My girlfriend did a half marathon in Volcano (a town called volcano, not actually IN a volcano). Went hiking through a lake of lava, kayaking, snorkeling, atving around Waipo valley... all that fun stuff.

I've tried it a few times. It's not easy, especially for someone my size, but whenever I show up early for something and there's nothing to do yet, I just take a nap in the car.

Don't the US have any kind of laws that restricts work schedules like that? That kind of behavior from the employers would make our authorities go berserk. It must suck to work under those conditions.

there are no such laws protecting workers. most of the laws are in place to protect businesses here.

I can't say that our country is the best all the time and we have odd laws too, but sometimes the US seem so 1920 still. I love the US though and have been there many times, but fortunately I almost only get to see the good parts.

In Canada to my knowledge there is only an 8 hour rest period required in a 24 hour period. The problem with this is it doesn't count commute time and it totally should. Still 10-2 6-10 is such a bullshit split shift. Split shifts in general are crap, I'm glad I've never had to work them.

What i didnt mention was that the split shift is across two jobs so its not just one guy in scheduling whos laughing maniacally at my schedule. The late job is supposed to schedule around the morning job and they just totally fucked up this week. Also it would be nice if there were laws protecting workers who dont want this type of scheule but ethen i think of one of my best friends whos working 14-16 hour days over 2-3 jpbs just to make rent.

Excellent! I used to get to school pretty early to ensure I got my favorite parking spot so I'd take a little nap before class. Unfortunately, a couple of times I didn't wake up in time for class

It's really unfortunate that the Americans portrayed in entertainment/the media aren't representative of the majority of the population AT ALL. Same with our government representatives. There's no MTV show about average people going to work 9-5 for their mediocre jobs and coming home to read or watch movies while staying out of other people's business and being generally tolerant/understanding of different types of lifestyles, and there certainly aren't news articles about them either, and those same people rarely end up in politics.

It's like being embarrassed by your parents when you're a teenager, only it's much harder to get away from our government/culture than it is from parents. I'm embarrassed to be a citizen of this country.
