His book is basically a collection of his site entries, but there are a few new stories. It's pretty funny

    Quoting myself. Fuck yea.

just kidding, I'm not reading this book anymore. I seem to have finished it between when I posted that ^ and when I posted this. Easy, fun read.
I'm also reading "In Defense of Globalization" by Jagdish Bhagwati and I might pick up the first Game of Thrones book or maybe some Conan the Barbarian next.

The Path of Daggers by Robert Jordan. Figured it was time to take on this massive series now that the last book is in production. Really good series

yeah, finished the books part from the last one earlier this year, looking forward to the end.

yeah, final book will be so bittersweet... I've been reading these since 1990 when I was 11 or 12 and, frankly, that's a long time and a huge portion of my life!

I'm jumping through books right now - in my D&D group I play a Druid and get to make my own bible/religion so I'm just jumping around a few to see if there are any concepts that I can rip off (monkey see monkey do as other religions have). Was browsing through the Celestine Prophecy last night, forgot how good that book actually was.

Jeff and I went to a used bookstore last night and hot damn they had SO MANY sweet old fantasy/sci-fi novels. We sat in the store for a good long while, both staring at the wall of books and thinking "Every single one of these looks fucking badass." We walked away with 3 books each, like either of us need more books
Anyway, I finished reading Game of Thrones (pretty sweet) and now I'm on to Clash of Kings (also pretty sweet.) I can see why there was so much hype.

I am reading "A dance with dragons" part 2 at the moment. After I read "A feast for crows" years ago, I had decided I didn't want to read any other George R.R. Martin book, as he kills all the good characters  But then I got the last two very cheap and the tv-series are so good that I changed my mind. And so far no one's died yet :beerwink:

A relatively new book in our collection (where I work) and have been meaning to read it for a while. After recently seeing the movie Control about the life & death of Ian Curtis, I almost started on one of the six books we have on his band Joy Division...(who knew there were at least 6 unique books on JD? :P ), but wanted to get to this first.....

It was alright. Not the best book, but not a waste of time either. Not sure what to read next. I have a couple of huge boxes of books in my car that I need to crack into, but damn it's going to suck going through them because they're so big and my car is a f***ing mess. :|

I'm stuck in a sort of limbo, where books about the real world bore me, and yet it feels like most fantasy has become too formulaic. Anyone know a book that presents something deep and original in an alternate universe? (still waiting for George Martin's next book to come out)

I just finished it. It was alright. very formulaic and the writing seemed to skim over important things too quickly, so it was hard to tell what was going on. But not bad for a $2 used book store random grab off the shelf

I like reading this guy's angry ranting blog posts so I'm curious to see how it stretches out into book form, or if this becomes a disjointed collection of said rants.

He's actually a pretty good sportswriter too.

I actually have three books going right now. The last one is for my summer class I am taking. It is the one I'm mainly reading until I'm done with the class. About halfway through it, but interesting stuff if you are into distributed networks and software.

    The Last Continent
had me dying laughing at times, he's a great humor type writer for sure

Thanks gnoff! The one I read was called Soul Music (I think)

My favorite are from George Martin, David Eddings, Robert Jordan, Raymond Feist, Ian Irvine.

I'm reading the Fires of Heaven. I'm hoping to finnish (the series) in time for the last one. Before that, I read "We regret to inform you that we will be killed with our families", a book on Rwandan Genocide. A great book.

I read Good Omens, by him and Neil Gaiman. It was like Monty Python meets the Bible (again! But, you know, the Apocalyptic bit, not the Gospels). It is quite funny.

I've only read the first third of this so far (the part on Lou Reed) - but, damn is it interesting! The description of what the art & music scene was like in 1960s New York City - especially the connection of Andy Warhol, The Factory, and Lou Reed is very   . I've been a long-time fan of Lou Reed (The Velvet Underground and other projects), a HUGE fan of David Bowie, and a so-so Iggy Pop fan. It's crazy to me that all of that is such ancient history now...yet it was/is so influential in the history of music nonetheless.

All of the talk on this thread about fiction books (sci-fi, fantasy, and so on) interests me because except for fiction that was required when I was in high school and college - I have read very little fiction in my life and know very little about it. I partly chalk this up to the fact that I have worked most of my adult life in an all non-fiction department of a major library. Every day at work I come upon so many books & magazines that are just so interesting & amazing to me. I honestly feel that if I lived 1,000 years, I would still never get to all of what I want to read - non-fiction-wise - that is - what I *want* to learn about. I do a lot of speed reading/skimming of what I find the most interesting from day to day - but I know I'll never scratch the surface. :( This is somewhat of a constant frustration to me...but lately I've been dealing with that frustration by trying to focus more narrowly on topics one at a time, give whatever it is "my all" at the moment and then move to the next one. My parents do something similar - my dad (who has been retired for 20 years) calls them his (learning) "projects." Lately, I've been realizing how much of a clone I am of him in so many ways (and to a slightly lesser extent my mom, who was also a librarian - ha ha).

I've been puttering my way though this piece of shit for like a year and it kills me that it's too awful to finish.
    Image
I hate leaving books unfinished, so I keep coming back to it. I usually like this kind of stuff but its just realllly dull.

I did a lot of reading this summer and I'm pretty proud of myself. Here's what I've read in just over two months:
A Game of Thrones - George RR Martin
A Clash of Kings - GRRM
A Storm of Swords - GRRM
A Feast for Crows - GRRm
    Count Brass - Michael Moorcock
Seafaring Lore & Legend - Peter D Jeans
In Defense of Globalization - Jagdish Bhagwati
I was Told There'd be Cake - Sloane Crosley
In Search of Schrodinger's Cat - John Gribbin
A Spell of Empire (The horns of Tartarus) - Michael Scott Roah & Allan Scott

Just finished reading A Clash of Kings a couple of nights ago, and have A Storm of Swords waiting for me to start it.
I enjoyed the former; A close friend of mine said he thought it was very dull, but I didn't think it was. I thought there was more action in it than A Game of Thrones.

Well Rhia, I'm flattered (but please don't be jealous!!), and having no children allows me to spend much of my monies on pleasure-related things (which I'm sure you're familiar with!). As for the food items I just listed, those are just commonly mentioned foodstuffs in the ASOIAF book series... can't say I've ever had lamprey pie or cooked lemon cakes, but several horns of ale sounds pretty damn good about now.

I threw A Storm of Swords against the wall thrice. Be warned, GRRM has no heart.

So, lots of fantasy readers, right? Guess it's not so surprising, in a metal forum.

BTW, jsut finished Across a Billion Years by Robert Silverberg. Wow. Classic, old school sci-fi. And very easy to read.

That's why issue with Frankenstein. It's not bad but I haven't been able to finish it, probably because I already know pretty much the whole story.
