Inspired by a guy in the "activities on board" thread that says he won't fit in - I'm sure we'll have a big mix of people on board in terms of occupations, interests and cities they live in. Let's post a quick tidbit here, it'll give us something more to talk about when we meet each other.

What first got you into metal?
I heard Metallica on the radio and liked it, but had no idea "metal" even existed. I was at home one night watching Muchmusic (our MTV) and they played a Maiden Video (wicker man) late at night once. I ran to a piece of paper and wrote down the band name when they showed it at the end. That gave me a starting point. I also played in a band with a few guys who got me more into metal pretty quick. As I said, it's just that I didn't know the stuff existed or else I would have loved it all along - the guitarist played the intro from BG's mirror mirror and I was hooked.

Play any instruments?
Drums, for around 10 years I guess. Not amazing at prog stuff or anything really off the beaten path, but I can sit down with Nightfall in Middle Earth and hammer it out hit for hit (+ Ensiferum, Iced Earth, Amon Amarth etc)

What do you do?
I'm working a fitness-related job at a high-end medical fitness facility (technically a gym, but nurses, physios and doctors are working alongside and we deliver integrated programs). I do things varying from personal training to bloodwork interpretation to delivering lectures regarding cardiac rehabilitation. If there is interest, I might put together a "be cruise ready" exercise plan 3 months before departure and post.

My sister who is 15 years older than me gave me her Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath album in 1971. I hid it under my bed from my parents. But that album probably did it for me. I liked music always and the harder the better. So it was Deep Purple, Scorpions, Judas Priest in the mid 70s. I heard Motorhead and Saxon the same year (1978). Venom in 1981 (Black Metal!), and well...you get the picture. I lived it all. the rising of death metal in 86-92 and then forward....

What first got you into metal?
My mom listened to stuff like motley crew, Guns & Roses, and Ratt while I was growing up. I thought it was all pretty cool so I started to listen to them too. However I kept wanting my music to get louder, heavier and faster. So I moved on to Metallica and megadeth. And Now I listen to death metal and black metal and haven't found a direction to go that's heavier. Though I am down for some metal from all the different genres depending on my mood.

I can play a little Bass, drums, and piano. I have a killer growl though, and was singing(growling) in a metal band for about a year before we broke up.

Well, I guess the super-early stages began with mom being into Heart and my aunt being into Def Leppard. But I really didn't start venturing into the metal realm until I was about 20. Alice Cooper was an early fave of mine. I love the album Killer and play it frequently to this day.

What first got you into metal?
I'd say that Van Halen was a first early step back in the early to mid 80's, which led to things like Motley Crue, AC/DC, Def Leppard and such. Then of course came Maiden and Priest and the like, next leading to Megadeth, Anthrax and similar such things (actually I got into those two before getting into Metallica). Honestly I started light and worked my way up the heaviness ladder. I was immersing myself quite a bit in the Thrash pool by the early 90's, so when Death Metal really started to emerge, I didn't quite get it at first. Then I listened to some Entombed and Morbid Angel, and that set me straight. I've been tried and true ever since.


Play any instruments?
I played some guitar when I was in High School, but it never really went anywhere. My real passion was for drums, but my father wouldn't let me get a set and so I never got to realize my potential with that, as I have a very good sense of rhythm. That just leaves me my voice, which served me well on the radio for 13 years and also in my present job. I have pondered the possibility of trying my hand as a vocalist, as I have a fairly broad vocal range, but that remains to be seen...

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like going to shows and hanging out with friends when I can. Sometimes me and my girlfriend will catch a movie when there's something to see. Most of the time, I don't even like going outside, as 2/3 of the year it's sweltering outside with 200% humidity. I would go swimming if I had a pool, so no dice there. I don't really have as many hobbies as I used to, like video games, comic books and a phase where I was collecting action figures (I have every Eddie made thus far). Just went to the yearly Dade County fair for my annual dose of whiplash and vomit inducing rides, which luckily didn't occur.

What first got you into metal?
I heard Metallica when i was 13, i was learning how to play guitar, then a friend showed me their sound and i just fell for it, 1st song i listened was Nothing Else Matters, then other songs from the same album and then other albums and finally started to listen to other bands such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and so on. After a while i got to a CD called A Tribute to The Four Horsemen and there where lots of bands playing metallica's songs, this was when i 1st listened to sonata arctica playing fade to black and i went for some other songs of them and other bands in this album and then i got to know lots of other bands and styles.

Hard to say. I remember listening to some in Middle school, like it, but never really bothered to pursue music at that point. When I was in high school I remember hanging out with some friends, while drinking beer and listening to metal. I think that's what it was.

What first got you into metal?
I started with Aerosmith, when I was in school, then I continued listening Metallica and Pantera. In high school I got into power and epic like Rhaphsody. And by the end of high school it became Amon Amarth, Immortal and theatres des vampires.

Not even guitar hero =S.

What first got you into metal?
Having studied in a Catholic elementary and high school, my environment was pretty much pop, but I always liked "darker" stuff. From what I can remember, I loved Evanescence and Good Charlotte Then, after high school I accidentally listened to a Within Temptation song, "Forsaken", and I loved it. After that, I listened pretty much everything (good) from WT. Then got into Nightwish (some high school friends who are headbangers helped me to educate myself with real metal), and then looked for myself Iron Maiden, Sonata Artica, Epica, Children of Bodom, Haggard, etc etc etc

Play any instruments?
Vocals. With my headbanger friends from high school we made a cover band. I was the female singer, and played some keyboards, but haven't really studied any of those =( I've received kudos for my pop voice, but I always try to vary that. My inspiration (and platonic love) is Simone Simons =D

Walk around the city, go to metal shows, watch TV, play video games (I LOVE GOD OF WAR!!!), go to the movies, go shopping (I'm such a girl), hang out with my boyfriend =), read books, write songs, sing and dance...

What first got you into metal?
Bands such as Evanescence and Linkin Park were my catalysts. I then came across Nightwish (with Tarja) by mistake one day and absolutely loved it. It was at that time I was attending TAFE and met guy and we dated for a while. He was very much into all types of metal and my love of metal started from there.

Play any instruments?
No, but I do sing. I eventually want to learn bass though.

I have "<3 P!nk" tattooed on my wrist as I got her to sign me during one of the 10 shows I went to when she was in Australia last year.. My friends and then traveled to the US to see her in both Philadelphia and New York, while also meeting her backstage at MSG due to my friend winning a meet and greet competition.

What first got you into metal?
Well, as most of you have already stated I started listening to metal when I heard Metallica on the radio. Although I was always into bands like Def Leppard and Twisted Sister as a child.

Play any instruments?
I started to learn drums when I was 6. My friend's dad was in a band, and used to teach me. Unfortunately I moved away, and have never had the opportunity to learn since then.

What first got you into metal?
Well, I remember that when I was around 5 I already went crazy for Aerosmith, Whitesnake and some other things my dad listens to. Then, when I was a silly Japanese aniation fan, I ended up bumping on this animation's opening recorded by Angra and started to listen to them. But when I actually got reeeally interested in heavy metal was when my cousin showed me "Speed of Light" by Stratovarius. But I still listen to plenty of other things that are not really 'Metal" tagged

Play any instruments?
My biggest passion is to sing, but I've been playing the drums for pretty long(even though I'm not THAT good), I can play a few things on the bass guitar, play some kaeyboards/piano and some other kinda random instruments.
