    Ice Fishing

    by Element0s » Fri Feb 11, 2011 6:57 pm

I'm going tomorrow morning, my first time. We cast off at the crack of dawn (so, like, 8 am). I bought some nice boots for the occasion.

Any advice? I'm even bringing gloves

I'm going with 3 other guys, one of whom is pretty experienced and will probably end up telling me what to do the whole time. Honestly, I'm just going so I can hang out in the shelter with a rod, drinking whiskey to keep warm

My Dad would always take me fishing as a kid in the Long Island sound and various other places. Only thing we seemed to catch was Flounder, which tasted like crap. Or if you fished near the docks we always seemed to get those poisonous dogfish things. Otherwise as a kid I found it too boring to sit and wait for something to happen.

What type of fish can you catch under ice? If it's good eating then sounds like it would be worth it.

I'm just picturing them sitting on an upside down paint bucket, drilling a circular hole in the ice and sitting there for hours.

I've never been but know ppl who have and have heard a fair bit about it.

    - Crack of dawn for Ice fishing is likely more like 5 a.m. but maybe your plans are more casual than that
    - Dress warm of course (I might even bring gloves lol)
    - Ice fishing is often a day-trip so no camping would be involved but for others I'm willing to bet it's part of longer trips where one would camp out or stay in a cabin or home nearby and go out each day or combine it with other activities like hunting, trapping or generally hanging out and enjoying the area
    - In parts of our country where ice fishing is very common, there are lakes that already have several 'huts' built right on the ice that are large enough to accommodate small groups of ppl and (depending on time of year and how frequently they're used) there may already be a hole in the centre of the 'room' that may just need a little bit of work to break through the surface ice and there may also be small bits of furniture to sit on or set stuff like drinks on
    - Not sure about any fishing 'strategies' one might employ in these situations. Obviously the act of casting one's line is pretty uneventful as it is just dropped down the whole but I'd be curious to hear what kind of bait you guys end up using
    - The type of catch being sought would be the same as what is caught in the particular lake at other times of year. Trout? Sturgeon? I've very little idea here but something one could google if we knew where Jeff was heading
    - As with other types of fishing, I'm guessing the old adage applies. It's really more about the fishing than the fish. Enjoy the whiskey and your friends. Willing to bet it's gonna be a blast. Bring back pics!

That gun is from Resistance: Fall of Man. I never played Mass Effect. Actually, I've fallen way too far behind on my video gaming.

I think the forum family is hellbent on derailing every single thread on this broad.

Ice Fishing is HUGE in Ontario. Thousands of little huts out on the lake--not my idea of fun..always some dumbass that gets his truck stuck in a crevice crack.

Been cold enough here that it should be thick... been above freezing for a couple days now!

No fish, turned out the lake we went to was all catch & release. Not a big deal anyways, the stuff we were catching were all tiny. We were pike-hunting but only the perch were biting. It was pretty cool though, drill a bunch of holes, sit in a dark tent, and the ice and water is luminescent and you can see right to the bottom. It's neat to actually see the fish swiming around down there and biting your hook. Wasn't even that cold!
