I'm still catching up. I just finished the episode with Tyrion's trial. That moment was powerful. His rant really spoke to me, when he said, "I wish that I had been the monster you all think that I am." Considering all the righteous anger I experience in the city, I can certainly relate. I'll watch the trial by combat this weekend.

She has high hopes for Game of Thrones though - her daughter is named after one of the characters, after all :P

It sucks when you just finish reading the last book and can't find anything to hold you over until the next one come out, but I've been able to distract myself well enough at this point. Come join me in reading "The Witcher: The Last Wish". It's just as dark with a bit more racism and some offbeat humor to spice things up. Not as much main character killing though.

I know I say this a lot, but Malazan is super dark, violent as fuck, full of sex, has over 700 named characters, spans continents and races and languages, and the point of view changes constantly. Also, it's written much much much better than ASOIAF. So if you're feeling like there is a literary hole in your life after you finished ADWD, just go pick up the Malazan series, chew your way through the first book, and then hunker down for some serious crazy shit.

Thanks for posting this! I've just about finished re-reading the last two books in ASOIAF, have been putting off the last like 50 pages because I don't want to have nothing to read lol. I'll be checking this series out :P

The first book is kind of hard to get through... you get dropped into the middle of a story with no context and no explanations. All the things that happen seem random and disjointed until you grasp the method in which Erikson creates convergences of multiple story lines.

But then book 2 happens and you're exposed to an entire suite of new characters on a new continent and ride a roller coaster of unspeakable horrors...

Book three introduces you to soul-crushing emotion

Book four switches gears and shows insane character development

Book five introduces you to an entire new suite of characters...again... and with them comes some seriously hilarious shit for the first time in the series.

    Book six: back to horrifying.
    Book seven: Horrifying. Emotional. Hilarious.
    Book eight: Philosophical and climactic

Book nine and ten are one big storyline of insanity...

Wow. My mother is really taken with Game of Thrones. I got her into the show, but now she's a bigger fan than I've ever been. I've read all the books and just finished watching all the episodes. She's moved on to reading fan theories about the true identity of John Snow. I'm actually getting bored listening to her talk about it.

After taking a break from ASOIAF, I've picked up A Dance With Dragons once again and am now powering through it. I'm a little anxious to be "caught up" with the series, and I'll definitely be looking into some of the other series mentioned in this thread while I wait for book 6. The Malazan series especially sounds interesting.

I'm also open to other recommendations, especially anything that leans into the horror-fiction genre. I'm a huge fan of Brian Lumley's Necroscope series, for example.

Not sure if anyone already saw/heard this, but The Foreshadowing (doom/goth band from Italy) did a really nice cover of "The Rains of Castamere" from Game of Thrones! Check it out:
