Would be surprised if Nashville can or wants to match. Would really suck for them to lose him and Suter but from what I'm reading they'd get four early round draft picks as compensation for Weber.

Not only the long contract, but it looks like they are trying to structure it so that Weber makes $26M the first year (max signing bonus day he signs and another a year later).

As a fan, I like the idea of long-term contracts, if I like the player; however, as a business person, and watching the full career of some amazing players, and some amazing players that have had their careers cut short for whatever reason, and on-and-on, I don't like the idea of being tied to player far beyond the normal superstar career spans. If I ran things, I would tend to do things in 4-year or less contracts. MAYBE in extreme circumstances, I might go 5- or 6-year for someone like the Stars did for Modano, which allowed them the flexibility to let him go to detroit when he wasn't the elite player he used to be.

It's just ridiculous! What a way to stick it to Nashville. $26M a year? That's just insane! I feel bad for the Preds possibly losing two of their really good guys in such bullshit ways.

Didn't Devils try to pull the same thing with Kovalchuk two years ago? If I remember correctly, they had to redo the contract because Kovalchuk would get most money in the first few years.

Yup. Wouldn't be surprised if the league took a look at it. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is some kind of protection from these types of contracts in the next CBA. Heavily front loaded contracts like that are cheap ways to gain a signing advantage over small market teams. I would hope the small market owners would be putting pressure on a change there.

I think they should. Who the hell ever came up with this front loading thing? And what w gamble, gee wiz! I think if I were a player having such a huge contract and expectations would make me crack

Even if they keep Shea, ownership's gonna have to give a ton of money towards it in the short term. Not good for that franchise. They don't have the pockets of Philly.

In other hockey news, purchased a 21 game pack for next seaso :deathhorns: . Would do season tickets but the games being two hours alway and my work schedule starting so early makes it pretty difficult to go to weekday games. Now we just need all of the ownership and captain bullshit figured out.

It's going to be so much fun! Yes, the sale needs to hurry up and Jamison better reassure Doan about the state of the deal before tomorrow is up.

For Preds fans (Shane): I read today that only one time in the last 15 years has a team failed to match an offer on a restricted free agent. Then again, is it worth it to keep him locked up to that contract or take the 4 1st rounders and hope to rebuild? I think they have their hands tied and need to match. Tough to lose the top 2 defensemen in one offseason and no guarantee those 4 1st rounders will pan out. They still have the option of trying to trade with the Flyers too. Now they can only trade Weber to them though. They may be able to drive up the trade price by telling Philly trade or we match the offer and you get nothing.

Coyotes have already sold 2500 more season tickets than last season. This is still with the ownership issue still unresolved and the team captain unsigned. Hopefully the sale is finalized and Doan is signed and even more people will buy. Plus, the Suns are gonna suck in the NBA so come watch the 'Yotes instead!

Dragic is coming back to Suns, he was mentored by Nash for a few years and had an awesome second half of last season with Rockets after Suns traded him away. Granted, he's no Nash, but if Kopitar's story showed anything, is that our country with 2 million people produces awesome sportsmen.

In an unrelated news, the last two 70k cruises I did we spent 1 week on Florida prior the cruise, which netted us exactly 0 home games by Panthers & Lightning. Seeing this season there is an off week before the departure due to an All-Star game, I will suggest to my traveling companions that we stay one week on Florida AFTER the cruise.

Panthers:
Friday, February 1st: home against Stars
Saturday, February 2nd: home against Jets
Tuesday, February 5th: home against Capitals

Lightning:
Saturday, February 2nd: home against Stars

Was hoping for Kings (go Kopitar!!!) or Canucks (just to boo at them) but we can't have it all, now can we?

Just a clarification. It's not $26M per year. It's not baseball. It's $26M the first calendar year because of 2 $12M signing bonuses, then the rest of the contract at $2M per year.

How would the signing bonus affect a team that traded for him? Wouldn't the team only be responsible for his $2M salary, while the team that signed him would still be taking his signing bonus cap hit?

So Poile basically has no choice but to sign Weber as the highest draft slot Philly has had in the last 4 years was 20, so those draft picks just don't match up. He's always said the ownership is committed to matching any offer, which they will because they are well under the cap floor already and have decided to open the wallet to sustain a competitive team.
I'm pretty confident Poile can come up with the goods. Apart from the hiccup in 2007 which sent Hartnell and Timonen to Philly he's been able to pull together competitive teams with little or no money. Now he's been giving a lot more to work with I'm thinking this will work out in the end (fingers crossed lol).
Life would be tragic if it weren't funny.

I believe the cap hit is calculated for the entire total value of the contract, bonuses included. If the player is traded, the new team assumes his entire cap hit and the old team is free from it. The new team would also be responsible of paying whatever money is left over to pay for the life of the contract, which could possibly be remaining blocks of signing bonuses if it is stretched out to multiple years. I think.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

I knew that the first year was $26M and then it would drop off, but I didn't realize it would drop off so drastically or that the main reason the first year was so high was because it was a signing bonus.

Shit... I fucked up my clarification. Why didn't Ryan correct me?

Okay... $12M signing bonus day of, $2M salary, $12M signing bonus July 1 (I think, or 1 minute past 1 calendar year). So $26M in one calendar year. But every single year after would be at $2M or league minimum, which ever is higher.

Swifty, And if the signing bonus follows a player after a trade, that is a HUGE reason to not trade for him until late in his career, when he might not even be there or valuable. So many players are projected to be the next Modano, Hull, Lemieux, Greztky, Crosby, Ovechkin... but as numerous as these names are, far more common are the Cheechoos.

 Adrian Gonzalez of the Red Sox (baseball) missed a few games because he bent over to say hi to a kid in a stroller.

NFL players do come back from torn ACLs. Patriots have two: Tom Brady and Wes Welker. Those guys turned out alright :headbanger: Hell, Tedy Bruschi came back from a stroke. Maybe it's just the New England handegg players that are tough. :P

I love how hockey players seem to come back from almost everything in the same game.

Quite a battle for last place the two teams have going on there :bitch:

Don't get me started on the Red Sox. The two guys dragging them down the most this season are the two guys who are supposed to be co-aces and the two main players in the whole "fractured clubhouse/chicken and beer" fiasco from last season. I'd love to see them come around but I think those two guys have worn out their welcome in Boston, especially Beckett. Lester at least has taken responsibility for his crap and genuinely seems to care but something just ain't right with him. Perhaps he just needs a change of scenery. I'd actually like the Red Sox to sell at the trade deadline for once instead of buy. The core as it exists won't win a championship because of the pitching staff (though I'd be thrilled if they do!). Send Beckett and Lester off for a top of the rotation guy and a good pitching prospect and keep developing the kids that have been the bright spot in this season.

Wow. If what I'm hearing is correct, the Ducks turned down Krejci, a 2013 first rounder and a prospect (presumably Knight or Spooner though I could see the Bruins offering Krug too) in a potential Bobby Ryan trade with Boston. Damn! They wanted Lucic but Boston says he's untouchable. I thought Anaheim wanted a second line center? Krejci can easily fill that role! Maybe the Ducks are just waiting to see what happens with Philly and Nashville in regards to Weber (Philly's been a team in the running for Ryan over the past couple of weeks) and if Rick Nash ever gets traded. Columbus has to drop their demands for that one though.

Nash must be thrilled to finally be out of Columbus. Going from a terrible team to a cup contender. Thought New York was going to have to give more for him, especially with what Howson was demanding but I think they got off pretty well there.

Glad that saga is finally over. Next up, Bobby Ryan (hopefully to the Bruins).
