    The last song you learned...

    by Bell » Tue Mar 15, 2011 10:55 pm

So, for all the musicians out there... what's the last song you learned?

For me, it was In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth on guitar. Took me a good few hours a day for three whole days. Nightmare. Worth it though, great song!

Before getting back to working on original stuff, the first thing I worked on after the cruise was a couple classic Scorps/Uli tunes

    The Sails Of Charon

Love this song so much. Many of the leads are beyond my current ability level but I worked on them all anyways and saw some cool progress

    Top Of The Bill

Very simple rhythm but just a great tune. Figured out about half the lead licks but there's a LOT of tremolo dives n' swoops n' such that just aren't my forte at all. God Uli's tone is just out of this world on that album (In Trance)
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me

I also tried learning sails of Charon. Theres one up and down part that I couldn't quite get but I should keep practicing. I also learned most of Empty Hollow by Rage and Jake taught me a bit of Sirenum Scopuli. Been playing a lot lately, but my amp is pretty much broken with volume troubles. I also had the idea to take The Hell Song by Sum 41 (first song I ever learned on guitar) and play it in wholetone and tremolo pick it. BLACK METAL haha its funny, I might post it later.

Are you able to do that rippin' lead between 0:48 and 1:28? I figured out some of the easier little bits but most of it just leaves me
Whereabouts is the up n' down bit you mentioned? Is it a lead lick or part of the rhythm? I love how he works through a series of similar but ascending chord stylings in the rhythms such as starting at 0;22 up to where that lead starts. Such a killer tune!

It's pretty much just the part from 0:53 to 0:56 that I'm having a hard time with. Haven't delved much into the leads of the rest of the song but the verses are fun to play. Once I get some equipment that works I'm going to practice a lot more, hopefully I can figure that out. Have you ever tried learning anything by Symphony X? Thats one band that I can't even start to learn one of their songs because its all so rediculous. Inferno (Unleash The Fire) is a fun one to try out.
8th Commandment by Sonata Arctica and Ash by Luna Mortis I learned right before the cruise, thats a couple of fun tracks right there too. The solo right after the first chorus in 8th Commandment is just a little too fast for me. Jake, cover that song and play it at ur next show!

I used to be able to play "Sea of Lies" by Symphony X, but that was a while back.... and NO not the solos, just a good bit of the riffage.

We are actually (hopefully) doing our first cover ever at our next show... and it is a decidedly UN-metal song... made metal. Not Sonata though!

Last night I didn't feel like drinking so I left the party and spent a couple hours working through pretty much all of Relentless Retribution. No solos but other then that I think I know it all. There's no tabs online for that album at all so I was forced to use my ears  Anyone else learn any songs from that album? It's good fun.

Learned the song Motorhead, played in drop D tuning though so we didn't need to muck about between songs. Threw it into our set during the wee run of drop D songs, haha, chunky!

Giving this thread a wee bump after a productive day of learning!

Had a pure Sabbath mission, three songs learned in one day...

    Sweet Leaf
    Hole In The Sky
    Black Sabbath

What are all you other musicians learning these days?

    Indeed!

Learning to sing Hotel California while teaching it to one of the youth at work but really hating the sound of my voice during the chorus. Just a little off or something. Not sure how to fix that yet but doing my best not to let it interfere with having fun with it anyway.

    Working on:
Symphony X - Inferno (can play up to the second solo now)
Yngwie Malmsteen - Blue (turns out its really just a bunch of bluesy wanking which a sweep thrown in here and there, fun song!)
    Scorpions - Sails of Charon
Joe Satriani - Always With Me, Always With You (harder than it sounds)
    9 time cruiser

Awesome. I love Phantom of the Opera. My family got me the sheet music for the whole thing about a year ago. Send us a recording if you get the chance.

Esh, I think I been playing guitar too long to seek out tracks to learn though use to love jamming megadeth tracks as the guitar work was excellent. Mostly now I pick up and play my own tunes or just noodle around. Ah! I had fun learning some 1349 jams. Great for stamina building playing through a whole track.

Kinda tracks you can just bash the shit outta your guitar. feels good.

Their guitarist had a little "howto" here: http://www.guitarworld.com/1349_lesson

Any classical musicians out there? I'm learning Chopin's Fantasie Impromptu...and making very slow progress because my bass is more attractive than my piano lately

Other than that beastly piano work, I'm also tackling Regin Smidur (Tyr) and Portage to the Unknown (Turisas) on bass.

I learned the Minute Waltz by Chopin' around Christmas time last year. I've lost most of it though, I'd have the relearn it because I got caught up practising other stuff. I used to be all classical and sheet-reading but now all the piano music I play (aside from music I learn for work) is jazz/latin stuff.

I did sit down yesterday and learn "Tides of Time" by Epica, took my about an hour to get it all by ear. I'm not much of an Epica fan, but it's a pretty tune and fun to jam on the ivories.
