Now that it's booted Westvleteren 12 off the top of the list, it'll be that much harder (I prefer 8 anyway, that's what we have cellared). I haven't tasted it either. Maybe next spring we'll make a road trip to the brewery for release day.

Yeah, cellared 8 is loads better than 12, any day :cheers:

Still for price, availablity and price, I'd go for a Rochefort 10, or any of the numbers really, before the Westys :beerwink:

Just picked up a bottle of Russian River Consecration. Ale aged in American Oak Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Sounds interesting at the very least.

Mmmm. The Hard Liver festival list is up to 56 barleywines now! http://brouwerscafe.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-hardliver-list.html

One more week - I feel like I should be doing liver calisthenics or something.

My liver's definitely feeling abused now.

We didn't drink nearly as many different barleywines this year, partly because there were only four of us (and one was driving) instead of the usual crowd, and partly because there just weren't that many interesting things on the list. So after 23 of them, we really couldn't find anything else we wanted to try.

Our favorites of the list were Firestone Abacus, Hood Canal Breidablik, Avery Samael 08, Glacier Brew House Old Woody, Lost Abbey Angel's Share Brandy Barrel, Seven Seas Wheel Chair (though it tasted more like a Belgian than a barleywine), Sierra Nevada Black Barleywine, and Anacortes Old Sea Bass, which took first place. This was the first year there haven't been any bizarre flavors - we've tasted creamy tomato soup with fresh tomato vines, pancakes with syrup, and even cheese in previous years, but this year the closest we got to an unusual flavor was cocoa nibs. Everything stuck pretty close to classic barleywine style, with varying degrees of success.

Anyway, after all that, I need a nap and a few days of green salads. However, we're supposed to go to a chili cook-off put on by a local brewery tomorrow. At least the nap's doable. :cheers:

Downing a Deschutes Brewery Black Butte Porter before heading down to the beer bar tonight. I'd let you all know what I try but I plan on having enough to not remember. :lol:

The porter is pretty good but I'm not a big fan of the aftertaste. :givebeer:

Recently bought Big Eye IPA from a store in studio city where they almost never have it in stock, only to have a clumsy friend drop the bottle on the last block on the walk home. Luckily, the next day i went to a friends house in Venice and they had it there :beerwink: beer win.

Anyways, I'm going shopping today to look for that Jesterking Black Metal Imperial. Also keeping any eye for Maharaja Imperial IPA as suggested by Rhiawizzzzz. Anyother suggestions? i dont like smoked porters, but besides that I'm pretty open minded.

Yeah...
Mostly since I tend to keep a rather short leash (spelling?) on myself, so that I don't drink too much or at bad times.
Drinking when working the day after is always a bad idea, but I kinda figured I've had a very slow weekend (part from working with brewing and stuff), not doing much alcohol, also sleeping loads and well at that, so some early drinking Sunday could be OK as long as I make sure I don't keep doing it so I'll be beer tired tomorrow morning ;)

I drank so much on thursday and friday that i couldn't drink yesterday or today....yikes.

some of what i had included (most were colorado brews):

Boulevard Irish Ale (Kansas City)
Wynkoop Black Pilsner
Great Divide Hades
Allagash + New Belgium Vrienden (brewed with hibiscus and endive)
Dry Dock Doppelbach

the Vrienden was pretty weird, but in a good way. the hibiscus gave it a beautiful reddish tint and floral nose, and the endive made it a bit earthy, and just a little bit of sourness-might have needed a bit more.

yeah, it was fermented with Brett - but was barely noticeable. i think a little more forwardness from the Brett would have been welcome, and in this case with the other flavors going on i don't believe it would have been boring.

Could be interesting to try then :)

yeah, if they make any more i'll give it another go!

i'm drinking a mead right now - a mead aged over a year brewed with juniper berries. it's quite nice, but intense.
* 2 parts Orange Blossom honey, 1 part Desert Blossom honey
* Medium Dry
* Fermented with Juniper berries
* 12% alcohol
* Each bottle is dated (Very rare for a commercial mead!)

yeah, i was very bad last friday, and very very bad on Tuesday at the beer dinner i went to - had 8 beers on a week night. that wasn't smart, but it was fun, and i took a sick day, i don't normally do that, so i got over the guilt pretty quickly.

gonna definitely limit to 1-2 drinks on work nights now. yikes!

We've been welcoming the first signs of spring with Session Black Lager from Full Sail Brewery. Nice and light but still flavorful. We finally broke 15C last week, about a month behind schedule. Yay spring!

Ok, after a relaxing hour in the sauna (only around 80 Celsius this time) and a bottle of that chili beer I can say it was total crap. The beer itself was very light, pretty much like Bud Lite or something, and there was no chili at all. At least I didn't taste any. Makes me cautious of Lidl's "Habanero Ribs": the beer was rated 2/3 hot and if that was medium hot, well, their idea of 3/3 or extremely hot might not be what I think it is. Disappointed.

Saunas! :P Well, I must say, I've never known a single soul in my neck of the woods who had a sauna in their own home or apartment - closest I guess is in the townhouse development where my parents live there is a clubhouse with an indoor pool, outdoor pool, work-out facilities, party rooms, and yes! ..... a SAUNA!

There are nearly 3 million people in Chicago and approximately 9.6 million in the larger "metropolitan area". I have NO IDEA how many saunas there are - don't think any statisticians have bothered to keep tabs on the # of saunas here ;) :lol:
My hunch, however? ... there is a far less sauna to person ratio here compared to Finland. Just sayin'.... :beerwink:
And now back to the topic at hand.,,

Today we discovered a really remarkable beer!

My sweetie and his closest friend have a habit of buying the strangest ales they can find, to inflict on each other. It started out with just wild ales, but they're hard to come by here, so they started just getting unusual ones. Today's selection included a Brett that we hoped would have some serious wild ale flavor, but it didn't; a Japanese microbrew stout made with oysters, which had a slightly briny flavor; and a new local brewery's flagship product, a dark ale made with shiitake mushrooms.

The shiitake ale was remarkably good. We suddenly had half the party crowding around to get a taste of it, and most of them were rhapsodizing about what they would pair it with, or cook with it. The others were too busy scribbling down the information so they could remember what to buy. The umami-ness was really pretty spectacular!

I just enjoyed my first 6 pack of Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. It was very satisfying but I'm not sure it was worth the $13 I spent. A similar IPA would have cost several dollars less.
