I usually wouldn't pander to a discussion implying that atheists hold any privileged or morally superior position over believers, but what the hell.

I'm currently taking a philosophy class under the direction of a rabbi, and I'm on the verge of being booted from the course for constantly correcting his atrocious attempts to reciprocate what he believes about accepted scientific principles.
I'll set down a preamble with this disclaimer: I do not believe that I as an atheist hold any ground, be it morally or intellectually, over those who choose to believe.

That being said, I, as a hopeful student with the intention of a future in science, will not accept a verbal degradation of the scientific method or its discoveries based on mythical preconceptions. When my professor referred to Darwin's theory of evolution as "just a theory" I had to stop him mid sentence. Your referring to a scientific theory in such a way only makes it clear that you simply do not understand what a theory is. Science does not make claims of certainty. Ever. That is simply not the way it works, so I'll step in and defend the process, as it is too modest. The scientific method is the best and currently the ONLY means humanity has to determine reality (insofar as we perceive it). Evolution is a theory. As is gravity. As is the theory that states that our heart pumps blood throughout our body (cardiovascular theory) and the theory that sickness is caused by viral and bacterial infection rather than demons (germ theory, which, by the way, would have come about several hundred years sooner were it not for oppression of sciences enforced by Abrahamic religions... just saying). Theory is a way of saying that it is the best explanation of a particular phenomenon based on reasoned observation and evidence. It is called a theory simply because science is far too modest to proclaim certainty about anything.

So what am I bitching about? Allow me to summarize:

    1) I am not bothered by belief. Everybody, without exception, has the right to their own belief. You do not, however, have the right to your own facts.

    2) If you choose to believe that science is useless, just opinion, or otherwise invalid, Stop. Stop reading this from the computer developed by science, stop using the technology provided to you by those who follow the scientific method, and stop using modern medicine. You can still use "alternative" medicines if you like.(As I heard it put so aptly: Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proven to work? medicine) Or those bracelets that claim to help your balance/strength/agility.

    3) Do not, under any circumstances, attempt to impart your scientific ignorance on the minds of impressionable children or young adults, claiming it to be a rational way of thinking. That is absolutely and horrifically wrong.

    4) SCIENCE RULES! :headbanger:

I also appreciated cg's post. I never understood why it always had to be religion vs. science though, unless of course, like he was mentioning, a lot of people feel they have a right to their own "facts." And those "facts" are often only driven by emotion and opinions, not by anything they've personally checked out or researched (religiously or scientifically). I've heard just as many non-believers as believers parrot total crap that they've never thought out as fact and moral/intellectual high ground, but the people they like who agree with them them told them it was true and provided a "witty" half-baked, emotional analogy or anecdote and they stick by it to the end. It's frustrating no matter what group is doing it, it's often like the kid with fingers in his ears shouting "lalalala I can't hear you so you can't tell me I'm wrong!"

I also realize that science is researched by people with a limited knowledge of the universe, and scientists are human. We've been proving and disproving various things that were considered "settled" centuries ago, but really weren't, or were settled incorrectly. I also know that a lot of groups and governments spend a shit ton of money to fund "scientific research" that specifically only proves or disproves their "own facts" or the "own facts" of those they disagree with. So, I do keep that in mind. But I never understood all the frustration over scientific breakthroughs by people who have really only taken their personal beliefs as far as what someone else or their group told them they should believe. That's usually where you hit the snags, no matter what religious or non-religious affiliation you align with.

I was just curious if there are more, not why people are or are not.

    Quit trolling.

The same applies here as the thread about wanting more black metal on the cruise.

You'll all be too drunk to give two hoots about anything other than partying with each other, meetng knew people who love the same musi
you do, and gathering up stories to tell your friends back home.

It's like some people cant just see this as what it's meant to be. A relaxation vacation metalhead style.

Huh? Who's trolling on this thread today? Should be moved to Off Course but I don't understand your complaint here. Disaster Area posted a ridiculously funny story for us to all laugh at.

Nothing wrong with requesting something like black metal for the cruise. I agree that those who complain too much can get annoying and this will be another amazing trip as was last year but as paying customers, they reserve the right to speak out about what they would like for the event.

Nothing wrong with requesting something like black metal for the cruise. I agree that those who complain too much can get annoying and this will be another amazing trip as was last year but as paying customers, they reserve the right to speak out about what they would like for the event.

It was directed at the original post and the sillyness in the topic of this thread.
I only used the black metal thread as an example to make my point clear about this being an event for people to relax and not have to worry about anything but having fun.

It's a subtle way to start something that doesn't need to be started in a thread like this. If you're an elitist of some sort, stay off the boat.

There are going to be people who might be shy about going on a trip like this because there are so many different kinds of people, and making threads like this might just scare them off because we start coming off as elitists who only accept certain kinds of metal fans. I don't know if I can explain myself without making a huge post (which I don't want to), but it's one of those things you raise your eyebrow at and say "why would you even ask that?".

And i like that some people have turned this into an opportunity to show off their sense of humour, which only further proves my point about this being a silly topic and most of the people on this boat don't care what you believe in as long as you're having fun and not being a dbag to others.

This thread was dead "Jan 20, 2011". I blame Disaster Area for having a sense of humor and enjoying life  pasta strainer!!!!!

Max, I think you'd be hard pressed to find any elitists on the cruise. The first experience had taught us all that everyone is included in the mayhem. Didn't see any cases of people leaving others out regardless of beliefs or musical taste. Hell, using this topic as an example, this topic of conversation never even got on broad. I personally don't see any issue with some like minded people on an internet forum (where many of us now know each other beyond screen names and avatars) having a discussion about a common belief system that many may be passionate about.

Though this topic was initially ridiculous when it started, some of us forum members have gone on and made our own fun out of it. If somebody is uncomfortable with the topic, just don't read it.

In the end, open mindedness is certainly the key here and nobody related to the cruise that I've come into contact with has been anything but open minded and inclusive.

It was started by a troll, her last post was before the cruise. I don't come here much but I actually thought this thread was about trying to get Atheist on broad. I still think it was one of the members of Swashbuckle coming on here trolling everyone. They are pretty much the trolls of the metal world anyways (for anyone who follows their facebook). This should be their next album cover:
