What first got you into metal?
When I was 8 years-old and like many other kids in my school: KISS Alive! (with a bit of late 70's Rush and Kansas thrown in the mix) then when I was 10 years-old Maiden played my hometown of Chicoutimi, Quebec for Piece of Mind back in '83 and they were obviously the talk of the town so that's when I became a fan then Sabbath with Dio (Mob Rules will always remain the best Sabbath for me) also back in 83. In 84, I heard Venom's Black Metal and Metallica's Ride the Lightning and my life was changed forever. Always loved all sub-genres of hard rock and metal so from Motley to Nile and everything in between! METAL!!

Been reading these forums for a while but not been able to get an e-mail to allow me to be authorized. My joy in life is traveling and meeting new people. I hate going places where I can't speak the language so I've tried to learn quite a few. I'm nearly fluent in French and can carry on a conversation in Italian. I'm currently working on Dutch. I'm convinced that I can learn any language except for Spanish. I've taken the intro course at the local university twice and had to drop out. It's just way to similar to Italian.

Only as an American. I think here most people learn Spanish, if anything extra. Everywhere else I've been people know two if not more fluently. I guess it's all the English T.V. most of you all watch. I'd assume computers might have something to do with it too. I've always been surprised when in Northern Europe, especially the Netherlands and Sweden, that people speak better English than where I live in the U.S.

For us in the Nordics there's an easy explanation: almost all foreign tv shows are subtitled, not dubbed in our own languages. And even though the Scandinavians understand each others to some extent (as do we with the Estonians), them and us are small nations who need to learn other languages in order to communicate and do trade with the rest of the world.

Oh, I recommend you try and learn Finnish. I can guarantee it's not too similar to any language you already speak.

Kiitos. I have a good friend from Finland and I'm pretty sure your long consonants would give me difficulty. My cousins in Denmark can understand Swedish and Norwegian easily but they can't understand him. I definitely got good at French watching subtitled films back in highschool
