About 100 pages in already. Book 3 was fucking incredible right through to the last page! I'm hoping this one isn't as boring as a lot of the readers say it is. So far it's not bad.

Jeez that took me a while. Just finished it and now moving on to:
    Image

Also as far as people saying that that book was boring compared to the previous ones; it was.

Done. Come on George get that fucking sixth book out!!!!

I'm moderately confident that it will be out this century   [/quote]

Yeah, however if it does come out around the end of it we will probably still miss it.

I finished Dance with Dragons recently and then jumped to Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Pirsig, great read! Now with a collection of short stories by Jack London.

Finished with the Mistborn trilogy. I can confidently say that Brandon Sanderson is my favorite fantasy author.

Now reading: The Emperor's Blades, by new writer Brian Staveley. So far, I'm liking it.

And Malazan is on the to-read list, though I have about one month and a half before grad school, so I'll probably interrupt the saga...

When he took over after Robert Jordan passed away he brought new life to the wheel of time series. Enough that I need to check out his stuff. Still have Song of Ice and Fire, and The Dark Tower series to read first

I say go for Mistborn first. Three short books, you'll be done within the month. Then you can plunge into the incredibly detailed world of GRRM's creation...

I haven't read Mistborn so I don't have a point of comparison, but Song of Ice and Fire will be a long read, also because you'll find yourself loving the point of view of some characters and hating others, so maybe one day you'll read 50 pages and then the next 50 will take you a week. So it's also good to have alternate reading material.

Just finished Toll the Hounds (Malazan book 8) yesterday.

First off, it was a 1300 page monstrosity in which countless characters all explore long and drawn-out philosophical tirades about the nature of the universe, their relationship with mortality, and the profound sorrow inherent in every personal relationship. That being said, it was brilliant and harrowing with a monster of an ending. Erikson has got to be the most ambitious fantasy writer out there. His series is over 11,000 pages and over 3.3 MILLION words. There are OVER SEVEN HUNDRED named characters.

Toll the Hounds was most definitely the beginning of the end, and for many storylines.... it was the end.

    Welp.

Off to read Dust of Dreams now, I guess.

To put things in perspective, I read the first book between October and December of last year but then was on book 4 by the time 70K happened. Since then I have slowed down (but the books have also gotten much, much bigger)

I'm doing two at once right now.

One is a book on the psychology of morality.
    Image
Really interesting, since it covers the things that drive us to moralize in the first place. Since I can be pretty judgmental of strangers, I'm hoping this book will turn my life around a bit.

The second is "The Witcher: The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski (good luck pronouncing that one), a fun romp through a bunch of amusing short stories about Geralt, the witcher. It has a good, offbeat sense of humor to it.

Last couple Wheel of Time books were great IMO, it made up for the plodding middle books.

I was just about to ask Jake what the names of those Malazan books were, they seemed to be highly recommended. I read The Strain yesterday, that was good. I started Name of the Wind this morning but I'm going camping this weekend and it'll have to wait a bit.

Great fucking book!! Just finished it last April and I was not disappointed. I think the last battle raged for 800 pages or so. Lots of death and desperation just like the series promised in its early days when it was darker and consistent. As Alex just said, those last three books with Sanderson on them really made up for the slower ones where almost nothing happened in 1,000 pages.

I am on book 7 right now...have loved every second of reading each book so far... I heard from this point for the next few are slow..but I'm sure I'll still love them..

on book 6, just loving it, i can barely put the book down
and i rather have some slower book but know what is going on than just rush from event to event and end up with books that barely make sense.

I've picked this up and read the first few chapters every couple of years for the past decade or so... today I brought it into work knowing it would be a slow day and started it yet again. Can't say exactly what it is that's prevented me from finishing it all these years, I guess it just isn't immediately gripping like the author's Necroscope series. I've never really gotten in deep enough to give it a fair chance, though. I'm determined to finish it this time.

Done with Elantris and The Emperor's Soul. Now reading Gardens of the Moon, following Jake's (constant) recommendations. I feel a little bit overwhelmed, to be honest.

Haha.. yeah I have been doing the recommendation thing a lot.

As I've said before as well, you're definitely gonna feel overwhelmed for a bit. It's a big world to be put into and a steep learning curve where you're in the dark for a while, and the first book is by far the shakiest (while the rest of the series is consistent in how awesome it is).

The goodreads scores are indicative of such, as the first book has a score of 3.8/5, and books 2-10 all fall within the range of 4.2-4.4/5.

    Good luck, dude!

I highly doubt I will get into Wheel of Time; my reasoning being that I despise when a series loses momentum, and that has been the most often repeated criticism I hear about it. (Another reason why I kept going with Malazan, because the series stays exciting and ridiculous all the way through)

I do have the way of kings sitting in my bookshelf, so perhaps I will give that a go! I have never read anything by Sanderson. How is mistborn?

Mistborn is awesome. I think Sanderson might be my favorite fantasy writer.

I think I'm ready to get started. I finished the third book in the Witcher series, only to find that the fourth hasn't been translated yet.

This book and the two following books 'Shield of thunder' and 'fall of kings' make a very awesome trilogy on the story of Troy.

I recommend these, and the author David Gemmell. Easy reading, not exactly genius from a literary point of view but holy shit the character building and brutal reality/fantasy mixing is awesome. This guy spins a good yarn. Also recommend his Drenai series and rigante series which I'm half way through.

I just finished The Brothers Karamazov recently. I found it enjoyable once I got used to the style.

I hear you about a series losing its momentum, but in all fairness Sanderson brought that series back on track to its roots, so it was well worth it for me to pick it up again. I actually recommend skipping book ten. A complete waste of time.

Finally finished A Memory of Light last night. I have to agree with you...could not have asked for a better ending. I hate to say this but Robert Jordan's death may have ended up being a good thing as far as Wheel of Time was concerned. Brandon Sanderson really brought new life to it with the last 3 books.

Thanks to viathyn's recommendation I am now starting on Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon.
