Does your family share your taste in music?

Postby Laura » Sat Aug 21, 2010 9:14 am

I replied to something Element0s wrote on the Genres you want to see represented thread which was off-topic and I think better discussed here. I think it's an interesting subject, especially in light of the fact that new member PxDnNinja (welcome aboard btw!) mentioned that his step-dad sang in a rock band.

Element0s wrote:
My mom and the mother of one of my cabin-mates were considering getting their own cabin on this cruise, they are big fans of Epica, Ensiferum, Sonata Arctica, Angra, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Avantasia, Pathosray and many of those other power/prog styled bands. I doubt they'll go through with it, though.

I replied:
I think this shows a real generational change - when I was younger, I COULD NOT have imagined liking the same music as or going to a gig with my parents - they barely got into Elvis or the Beatles much less the Stones, Aerosmith, Nugent, Van Halen, Zeppelin, AC/DC, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Rush, and the like when I was growing up in the 70's. (they were always, and still are, primarily classical music and opera fanatics - at least I know where I get my passion for music from!) Anyway, I think a big part of the appeal of rock 'n roll for me and my friends back then was that it was SO different from what our parents listened to, the musicians were not that much older than we were, and it just seemed so down and dirty and rebellious - in other words - awesome!!

Having said all that, I think it's very cool that many of you share musical tastes with your folks. My two girls aren't even teenagers yet, so time will tell what ends up being their musical taste when they are older....for now, it's all the pop stuff on the radio - which is fine with me; I've even taken them to some pop shows. I don't try to push "my music" on them; for one, what little they know of it (I'm a closet metalhead at home ), they think is pretty weird (which I admit is true in some cases.)

Thoughts?

My mother is the one that got me into Metal and Rock (via Metallica, Iron Maiden, Skid Row, and the like ), but now days, while she loves that stuff, she isn't into what we will be experiencing on the cruise. I got to go to Metallica's Death Magnetic tour and she was jealous though, so that should give you an idea.

Some of my extended family listens to metal, but not the extreme shit that I listen to. I have a few cousins that listen to the "radio" metal, but no one in my family listens to Rotting Christ, Dying Fetus, AxCx, and stuff like that.
My dad listens to pretty much everything and is a fair White/Rob Zombie fan. A couple years ago I took him to Ozzy/Zombie in Phoenix and we had floor tickets. It was his first metal concert since Led Zeppelin/Aerosmith back in the 60's. He enjoyed it. My dad is pretty much the one that got me into metal when I was a kid, growing up on Metallica, G'n'R, Motley Crue, and so on...

oh....that is like the most awesome picture! have to correct you though - you wrote that Zep and Aerosmith are from the 60's - really more 70's - I heard the Immigrant Song in 1970 when I was a little kid at a summer carnival (by the rides) and I was hooked! Also, don't think Aerosmith was around/did much before the mid 70's.

You're probably right, he saw them in Flint, MI and he moved out of Flint in 1973 so yeah, it was probably early 70's. I wish I had the ticket stub to that show! :beerwink:

And thanks for the compliment on the pic! It was almost 3 years ago and I feel like I even look older now.

Haha, my mom was tried everything she could to get to go to the Metallica show I went to, and sadly has been to more metal and rock concerts that I have. Though my childhood consisted of video games and seeing my dad play rock in bars around the area, so even when I started on the heavier stuff than she cared for, she was all for it.

Hell, she bought me some of my best CD's as gifts lol. I told her about this cruise and the first thing she said was "So you already got your ticket, right?!" All I gotta do is find a cabin mate and I'll be ordering mine.

That is a definite NO on my part. I don't know anyone in my family that even remotely likes anything I like musically.

I'm quite sure that I'm not alone in that regard around here.

I think another interesting question to add to this would be: Does your significant other share your taste in music?

For me, that would be a definite YES (she is my cabin mate after all) :headbanger:

well to start it off... my mum listens to any old rock stuff... like janis jopling aerosmith... stones that kind of stuff... so rather naturally i rolled onto heavier stuff...

in the last years i have infected her with some more standard metal... like epica after forever ayreon avantasia nightwish that kind of stuff...

and the best part is... we go to a festival together yearly. The bospop festival:P which has an ultimate mix of old and newer music... for instance this year one of the festival headliner was europe (yeah i like them yeah:P) and my favourite band this year was the texas hippie coalition:P so that is perfectly arranged:P

next to that lucky spot. my gf is known to like also the softer stuff but sometimes she likes herself some songs i play:P so yeah that is also a rather nice click

the rest of my family hates what i listen to how i dress and all that shite... the worst times i had were around christmas... always the same questions:p why u wear black why u listen to that shite music... why dont you grow up...

really anoying:P

my stepdad likes some old rock bands but thats it.
Absolutely nobody else in my family listents to any form of metal or rock.
For a while my brother got into a few bands like Blind Guardian and Rhapsody because he used to be in my room playing my computer consoles when i'd be at work
and he'd put on whatever cd's i had lying out.
But yeah Irish people aren't in general metal or rock loving people so not a surprise i don't have family who listen to it.

When my husband and I met 26 years ago (we've been married for 20 ), we had almost the identical LP collection (the few exceptions being my Grateful Dead and Sex Pistols albums - he never liked either group)....all classic rock stuff which I think just about every suburban teenager/college student in the US listened to in the 70's/early 80's. We moved on to getting into 80's new wave, pop, techno, early rap, ska (New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, The Clash, Technotronic, Run DMC, Prince, Front 242, B-52's, Joy Division, English Beat, Faith No More to name a few.) In the 90's, our dance clubbing/ concert going kinda waned...but started listening to and liked the early grunge/ alt rock stuff... which then eventually segued somehow to new age/electronica/ambient music.

I only "discovered" metal about 5 years ago with Opeth and thought it was (and still is) some of the greatest music I've ever heard!!! Husband doesn't like any of it (the growls are the real deal-breaker!) But, I'm totally cool with that - I actually kinda like the fact that it's *my* thing. He's got his interests, I've got mine, and we've got a ton of shared interests (music and otherwise) - works for us anyway :P

Definitely fires up a shade or two o' jealousy for me...

As awesome as my Dad is, I'll never share a moment like THAT with him and I'd love to have had somethin' that sweet to add to the rest of the memories.

Mom listened to lots of tunes but no rock aside from Elvis and the Beatles (and certainly no metal), but my big sister planted the initial seeds of what has become my musical obsession with all things HEAVY by giving me an early Aerosmith album (Toys) as a birthday gift then playing Frampton and Zeppelin in her room... Her tastes have since mellowed and I have no real metal rapport in my family but sis still loves hearing about gigs I go to and bands I play in :headbanger:

As it should be. Most the best relationships I've seen or been involved in work like that. No shared interests would suck but too much and there's no breathing room or autonomy. Glad you found metal as your own :headbanger:

My mother is the one who put down the ground work for me to become a metal fan. She always was into whatever was "on the edge" for the given time, although she liked a wide variety of music and instilled that in me as well.

When I was younger, she'd go to shows with me all the time and is a huge fan of Megadeth and Danzig. Hell, she's met both Dave Mustaine and Glenn Danzig. Double hell, she was in the Danzig fan club for a while! Yes, my mother was an Angel of the Seventh Dawn! :headbanger: And she almost got into a fight in line for Clah of the Titans when a drunk Slayer fan yelled out "Hey, check out the old broad!" Her response? "Hey, are you a d***head all the time is it just something special you're doing for today?" Thankfully the dude blinked a couple of times and laughed it off with "cool ... you got me dude." (For a couple years afterward, we'd see him at other shows and he'd go "Hey, Metal Mom!")

Anyway, yeah, my mother likes almost all of this stuff and really loves a good bit of it. She's never flashed horns but she rocks.

Bummer. I'd figured that Thin Lizzy would have left some sort of musical lineage over around your parts.

I took my mum to see Edguy on their Canadian tour for her birthday, bot her a shirt and took her to meet the band and got them all to sign the shirt for her. That was pretty cool, she was pretty happy about that. She also came to Hammerfall in Edmontno as well, she's a huge fan of them. She managed to get herself to the front so she could rock out to "Hearts on Fire". Not bad for a 50-year-old lady!

I wouldn't be surprised if my mum decided to head to ProgPower USA in Atlanta one of these years... With or without me!

my parents and my sister don't share my taste for metal
my parents are more of classick rock,
and my sister is more into R&B and hip hop. so you can imagine the fights we had when i turned up liking metal.....

as mentioned in a different thread, i was not always the nice and cute huy i am now
seriously now: it was wendy who got the metal into my head.
as she is the one playing metal from the start and taking my to some concerts in Belgium (Gent) that was the turning point :headbanger:

Postby Ktulured55 » Mon Sep 06, 2010 6:23 am

My family does not at all really.. My parents are old enough that like like 50's music... Elvis and such, and of course modern light music, country, light rock... they are too old even to like things like Led Zeppelin or whatever. My sister acctually got me into Metallica though.. she was in high school.. I was in middle school and she liked all of the popular 90's stuff that was out so liked Metallica and the Black Album... this was my gateway band and album... from there I got all of the old Metallica records, got into the history a little, so got into Black Sabbath, then Megadeth and Pantera to now I like most forms of metal and tons of extreme stuff. My sister still really only likes Metallica and maybe some Lacuna Coil but that's about it.
I think some of them think I'm weird for liking the crazy shit I listen to, but my mom at least is a very open minded person and respects it and even likes recordings of things I've done with friends. I can play for her basic lighter stuff like certain Metallica songs or lots of Dream Theater. I haven't lived with any of my parents for years anyways as I am 29. Dad is here in Maryland, but my mom lives in Florida.

So, for now, I can say, no they do not. Although I do have a first cousin that likes a good bit of metal but nothing crazy or nearly as much as all I like.

Hopefully, one day I will have my own kids that I can "Metallize" and then my answer to this question can simply be, YES!!!! :D  :D

Hey....thanks to all who replied to this thread - fascinating in the variety of comments. Ktulured55, I got a kick out of your comment "Hopefully, one day I will have my own kids that I can "Metallize" and then my answer to this question can simply be, YES!!!!"

I mentioned earlier that I am a bit of a closet metalhead at home  About five years ago I saw Opeth for the first time, LOVED the gig, and soon after bought their live DVD Lamentations: Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire. I was so excited to play it when I got it back from the store, that I popped it in the DVD player in the family room right away. Well, daughter #2 (6 at the time), walks in the room a while later and says "Mom, who is thaaaat? He sounds like a GORILLA!!" A few years later around Halloween time, I was starting to get into Dimmu Borgir, and I thought, hey, the kids (daughters were about 8 1/2 and 10 at the time) love Halloween and costumes and all that stuff, so I'll show them some pictures of Shagrath and company on the Internet. Well, I'm afraid DB was/is just a bit TOOOO weird for them (and still are)  . And, I'll admit death metal growls a-la Opeth and the theatrics of a Dimmu IS weird to most people. And, in my case, my current love of both bands is due to a very long and circuitous path of musical taste which developed over more years than I'd care to admit to ;) .

So....I haven't tried to "Metallize" my kids per se (I want them to develop their own taste on their own in their own way as I did), although we do like a lot of the same music. In the car, we usually listen to the pop radio stations in Chicago. Having grown up on a lot of pop radio stuff, I'm not opposed to it, and actually enjoy a lot of it. I'll probably lose ALLL my metal-cred for admitting this, but I'm an Eminem fan and the daughters and I especially like his new song "Love the Way You Lie." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uelHwf8o7_U We also have enjoyed watching some of the DVD set I just bought of the 70's music show "The Midnight Special." When the soul and r & B acts come on (like the Spinners, James Brown, Ojays, Earth, Wind, and Fire), I tell them - hey, this was black music BEFORE rap and hip-hop! (hard for them to imagine there was a time before rap and hip-hop  )

One last thing...one day, I was thinking about how much I love the Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin and how that song TOTALLY blew me away when I heard it for the first time as a very young kid. So, I asked MY kids, do you know this song? and proceeded to do my best Robert Plant impression. The answer was priceless...."oh, yeah, that's from one of the Shrek movies!!" What goes around, comes around.

Hey! I'm seeing you guys at the Tribute to Alberta Metal Women show in Calgary on Oct.23! I have been listening to some of your stuff---- Really Like it.. I too was at HammerFall... great show!
oops .. off topic.
My dad likes classical--he has always liked acoustic stuff I was listeningto.
My mom thought Glenn Tipton and Angus Young were cute-:)

I'm going to shock my fellow metal heads here ... My folks from the deep under belly of Mississippi asked me today why I love , " That type of music ? " I told em , " Uncle Jed , that last gizzard is mine . I will let you have it, if you can explain why you are still seeing my mom . :deathmetal:

Absolutely nobody else in my family listents to any form of metal or rock.
For a while my brother got into a few bands like Blind Guardian and Rhapsody because he used to be in my room playing my computer consoles when i'd be at work
and he'd put on whatever cd's i had lying out.
But yeah Irish people aren't in general metal or rock loving people so not a surprise i don't have family who listen to it.

My brothers and sister like hard and classic rock but arent really into metal. My nephew used to be into rap but is strarting to get into some metal.

My parents(both long passed) werent into it at all but were really tolerant. My dad who was as straight as they came out of the blue brought me home The Beatles Yellow Submarine album which was my first album ever. I was something like 6 or 7 then, I still remember how excited i was when I got that.

there's just my brother - we started listening to metal the same time
he still listens to some stuff but he added a lot of other things to his album collection (nothing anybody nows of)

my parents don't listen to anything metal...at least no intentionally* ;)
they rarely LISTEN to music, mostly it's just in the background
but they do like some good music - I bought'em a few classics like Elvis, Beatles, Dire Straits, Simon&Garfunkel and the like
(Elvis and The Beatles were already known and liked "back in their days")
but there is to mention that my mam sometimes asked me about the music - when she liked something like TSO for example

they never really were fond of the metal shirts I was wearing EVERY DAY for quite some time - quote: "what do all the teachers think about that?"
but that didn't prevent them from supporting us...like driving us to Zurich for our first live concert (Running wild) - when they came back to the venue, my dad asked the doorman if he was allowed to ask the singer for how long they would keep on playing - the doorman wasn't amused

* sometimes a (no-brutal) metal CD was running in the living-room, and they most of the times wouldn't even notice it unless it's loud

and Laura:
np: Eminem/Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie

Lots of thread necros the last couple of days. Thats cool.

I have always been a black sheep in my family and extended family, not just musical tastes but attitude, even age. The only one in my family that listens to metal is my Uncle who lives way down in Salt Lake City. I like to hang out with him and talk about metal whenever he's in town or when I'm down there. It's a nice breath of fresh air. My dad listens to country and my sister listens to pop. When I was in elementary school I just listened to all the same crap my (older) sister did like Spice Girls. :? I've come a long way since then. :viking:

The closest person in my extended family to my age is my sister, who is 5 years older than me. She acts like shes 15 years older than me though, I never really looked up to her as a sister more like an aunt.

i am pretty damned lucky on this front. my mom likes death/black/doom/power/thrash metal just like me, but she doesn't get into the proggy weird fusion and instrumental stuff i do. still, cool. my mom goes to underground metal shows constantly, and wears a leather jacket with Venom, Manowar, and Skyclad pins on it. BADASS MOM for sure. plus, she doesn't look like an old sea-hag either. she is still cute! hence which brings me to my step dad - my mom is a major cougar, anyway he is much younger and really likes death and grindcore.

i wish my mom were coming! she has been to all the metalfests and MD deathfests and even the early michigan and tennessee deathfests with me! she is just too broke and has NO vacation time and i'm already paying for me and my husband for this i just couldn't make it happen for her too.

so when i go to visit my mom and her man in cleveland, there is always metal blasting out of their house. and they play rock band, too. they drink and thrash! it's nice to have that in my family.

my dad - not so much. though i do have one uncle who loves really old school punk and hard rock and some metal.

and my husband likes 99% of all the same music I like! we run the gamut of the metal spectrum and touch on some outliers too but we really have extremely close tastes, closer than any other human being i know!

even my family who doesn't like metal has all accepted my love for it and moved on and now just criticize me about other things LOL
