Orphaned Land is one of my very favorite bands for many reasons. I discovered them relatively recently (a few years ago) when I saw them in the documentary Global Metal
. Around the same time I saw and read a new book where I work called Heavy Metal Islam: Rock, Resistance, and the Struggle for the Soul of Islam
by Mark LeVine - http://www.meaning.org/hmi_book.html
- that includes a discussion of the band. Author LeVine refers to them as the "most influential band in the Middle East." Some months later I found out they were going to be in Chicago in the spring of 2010 and at Wacken 2010!! (saw both gigs - great! - and met lead singer Kobi Farhi in Chicago) And to top all that
off - I discovered that their latest album (Never Ending Way of the ORWarriOR
) was produced by one of my musical heroes of all time - Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, etc.)! And Jake - that link you posted is awesome! Had not seen it before - and Wilson is in it!!!
I think they would be amazing on the cruise and very willing to talk/socialize with the fans - they have been very open about discussing the whole experience of creating music in the Middle East (not quite Scandinavia, now is it?
), e.g. the fact that they have Arab (Muslim)and
Israeli (Jewish) fans, etc. Well - and of course, their music is quite fantastic & unique imo - so they would make for a great addition to the 70K "mix"
There are some great interviews/videos on youtube...here are a few:
