Well this morning I received the bad news ... my brother passed away. Lovely way to start the day. working 10 hour shifts, none to little sleep and now BAM.

Even knowing he didn't have long doesn't make it any easier. at least now I know and he isn't suffering anymore.

It momentarily left me feeling dirty for listening to my own music. If anyone wants to challenge it and show me why the whole thing is bull crap, it would certainly be nice (and will probably leave me feeling a little stupid, but it's a small price to pay).

In my opinion, music should invoke imagery or emotion. That being said, there's music for every emotion. Sappy love songs, cute pop dance hits, etc, and metal. Usually metal (for me at least) invokes feelings of triumph, victory, rage, whatever, depending on the genre of course. Some people prefer music to invoke certain images/emotions over others. Some people can't stand happy, bouncy, folk metal for example. Others can't stand depressive black metal. This guy just can't stand metal in general.
Anyway, my basic response to this author is that music is an art form, metal included. And just like any art form, you can't prove that one art form is bad or worse than another art form. Art is about interpretation and it is completely subjective, therefore nothing can be proved or disproved about the usefulness or worthiness of any genre of art/music.
Don't feel stupid When someone attacks something that you think is really awesome, it's hard not to feel down about yourself and your tastes. But fuck 'em, we're all free to like whatever we want whether anyone else agrees or disagrees with us.

Does he have any credentials to qualify his opinions about music? All I read was an ignorant bigot blathering off at the mouth. I can probably name 10,000 bands he never heard (I'm 100% certain he's only heard the most popular of any genre a.k.a. the simplest, most accessible (hence crap) music available). Anybody with any musical knowledge that can't find a single metal band to b'impress them in someway is a fraud and has no musical knowledge. Remember, you don't have to like a musician to appreciate their talent.
I'm sure he hasn't written a single thing that isn't douchy.
Find 1 band he likes and then rest assured you'll know exactly what the deal is.

I certainly have no doubts about your comment up there. From reading other articles of his, I get the impression that all music sucks according to him. The main point being: The best music is whichever one you can overlook the flaws of. That's certainly how I see most political parties. Still, you're probably right. I think I just was just in a moment of weakness there. Thanks.

He doesn't need credentials. They're opinions on something that is entirely subjective in nature. Having some sort of credentials doens't disqualify him from being a bigot blathering off at the mouth, though it might disqualify him from being ignorant. Still makes him a douche.

It's a slow day at work. Here I go:

Same could be said about modern art. Most people think it's stupid. Doesn't mean that the minority that love it are wrong.

The metal genre is home to some technically talented musical virtuosos.

I have to laugh when I hear metalheads complain that some of the best pure musicians of our time are being ignored and neglected by the ivory-tower establishment just because they play in the metal genre. Here, it’s simple: imagine if William Butler Yeats only wrote poems about dogs eating peanut butter, and if he used only the same fifteen or twenty words in every single poem. People who espouse the shredding merits of metal guitarists and the double-bass technique of metal drummers crack me the fuck up. Maybe they also think books are better when they have lots of pages.

He's overlooking the lyrical aspect. Some metal has better poetic content than most actual poetry I've read. Look up some Solstice lyrics. Also, the "shredding merits of metal guitarists" could be the same merits of any great musician. Lots of notes played really fast in metal = lots of notes played really fast in classical music = lots of notes played really fast in jazz. Same difficulty, different styles.

I enjoy metal because of its dark, creepy, intense aesthetic.

You have a mental age of thirteen. If your brain doesn’t process metal aesthetics as purely comical, then you’re truly beyond intervention. If you have even the smallest scrap of respect for any aspect of metal music, lyrics, fashion, or album cover art, you are so aesthetically stunted that you might as well be a spotty junior high kid drawing barbarian dudes with battle axes and huge tits on your trapper keeper. If you love metal for its capacity to shock old people and oversensitive Christians, you’re an immature halfwit who thinks that offending people is the same as making a point.

I'm sure our resident forum librarian could help back up my point a little bit more, but in the distant past, there was a style of painting that became incredibly popular because of it's play on light and dark aspects. Renaissance era maybe? I wish I could remember more from my high school history class but I know that there are many great classical artists revered for their ability to create dark, creepy, intense paintings.
