I really need to do this for me and the cruise finally gave me something to help open my eyes to see the road I was headed down. I am moving better than I ever have in my life. I'm dropping gradually and hope to get to my goal weight soon. I lost a few more and finally broke into the 10 lb bracket of weight...didn't loose 10 yet but very close!!!

Patience and Consistency for the win hon!!

Unless you're in some kind of bet against others that's based on a goal with a deadline (like I was recently hehe), don't worry about getting there 'soon'. Just make a plan and stick to it. One of the many things I've learned over my (now 3rd time) 'successes' in this area is that it's about a lasting, lifestyle change and not about putting in a few months to lose some weight and then just coast. Coasting only goes in one direction - downhill  Keep up the great work and just do it in a way that you'll enjoy and be able to implement into your regular daily or weekly routine and the results are sure to follow!

I don't plan on coasting I want to keep at it :)

Oh no, sorry if it sounded as if I thought YOU were. That was meant to be about ME and my previous successes that ended up being shorter term than I would have liked. I was just springboarding off of your saying you wanted to get to your goal weight soon. Sometimes I think/type/talk too fast without fully examining how my words might imply something other than what I meant. My bad

no I didn't get that tone from your post..... I worry about that too though .... but I hope I won't let myself get too confident either. Once I get to where I am happy with my progress I will ease up just a tad but not much. I want to continue to maintain as well.

Haven't had sweet F.A. to add here since starting the day shift. Have hovered okay weight wise but some crappy eating and failing to do my indoor/weight workouts for about a week and half left me with little good to say other than I'd been maintaining my regular running schedule.

But, I got back to the weights the other day and found another gear in my running and just now beat my best 5K time by about a full TWO MINUTES!!!

My new time to beat is now 29:30 !!! It was actually 29:36 but I lost about a good 10 seconds waiting for traffic lights so I figured I'd split the difference and call it an even 29.5 ;)

I have to say I just love kicking my own ass on rainy days :headbanger:

Don't get discouraged if you don't always match or beat this time. You're body is going to just not be into some days and you'll run slower. At least that's what happens to me.

Awesome job! I've noticed that sometimes the first run after a lengthy wait give me the best results for some reason. Keep it up! :headbanger:

I have completely fallen off from the running trip. Didn't run at all while Marlo was in town (too busy with going to shows and Disneyland and the Red Sox game) and I caught a pretty nasty cold after she and Gnoff left so couldn't get any runs in then. I'll try to get one in this weekend and hopefully get back into a routine.

    Congratz!! Nice work :headbanger:

Reflecting on how my 5k runs affect me, I'm still quite convinced that 40K would kill me if I even made it close to the finish. Maybe after 6 months or a year of this I'll feel confident to start aiming for 10 or 20 K. Sure seems unrealistic atm though.

    Running in my GINCH!!

    by ShoreSlayer » Fri May 13, 2011 8:49 am

Very freaking stoked to announce that, just this morning, I've committed to running my first 10K in about 7 weeks!!

The VANCOUVER UNDERWEAR AFFAIR is a 10K run / 5K walk to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation and "Uncover The Cure".

Basically like any other similar event I guess except that participants run/walk in all kinds of crazy costumes essentially revolving around the idea of running in your underwear. Some apparently go in full lingerie and all kinds of crazy get-ups with boas and make up and such but I'll likely keep it pretty simple with a t-shirt and some KISS boxers or maybe my ACDC pajamas if the weather's less than ideal.

The minimum donation goal for all participants is $300.00 so I've already secured about half of that from some friends and family in the last 24 hours. I'll gladly accept any contributions from any generous metal heads here but feel free to direct any inspired funds towards a local charity of your preference instead. Honestly, this thing is gonna see me reach an awesome new running goal at the very least so it would be worth the $300 even if I had to cough it all up myself. But I'm sure I won't have any trouble raising the rest via other friends, colleague at work and maybe a little creative facebook whoring ;)

I'm off to FINALLY get a pedometer right now and will aim for 7K in this morning's run (with a decreased emphasis on time of course). Wish me luck!!

    Good luck dude!

That's a great thing to be working towards.

Yesterday did my standard walk to and from work - 6k
Did another quick round trip to a buddies house - 1k

Then, we biked down to the glenmore reservoir and went around it and back, 27k on bike.

All-in-all a pretty good day for cardio! ~34k

That's great, Rob! I always admire runners, 'cause I hate running haha

I faced the heat and went on my walk in actual daylight, did a little over an hour and according to my pedometer (which I still have my doubts.... it may count more steps than what was taken) did 5.53 km and 9085 steps :D.

    Holy shit that's funny Jake!

Thanks Kate and see my soon to be posted comment in the random bitching thread re: pedometers!

Just did 7.15K in 45:30 and felt like I could've gone another 15 min or so if I had to so the little bit of uncertainty I had about my chances of completing 10K without collapsing have been quelled!

Let me know what you think Kevin (or anyone else - btw alex_canada, still waiting for fitness answers from weeks ago dude ;)), but does it make sense to stick to 5K for my 2 of my 3 runs per week and then just gradually add to one longer one? Sort of like 7.15 this Fri, 8 next, then maybe a full 10 the next then back to 7 or 8 etc? I think I'd risk overdoing it and maybe skipping runs due to lack of time excuses etc if I were to try to get up to running 10K 3x/week. Thnx in advance

That that makes sense and could prevent you from mentally "burning out". I can't say I have any experience or read anything stating you should specifically do it this way, but that would make sense & don't see any harm at all in it. Doing 1 long run will keep your stamina up and/or maintained in general and will probably help your shorter runs and you'll see an increase in speed as well.

Warmest/sunniest day on record here in Vancouver. Great shift at work with lots of progress with 2 of our most challenging residents. HUGE Canuck game slated for 6 pm and my good buddy Mark coming over to enjoy the onslaught...

Felt great heading out and knew I could likely come close to the 29:36 I set a while ago but was hurting and cramping a little part way out so wasn't sure how I'd end up but got pretty close to home and saw I was just over 26 minutes so really turned it on and even came close to running over some elderly Asians as I came bombing around a corner

Man I'm loving this new hobby!!

    Thnx again Kevin!

    Thanks girls!!!

    And it gets better!

Had to pay my $25 registration fee for the upcoming 10K event this morning and wanted to do another long training run today with my mind on a goal of about 8K. Mapped out the route from home to the offices where the payment was to be made and it was roughly 6K so I figured I'd run there then a couple more K to Stanley Park then bus it home. But after I paid my fees I felt I had enough left in the tank to get home so I did the full circuit. 12K in just over 84 minutes!! Never ran that far in my life! Totally destroyed any fears I had about struggling with the 10K in early July. Certain my legs are gonna be in pain in the morning though haha

I'm not liking this knowing Rob is blowing me away now when I started the program almost 1 year before him.

If it wasn't for my knee injury a few months ago, I wouldn't be as bitter about the whole thing.

    Thanks Bell!

    Kevin... LMFAO @ the pic!!

I've said it before and can't say it enough. You inspired me at the perfect time bro.

Last year's Fitness Thread posts (Thanks Scott et al!), my brief conversation with Craig and Nilay onbroad last year, my weight loss challenge wager with my local buddies Mike & Mark, lots of encouraging PMs from the likes of Debb and others, your frequent raving about the effectiveness of the Couch to 5K program as well as answering all my many specific questions in the early weeks all combined to create a sort of perfect motivational storm for me. Very little hope in hell I could've accomplished so much so fast and with so much fun if not for all you guys!

I hope ya heal up soon and get back to where ya wanna be. I'd weep like a baby if something like an injury suddenly took this new hobby away from me. Hang in there and do what ya gotta do to recover and get back at it!

There's always those things in life where you realize, "hey if I never met this person I would have never been turned on to A, B or C" and that has a trickle down affect to a multitude of things in life.

To attempt cliff notes version, I started to have plantar fascitis before the cruise. Continued after but I was able to run through the pain/discomfort, but it got bad enough where if would hurt all throughout the day. Looking back, I'm thinking it was the lack of stretching and my abandonment of yoga during the holidays.

I slowly increased my distance and had run 5 miles a few times. Suddenly 2 months ago I would start to get left outside knee pain around mile 3-4, I would stop running and pain went away immediately and would be fine all day and the following days. This happened for about 4-5 consecutive runs, all around that 3-4 mile mark.

A few days after cleaning the garbage I wake up and my knee is killing my and I can barely walk. No problem when I was cleaning and no pain at all. Was basically limping around for 1-2 weeks. (sub consciously arched my foot towards the outside to prevent the pain in running on my arch, which put pressure on my knee)

Purchased a knee brace a few weeks ago, have been able to get back to running and ran 3.1 the other day back to my original pace (before I started my 4-5 mile runs). But even with that, both my lower legs feel alot more fatigued and strained than they ever have before. Makes me feel like an old man or something. Never had ANY knee/leg issues for the past year. So I'm taking 3-4 das rest between runs now.

I'm going back to yoga lately and trying to get back on the "eating right wagon", which was tough when you have a "bad wheel". I was able to kinda maintain my weight post cruise even without eating all that well due to the running. But once that hit the wall, I'm guessing I put on a few pounds and that might be messing with my joints having to carry more weight. So I'm taking chrondroitin/glucosimine as a preventative measure now.

Plantar fascitis is still an issue but has calmed down decent enough that it feels like there's been some progress.

Zebra print Thai shorts ordered. Next up are a pair of Superman shorts, although I'd never wear them in a fight incase I lost, hahaha

Hoping to get some quality shin pads on the go soon and a sturdy gumshield so I can get some proper sparring done.

Then see about upping my training and taking a wee fight. Would cut a fair amount of weight though, currently well over the 200lbs mark, don't fancy some big beast trimming DOWN to that weight and destroying me!

Hahaha, Muay Thai dude, or Thai boxing. Been into it for a fair few years. Mostly as a hobby, but the more I train and the more I go to events, the more I get the bug to sample the competitive side for myself.

There is a good possibility your shoes may not be right for your running form. I used to have all kinds of leg and feet issues when I first started running. My advice is to find a specialty running store (if you have'nt already done so) most of the time these people know what they're doing and they'll have you run on a treadmill or run outside to see how you run and land on your feet and they'll fit you with a shoe that's made for your running form, or closest to it. Expect to spend around a hundred bucks but they're well worth it. I also developed plantar fascitis and I ended up going to a foot dr. and he fitted me with running orthotics and within 2 weeks the pain was gone and has'nt been back since. I never run without em.
I can almost guarentee your knee pain is caused by your shoes. But don't take my word for it, find a good running store.

The odd thing was I was running for 6-7 months before I had ANY issue. And I did the wet foot test, to make sure I got the right type of shoe (pronate, etc, etc.)

But I could be in the market for new shoes, so I might go to a running store this time to get "professionally fitted"
