2013 IIHF World Junior Tournament from Ufa, Russia

    by ShoreSlayer » Sun Dec 16, 2012 11:04 pm

It's the most wonderful time (hockey-wise), of the year!!

Time to renew those great International and Continental rivalries folks!!

    Puck drops on Boxing Day!

Outside of Winter Olympic years, it's my favourite hockey of the year and with no NHL yet this season, I'm even more stoked this time around.

    Let the fun begin! (soon)

Canada!! The tourney was in Edmonton and calgary last year. I made it to a Switzerland vs Russia game. So glad I went it was a blast. Got to see Yakopov before the oilers picked him up in the first round. It's nice to watch these upcoming hockey players. In some ways I would prefer them in the Olympics over the NHL players

Yeah, they definitely tend to play with more heart throughout the tournament compared to the pros.
Truth be told thought, they simply lack the size and experience/skill required to compete with other country's top players.

For US viewers, all Team USA games will be streamed live on NHL.com. Other than that, a selection of games (including all Team USA ones) will be aired on NHL Network (which I don't get).

Keep in mind Bro, the rebroadcasts are always edited and shortened so they're more like an extended highlight reel as opposed to a real game.

Instead of watching those, I just PVR the first, early morning broadcast and watch it in its entirety (sans commercials and intermissions of course).

Good start for Canada. Still not sold on Subban for goal.

THe Spengler Cup should be actually worth watching as Captain Mullet (Ryan Smyth) is back!

Still a bunch of whiny bums though.

I want Subban to do well! He's a Bruins prospect :D

I have my doubts that I'll be able to watch the Spengler Cup here in the US. A few Bruins are playing so I'd love to catch some of the action.

Also my favourite hockey of the year! My razor's already been retired! Some men grow NHL Playoff beards, I grow a World Juniors lady-leg-beard.

I scolded the hubby today when he replied with "We let Germany score on us three times?!!?" when I let him know how the Canada-Germany game went. I told him he's everything that's wrong with the majority of Canadians' view of international hockey (around here it seems, at least), where if we don't win gold, we may as well have come in last.

Couldn't agree more. The insane sense of entitlement that so many seem to have is just mind-boggling. I think that people watching the games forget that these are just teenagers and that very few of those cut from the team don't walk away in absolute tears of disappointment. Yes, we have a great national hockey program and lots of talent to choose from but there's a reason they still play the games. Our pool this year is super freaking deep with both Russia and the U.S.A. icing teams that are just as capable of advancing as we are (Not taking anything away from Pool A with Sweden, Finland and the Czechs) . Goals come really quickly at this level sometimes so I wasn't even content at 6-3 vs. Germany cuz stranger things have happened lol. Rrrrreally looking forward to the U.S. game Sat night/Sun morning :headbanger:

Bahahaha! It all stems from a few years back when there was Pittsburgh vs Washington in the playoffs. The hubby decided that he wanted Pittsburgh to win the cup, so for playful domestic rivalry, I started pulling for Washington. He told me no way would they win, because he was growing a playoff beard. I jokingly told him, nope, cause I would grow one, too, to cancel his out. I made it to the day of game 7 of the series before I couldn't stand it anymore and shaved. The way Washington played that night can only be described as "shitting the bed." Hockey beards are now taken very seriously in our house

^^^This! One million times over, this! And the excuses people throw out, those irritate me more than anything. They're just kids, it seems cruel for people to try to make valid victories seem less important. I must remember to set my PVR to record the U.S. game! It came in quite handy the other night when a Canadian pre-tourney game and "Rush: Time Machine Tour" were both on tv at the same time, and every Canadian fibre in my body was torn on which to watch ;)

The Finnish team has really impressed me so far this year. The boys just seem to mesh together better than they have in previous years.

Hmmm... No comments from any American hockey fans. Does this mean they fell to the lowly Germans or that no one was even watching? :?

Firing up the PVR now to see what happened. Hoping for a good tilt :headbanger:

Slovaks have looked very good so far. They surprised me this morning :)

Drinking a beer and watching the US vs. Russia game now. I love this time of year!

I'm going to put on my "Caveman Hockey Goon" hat here for a minute.
I've played the game, and if you are going to get and take hits, don't be a p&*#Y.
The Slovaks have always been divers, fakers, embellishers, whiners. 2 Canadians have been suspended thus far for hits .

Yes, Lipon's elbow was high. Boones hit was a tad late(finishing the check) but Camaras was clean.
You have to know how to take a hit--be square to the checker and don't try to "lower" against the boards.
Don't turn your back when someone is coming in for a check--Euro players do this all the time--they more often tan not get the far worse of the hit.
Get up after being hit.The 2 Slovaks milked every opportunity they could to get a penalty. There was a vicious hit from behind in the Russia/USA game--the US player got up after, and there will probably be no suspension against the Russian player.

Players today are bigger, faster, stronger then ever. But, the equipment has changed a lot as well.. It's like armour--the elbow pads and shoulde pads are made out of PCV plastic and is like rock. Ours was padding and very thin plastic( back in my day!) So definately being hit in the face with an elbow hurts alot!

I enjoy this tournament a lot--the skill level is tremendous, the kids play so hard. Really looking forward to the US/Canada game!!!! Let's hope the refs keep the whistle in their pockets.

Skill-wise, they seem to be better than the last few years, but some things never change, I guess. There were a few shouts of "REALLY?!!!?" at the tv while watching that game. Speaking of notorious embellishers, I haven't had the chance to catch any Sweden games yet. Are they as dramatic as previous years?

I feel bad for Camara. I feel like if the kid's visor hadn't cut him and there wasn't any blood, he may have still received an unwarranted penalty but wouldn't have been thrown from the game.

To be fair, the Slovaks have improved immensely in the last few years. They do know how to get under our skin!

In general, they level of skill/play has become much more equal over say 1o years. I think a lot of it has to do with Europeans being allowed to play in North America in all levels of junior and scholastic hockey.

I'm not some "chest beating" We're Canada and we should win Gold every Year" guy. When we get beat, we get beat by a better team, not a better system.

Save the "We;re the Best " for Italy for soccer and the USA for Everything Else :P

While I love my dear sister to death, I wouldn't wish her on a fellow metalhead. She's basically the exact polar opposite of me

Should Canada win the juniors, I demand a belated celebratory beer with you on board, good sir!

I like him :) If the States didn't have such a great goalie, the Canuck boys would have steamrolled them on the scoreboard.
