue for metal concerts in Switzerland and I'm used to (almost) perfect sound
Sonata Arctica is one of the bands I've seen up to ten times and half of those times were 'somewhere else' and with horrible sound
imagine Sonata with only drums and vocals, argh...

Just stumbled on to a bunch of videos on youtube of people who combined the recordings of songs that both Matt Barlow and Tim Owens sang on and made them like duets. Pretty bad ass.

It's pretty cool, their voices actually work decently well together, maybe a duet album would be a good idea. Or if the last announcement is Yngwie Malmsteen than we might see them join forces on the boat. (not that I think Malmsteen would be a worthy final band, although I have always wanted to see him live). I only really started listening to Iced Earth like...yesterday, pretty stoked for them though!

I never liked Jon's riffing, and Jon isn't really a token of sympathy either - and no, the vocal-lines aren't my cup of tea, too
anyway, the melancholy stuff is quite good - and I might try to catch one or two songs on the cruise...

I've been listening to Demons & Wizards for a while, which led to me liking Iced Earth. I don't think they have enough songs that are rockers, it seems that they are all the dark progressive style power/thrash metal, while Demon's and Wizards has some songs that just positively rock like Blood On My Hands. To each their own though.

I cannot stand Annette. She was okay on the album, but egads she was the worst live singer I have ever seen. I saw them in Worcester, MA and her voice was cracking during every song. She definitely couldn't sing the Tarja material, but she couldn't even handle her own fucking songs. Ruined Nightwish for me. I love the Tarja years and I will never see them again until Annette is gone. I'd chalk it up to a bad night but I've never seen a live video of her sounding good.

What's the latest on Skolnick? Doesn't seem right for them to play the early albums in their entirety without him.
I was hoping to be super cool and wear my Exhibit A (the band that Skolnick had right after he left Testament) shirt from a show back in '94 when he was touring with Savatage.
