 I just had the most bizarre thing happen! All of a sudden lIke a thunderbolt - the phrase "ABS OF STEEL" popped in my head! Well, as I've mentioned a few times on this thread, I've NEVER been a "working out/running/fitness" type, but now I think I want ABS OF STEEL! I've certainly never had them :P - so why not? Sounds like a goal - I'm goin' for it! Uh - how many days till the cruise?

Haven't posted/read this thread until today (was quite bored, didn't have to work today) and getting disgusted with myself.

I weigh about 140 pounds right now, which is about 10 pounds heavier than I was when I was in peak shape/running collegiate track and field, which definitely doesn't SOUND big (I'm about 5'7"/5'8") but my body is just oddly proportioned right now. Can start to see fat gathering around my neck/chin area and have an awesome beer gut developing and I hate that. If I was a girl, I'd totally go anorexic but since I'm a guy I really don't "care" that much.

It sucks because I was never really able to put on weight when I wanted to and when your metabolism slows down, it really, really sucks (take note kiddies!). Hopefully I can do enough lifting to look better by cruise time, but if not -- meh! I'm not there to look good

Lots of stretching before and after workouts, drink lots of water and, if those aren't enough, Kevin recommended something to me I wish I'd bought when he first mentioned it cuz they're cheap and kick as on that acid left behind in our muscles after workouts...

Foam Roller

There's lots of cool looking ones at that link. I may have to upgrade. But the one I've been using is just a 2 foot long cylinder like the pic below

Skins are also said to be quite good! I have a pair and I LOVE them! Plus it doesn't even feel like you're wearing anything! I am going to be using them for derby when I eventually get back to skating. They do however cost quite a bit of money, but are totally worth it.

Thanks Rob! Now let's see if I can really do it. ;) Here's the deal - haha - I think I must have been having a "middle-aged" moment   (perhaps you have those from time to time? ;) ) this afternoon when I made that ABS OF STEEL post...however - I do have a pretty great track record of achieving goals once I set them - so we'll see. :P I worked at the library late shift again tonight (1-9), so I ended up checking out a couple of books:
Image

and then I saw this one and it was quite inviting   (especially the fact that the guy wrote a book including the words Hollywood Body - hello?)
Image

I'm not uber concerned about my weight (and luckily I've had the kind of body type/metabolism/relationship with food that has been positive toward that end) - it's more the whole gettin' older/staying in shape/tone kinda thing. And it's not entirely a vanity thing  (although that is certainly part of it - ;) ) - for example, I know I've read in several different places that it is not a good thing to keep excess weight around your gut - can't remember all the reasons atm....but, it seems to be a common consensus health wise.

You're 10 pounds heavier at 140 pounds? Ha - that's my goal weight at the moment (currently I'm 147 lbs and 5'9") But I can see if you were an athlete and in tip-top shape. ;) It is peculiar how just 10 pounds can sometimes change the look of a person quite a bit....also, I agree with your metabolism comment for most people/for the most part - I have to say though - I don't eat a whole lot differently now compared to my high school/college years and I've just kinda maintained a weight for a long time of 10-15 pounds more than what I was 30 years ago. And I'm like, hey - I can deal with that.

Uhhh....we'll see! Walking is wonderful btw - about the only exercise I do when I walk to work on occasion which is 4 miles.

Yeah, I bought the socks as part of my attempts at therapy on my calf before giving up on self-treatment and going to physio (which worked thankfully). But now I try to remember to wear them after a run cuz they're supposed to help with that like you say. They feel so damn good too lol. Like a big ol' heavy metal hug for my calves, ankles n' feet after a run.

Despite hating it, Kate's running cuz she knows I'll be dragging her out to marathons with me in 5 or 6 years anyways and figures, "Why fight it? He talks me into everything eventually" :P

Basically you have a bar with weights that you do moves with in loads or repetitions, you get rather tired after some 60 minutes :)

Friday will be a basic spinning class.

Than Saturday Gothenburg deathfest, with beers and cigarettes, yay!

 well, at least you even out the partying a bit with the exercise. (I'd lose the cigarettes though!! - thank goodness that's a habit I never got into)

Just back from the calf strain and I gave myself a severe ankle sprain on the same leg last night by running down a 2 step flight of stairs that turned out to have 3 steps :?

No running for 4-6 weeks. Off work til Tuesday then back on "Light Duties (seated tasks only)" indefinitely. Could've been worse and there's many bigger problems in life to whine about this too much but still... Fuck!

My friends band had a song last night called "It could always be worse" and the chorus was like "you could get stepped on by a Rhino, locked in a bathroom for days. Go to the Bahamas and contract an infectious disease. Be used for government tests." It was pretty awesome.

Nice!

Happy to report that less than 48 hours after the injury I'm already able to put my full weight on it and hobble around on it a bit without crutches (although I probably shouldn't so much lol). I think all the icing, elevation and constant tensor bandage really helped. Hoping for a quick heal, recovery and return to running.

I won't post the pic in case some are grossed out by such things but here's a link to a shot of the freaky bruise that resulted from the sprain if anyone's curious Ewww!! But too bad really

Rob did you get x-rays of your ankle? I can tell you from my job that 90% of people that I examine just have simple ankle sprains, but when you have lateral bruising like that we get really suspicious for a fracture. Best case scenario you just have a ligamentous tear, but you should have an xray taken to make sure you don't have a lateral malleolus fracture. You're doing the right thing by RICE-ing it though! (rest, ice, compression, and elevation :ugeek: ) Hope it heals soon!

Thanks! Yeah, got it x-rayed the next morning and all were negative. They zapped it from about 6 different angles so I'm pretty confident they didn't miss anything. Sure hurts a lot more this morning than last night but I think that's just the initial rush of bloodflow as I just started hobbling around. Guessing tonight will be an improvement on last night.

need a brutal workout but don't have much time? Tony Horton (p90x) developed this 10 minute workout that's really tough.

Since spraining my ankle 2 weeks ago, I haven't done a single crunch or any other exercises I could've been doing for most of that time that don't require the use of my ankle and it's more than healed up enough now to lift weights n' do squats etc

Tell ya what Rhia, you workout tomorrow and I will too. Deal?

Seeing this thread makes me realize I promised to answer a question in it several months ago! I'll get on that after dodgeball tonight.

I've decided to try and make the cruise time my fitness peak for the year. Time to get cracking, even though I'm sure it will make no difference.
