    UMC Customer Feedback

    by mooyagi » Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:11 am

I want to start by once again thanking Andy and the entire UMC crew for their tireless work in putting on another trip for the ages. When talking to Blake and Allison, they were really interested in seeing what we liked and didn't like about the cruise. In the interest of continuously improving the 70000 Tons of Metal experience I figured this would be a good spot to provide direct feedback to UMC. I definitely noticed some changes from the previous cruise that shows they do listen to what we have to say and I'm sure and constructive feedback would be much appreciated.

    What I liked:

The pool deck stage. There were a lot of complaints last year about the safety of it and the awkwardness of the setup, with exposed poles, steps and limited space. This new design went above and beyond what I could have ever expected. The floor space was huge, the railings were a great safety net on the edges and there was no risk of getting impaled. The stage itself looked great and was much, much bigger than it was last year. That was without a doubt the place to go to catch a show on the cruise. It was beautiful. Great job in putting that design together.

Was it just me or was the beer selection a little better than last time? Seeing Sam Adams on broad made me quite happy.

I really liked that we were allowed to be inside the Chorus Line between bands. Last year, there was always a clusterfuck of people outside the theater before a show would start as we would get kicked out of the theater between each set for some reason. I noticed this time that the doors were always open.

Merch. I had no issues with the merchandise. I've seen some griping in people's recaps but when I got to the 70K merch line I only had to wait about 15 minutes. It was open for a longer period of time too. It was nice to see 2011 merch available for those that may have missed out last year. I'd still love to see a preorder option, so hopefully that can happen next time.

The house music. I noticed a lot of wishlist bands being played. Were you mocking us, Andy? I liked setting the tv in the cabin to the channel that was playing a wide array of bands all day.

The UMC crew. Never talked to the Skipper (you always looked so busy when I saw you!) but Blake and Allison were super friendly when I met them. As I mentioned, they seem genuinely interested in our concerns and what we liked about the trip. Maybe we can have a UMC meet and greet next year.

    What I didn't like

The sound. It was fine for some bands, but overall I thought the mix was a bit worse than last year's was on every stage.

The noise level in the Boleros Lounge. Never thought I'd need ear plugs to watch karaoke. Made it tough to hold a conversation with people in there too.

Smoke in the Spectrum. I probably sound like a broken record at this point but it was really annoying. Again, I saw people smoking on all sides of the room, when I thought it was supposed to be limited to one side. The smoke really dried out my eyes and throat and made my clothes stink. Saw quite a few (great) sets in there so that was kind of annoying. I know a few bands had both their shows in that venue and hopefully next year it can either be a little less smokey or each band will have a chance to play at more than just the Spectrum.

Not really something UMC can control but I did see some property damage in the Chorus Line on the last full day of the cruise. Maybe it was just an accident but hopefully all cruisers can take extra care to be respectful of the ship. I want these events to continue and if we want to be let back on, let's leave the ship in better shape than when we got on ;)

Not gonna bitch too much about the delays in getting the pool stage set up as I thought they did a great job in making up for the lost time with the rescheduling. Hopefully it didn't fuck anyone else's plans up too much. Also running order related, I would've liked to see Alestorm's opening set in the Chorus Line. Being the first show of the cruise, the Spectrum was just too small to handle everybody in there.

I'm sure I'm forgetting quite a bit again but hopefully this can get the ball rolling. Interested on seeing what others have to say.

Pretty much the only thing I can complain about is the cigarette smoke. God I hated having to inhale that all the time. That was one of the reasons I avoided the Spectrum lounge as much as possible. Other than that, I had the time of my life again

I can deal with the smoke, I would prefer not to as I'm asthmatic but it just seems to come with the territory.
Wonderful event in general. I do plan to provide a lengthy post about my virginal experience. For now, a few minor thoughts:

More karoake spaces seem necessary for this bunch. Perhaps in the casino or the Viking Lounge. We love our Karoake and the wait was brutal as hell

A side act or two. Let me propose Brian Poshein as a comedian between sets. He is a diehead metalhead from what I understand.
A burlesque show would be amazing but, I admit, lavish

An event emcee could be interesting for the pool acts. Someone to come on stage before the band and drum up cheers. You wouldn't need to pay this person as there are many metalheads who would relish it
Hire the elecric violinist to play between sets. I could listen tto him all day! And I think he'd like the exposure :viking:
    Spread signings out if possible.

Expand 70k merch. A beer stein, beach towels, matchbooks, beercan coolers (coozies), unique shit basically. If I could get a 70k Lunch Box I totaly would!
Moichandising, Moichandising (*Voice of Yogurt in Space Balls)
    The 70K flamethrower!!

Lastly and perhaps the biggest pipe dream....a tee shirt should be standard with the ticket. A small welcome package with any of the following:
Full running lineup over 4 days. Something stronger than printer paper
1 beer voucher to start the journey
One T-shirt per customer. Have them printed in Miami and get em right on the boat cheap. It would be a great token of thanks

Oh and we gotta reiterate to Royan Carribean that running out of Whiskey is a bit of a faux-pas. Silly non metal heads assuming we had plenty

    What a great time though!!!

I'm totally picking up what you're putting down there Neck Wrecker - well said.

The welcome pack would be really nice. I half expected something like that this year, as we have spoken of it previously.

Even if it was just a lanyard to put your sea pass card in! I was prepared though and packed one of my own (and got lots of comments on how great an idea it was lol)

I thought the stages were gorgeous. The sound was grand. The running order was almost flawless - I only had a couple of difficult decisions to make. And the line-up was incredible.

The ship was lovely, the food was decent, the cabins were fine. The ship's staff were brilliant.

    Almost everything was perfect.

My one - my only! - complaint was the merch. It seemed like half the bands didn't have anything (but maybe that's my own fault for waiting for the line to die down). I was hoping to pick up a lot more goodies. Sure I was expecting to spend over $200, but spent under $100. And damnit I wish I'd gotten one of those Candlemass shirts!

What would be really sweet would be to add a couple of 3rd-part retailers. Be it from a decent distro, a good shop, or a couple of record labels... a bit of extra shopping would have been amazing. Handful of extra guys, bit of extra cargo, no problem like.

And if instead of one long table, if there were several tables and extra staff, wouldn't the merch line have been less of an issue? I tried once, people were saying 3 hours; fuck that. I tried again, they were saying 2 hours; fuck that. Third time, 15 minutes, ok, fine. But damn. Given the demand for the merch, couldn't the supply and service have been more extensive?

Some good ideas there Neck-Wrecker, especially the beer voucher and free tshirt! Brian Posehn would be great to have as a side act. He's hilarious.

That is a brilliant idea! I still think this guy should have been hired to perform Cannibal Corpse covers, either in the Boleros Lounge, or while we're waiting in the merch line to keep us entertained.

70K patch would be so cool!!!
Overall I was very pleased. There were some running order issues for me but I made it work in the end.
I couldn't stand the Spectrum. I couldn't see anything unless I was in the very front, but then the sound was bad.
Other than that, I was very happy with everything. Pool stage was the best

The best thing UMC can do right now if announce MY DYING BRIDE for the Barge to Hell.

Like every band who has played either cruise, they loved it and would do it again.

This would ensure an immediate booking for me and the wife. Plus, I would go into mad "pimping mode" as a Thank You for doing this.

I've got to give huge props to UMC. Andy was nothing but nice and helpful despite putting out a dozen fires an hour (did he even sleep?). I never got a chance to talk to Blake or Allison in person, but they both helped me out a lot on the phone during my planning phases, and I would like to thank them for that.

And then, Raymie. I don't know where he stands on the pecking order, but he bent over backwards for us. Taking time out of his day to orchestrate a half dozen security guards to lift a beastly contraption onto the pool deck so that Bailey could actually see Nightwish was totally above and beyond. Clearing out the front row so she could get a spot worthy of paying a thousand dollars for was something he really didn't have to do, I suspect he didn't even have the time to do it. But he made it happen anyway. He made this trip worth it for her to come.

So for making this one of the best years of either of our lives, we would like to say thank you, UMC. You are paragons of customer service and I cannot wait to do business with you again. Cheers!

    This.
2012 - You never forget your first time. And MDB.
    Barge - Ruled. Period.
2015 - Booked early, disappointing lineup.
2016 - Awesome. Best lineup since Barge.
2018 - Good lineup, great time.
    2021 - Hypocrisy or bust.

99% positive rating for me. Nothing on the planet compares to this event. You can't please everyone all the time, but I have very little to complain about and I had a freaking blast (again) and I will be back next year for sure. Prolly can't do BTH though.

Sound maybe wasn't consistentlyas good as last year, but still better than most concerts I attend. Last year was the gold standard as far as I'm concerned.

Get me a real freaking beer koozie PLEASE!!! That lifejacket thing is not what I wanted. It's not ergonomic at all so it's hard to hold for hours on end and frankly it's cheesy and looks silly. I just need the simple neoprene style that folds flat so I can stick it in my back pocket. They are the cheapest ones to make too. Black with '70000tons of metal' in white. Simple, elegant, functional, cheap.

....and I would fully support any and all efforts to make the Spectrum lounge NON-SMOKING. I must have smoked almost 2 packs a day during the trip and even I couldn't stand to be in the Spectrum lounge at times.

Karaoke bar was too smokey as well. On the last night , I said "fuckit" and propped the doors open on both sides that lead outside, to air the place out. Wished I had thought of that sooner.

Only other thing I can think of would be directed at a couple of the douchbags that were harassing band members for autographs and photos at exactly the wrong time and place. Rule of thumb: if someone is eating food (you can usually tell this is the case as they will have food in their freaking mouth).... don't fucking bother them. That's just common sense and common courtesy. That's what the meet and greets and hanging out at the bars are for! DUH! Let's stay classy folks. If bands starting getting wind that being on the cruise is pain-in-the-ass because the fans are a bunch of ass-holes, they won't want to come.

Anyone think we'll ever see Venom do one of these again? "Bring your fucking brains next time!" ~ Cronos (2nd best quote of the whole cruise - Jeff Waters Anal Eaters story is #1)

Cheers to Aaron, Blake, and Allison for putting this all together. You guys deserve a raise. :beerbang:

Yeah saw this a couple of times too - Tommy from Amorphis was trying to watch a gig (forget which one) and people were constantly coming up asking for photos. WTF? Let the dude enjoy the gig people! He eventually moved further into the crowd so as not to be bothered.

Saw the same thing with the guys from Nightwish and Stratovarius at another gig - they eventually got fed up and left :(

I really like your idea about a welcome package. With Shiprocked we got a cool full color fold out schedule of all the events. A nice souvenir. They could also see if any bands or sponsors wanted to give anything away. Granted one band wouldn't want to provide 2000 items but if each band provided something that would be nice, possibly stickers or just promo info.

40+ items in welcome packs with free t-shirts and beers? How about they throw in a handy-j too? :wank:

We can't even get fucking announcements let alone physical goods! Closest thing you'll get this is one of the free napkins that have 70K printed on them :P

    The Good:

Pool Deck Stage - Best venue on the planet IMO
Chorus Line - No complaints, agree with Moog it was cool that you could go in whenever so no stupid pre-show crowds
    Karaoke - Fun Overload

    The Less than Good:

Spectrum - I hate that pit. The smoke, the shit sound, the flat "only see the top of the bands' heads floor. Someone suggested Boleros for the third venue, I agree, Karaoke would be fine in the Spectrum.
Merch line blew - I didn't even bother and all I wanted was a 70K shirt. Hopefully the throw them onto the webstore post haste.
knock it off with the extra 2 filler bands that no one gives a damn about. That would give some schedule flexibility in case something goes awry, like say, a pool deck being completed 3 hours late...

    Suggestions:

Everything Neck-wrecker said, he's a smart lad, I like him.
Limit smoking to outdoors only, fuck breathing that cancer causing poison indoors.
KEEP AT LEAST ONE SIDE OF THE WINDJAMMER OPEN 24 HOURS! That seems like a no-brainer

That would be awesome. I'd rather see the Windjammer open long and late hours than that crappy pizza spot. Wonder if Andy can convince Royal Caribbean to do that.

That would be awesome, but I have worked in kitchens before. It would be very difficult I can assure you. Too much to clean and cook, you might as well keep the whole thing open, but then you'd have to have a bigger kitchen crew (the staff is already working almost 24 hrs a day). And there would be a lot of food that would go to waste.

Besides, it's more metal to eat pizza at 4:00am instead of caesar salad and baked chcken.

I suspect that was Kamelot. I recall headbanging with some guys, then noticed it was Emppu and Timo. Was gonna ask for a pic after the show, but for the time was just enjoying it alongside them. Suddenly a bunch of douchenerd kids swarmed them... they stuck around for a minute to satisfy them and ditched out. Totally disheartening.

To be fair that's kinda what they signed up for. At least they didn't get mobbed violently.

Sorta kinda, but not really.... I mean, where do you draw the line? Is it ok to accost them for a picture by following them into the bathroom? Is it ok to just bum rush your way into a conversation they are already having with someone else? All I am saying is that a FEW people (not everyone) did it the wrong way a COUPLE of times.

Of course the bands signed up to be part of an open party, but they shouldn't have to feel like they can't even eat some food, or watch a set, or take dump without a bunch of idiots beating down the door! All the bands took part in hanging out to various degrees and while some of them like Cronos didn't appear to want to engage in it at all, no one had the right to force them into anything and no one should have expected it like something is 'owed to them'. That's it.

    I love you all. :beerbang:

It's true, but really, have some respect. Both for the guys who are there to enjoy themselves (these kids weren't headbanging either, they were doing that crazy metalcore ninja dancing crap) and for the band on stage. Go take pictures of other people outside the venue, afterwards, or at least during a break. But not in the middle of the chorus line during a song. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if they weren't so disruptive.

And really, if you like these guys so much, why would you make them feel like crap? Why not try being nice to them or something crazy like that?

I'm glad those kids were the exception though. 99% of the people I saw were amazing.

In terms of bugging artists- honestly, in MOST places I think it is alright to stop the musicians and ask for a photo/autograph/whatever... I stopped a few when they were walking down the hallways with their heads down- but I asked politely and would have accepted if they said no they were busy. Snowy was also more than happy to take photos with people prior to the final Edguy set (both him and Oscar were there and taking photos with people throughout the set- I even saw Oscar take people's cameras and take photos of the band for them, he's so gigantic so I guess that is easy for him). For the most part I don't think people minded being stopped- they knew what they signed up for.

Of course, that may have been a different story had someone followed them into the bathroom...

Finally back in freezing Finland and at work. The trip was as perfect as possible.

    Pros
    - Spectrum on the first two nights had the best sound anywhere. Especially the Atheist gig: they had the best sound ever, anywhere.
    - Pool deck

    Cons
    - Smoking inside the ship. It could easily have been banned as there were enough places outside to go for a smoke.
    - Food at the buffet; was it me or was there less variety this year and more pizza, hot dogs etc. there?
    - Spectrum on the last two nights; did something happen as the sound was pretty horrible for some bands?

I think RCL was better prepared, thanks to UMC I guess, for us this time.
Now I just have to decide whether it's Barge or 70k I'm doing next time.
