Since there seems to be like 5 of us here who are doing all the posting these days and we all seem committed to Barge, I think a nice gesture would be for them to give us each a band of our choice. You know, keeping the forum alive, going on our 3rd cruise, we being generally awesome and all that shit.

Opeth is not going to be on Barge. There is no way. There is no need for them to do it. They are already huge in the U.S. There has never been a band as big as Opeth in the U.S. as either of the 70K cruises. These cruises bring bands that are not doing as well in the U.S. as the rest of the world. This is not an issue for Opeth. They could sell out the cruise by themselves. I could be wrong, but I'd be shocked.

Same could be said of Cannibal Corpse. If UMC throws enough $$$ there way, they would make a decision on if it's worth it or not.

I'd be slightly surprised if they were booked but not shocked. I like them, but don't need them here as rather the resources be spent on a slew of other bands.

They aren't big enough to sell out the ship by themselves. Without a doubt, they'd be a large draw and a potential headliner, but they aren't quite as big as you're making them out to be, in my opinion. I'd put bands like Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, Testament and Nightwish as bands that are just as popular, if not more than Opeth is in the States.

In terms of their style, I'd think Opeth would be more fitting for 70K than for Barge anyway.

I don't think bands get on the cruises just to get some attention in the US. It would be like any other festival, with the exception that bands need to be willing to hang out with fans

Opeth's latest album that was mostly killed by their fans DOUBLED the sales of Canibal Corpses's latest album which was reverred by fans.

Opeth sells 20K in it's first week where as bands like Corpse and Testament sell 11K

I'd put bands like Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth, Blind Guardian, Testament and Nightwish as bands that are just as popular, if not more than Opeth is in the States.

Corpse, No (11k). Bodom, no (11k). Amon Amarth, close (15k). Blind Guardian, not even close (4.4K). Testament, No (11K.. and that was awhile ago), Nigthwish, No (11k).

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think you guys realize how big Opeth is in the U.S. There is no reason for them to do this and there has never been a band thriving in the U.S. that has been on the cruise. They would just do their own tour.

I don't think bands get on the cruises just to get some attention in the US. It would be like any other festival, with the exception that bands need to be willing to hang out with fans

He could just do his own tour and hang out with fans. Why would you not have all the control in a situation like that if you could? Mikael is a self-professed millionaire and doesn't need the $ either. Finally, yes... Opeth could sell out the cruise by themselves. 2000 tickets? They do that in clubs when they have a decent name with them. In every city.

The new Opeth album has a lot of cross-genre appeal that doesn't apply just to metalheads. They could like playing music, mingling with the fans and want to take a Caribbean vacation too. I think saying there is no way they belong because they are too well known is kind of ridiculous, honestly. The goal of the promoter is to sell tickets and a band like Opeth certainly can help him meet that end. Keep in mind, the cruise is a unique setting that can appeal to bands just because of the novelty value.

I'm curious what makes you think Opeth would turn this down simply because, as you imply, it's below them. Does he come off as the type that has to have 100% control of the playing situation? What in Mikael's (and the rest of the band's) character makes you think that they hold themselves to that type of regard? Maybe he'd like to do this as a fun way for some of the band's more devoted fans to have a special show with them.

Also, and this is really important, this cruise is not just fans from the US. In fact, most of the cruisers come from outside the United States.

Yeah, I agree. I mean, I'm not saying they will be on, but don't think it's a definite no. Along with the reasons mooyagi posted, it could also be an opportunity to mingle with a bunch of other bands in a different setting. I guess only time will tell, but I don't think anyone could give a definite yes or no, unless they heard it from the band themselves.

I'm not disagreeing with that. A band of Opeth's stature in the U.S. has not done the cruise yet. I don't think one will.

Opeth then would do their own show then with their own devoted fans. Mikael can take his own caribbean vacation. It's not "below" them. Once you pass a certain point, you call the shots. Not someone else. I look at 70K cruise the same as ProgPower USA. Why do you think bands like Dream Theater have never done that show? It's not viable for them to do it. This cruise (2000 tickets, world wide 1 off show, does not scale to A List bands). I'm waiting to be proven wrong. Machine Head would also be surprising.

Also, and this is really important, this cruise is not just fans from the US. In fact, most of the cruisers come from outside the United States.

Agreed, but it was set up for U.S. fans to see bands they generally don't get to see. Same deal as ProgPower. You can't control that Germans and others want to spend insane amounts of money to go on this and that people from the U.S. are not buying up the tickets.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. Do you put a band like Lamb of God at the same level as Opeth in the States (not a fan so I could be exaggerating their stature but I thought they were a huge draw in the US too)? I ask because there was a lot of talk after the first cruise about them being asked to be on it (not sure if it is indeed true) so that would show that UMC is capable of trying to book bands of that level.

My main disagreement with you is just because it sounds like you are making a lot of assumptions about what they would do. There's also the draw of Opeth members being able to hang out with and see some of their favorite bands during the festival. As for Dream Theater, were they ever asked to be on ProgPower? Perhaps they come at too high of a price for that festival, but as you mentioned, Mikael doesn't need the $$ so Opeth could be had for less. Does a band have to make money or gain new fans to do a show?

I do see it as the US group being one of the target audiences, but UMC has promoted this event all over. Note the various press releases from all kinds of metal media over the world, including the metal press presence on the actual ship. Hell, the first many heard of it was during a promo at Wacken a few years ago.

Actually Opeth have played on a cruise before back in '08. It was called the Melloboat and sailed from Sweden to Finland then back across the Baltic sea. Katatonia was there as well. It was on the weekend of my birthday and I was fortunate enough to attend that event. I got to hear Opeth's soundcheck too. In fact, you can watch me checking out their soundcheck on youtube. I'm towards the end of the videohttp://youtu.be/JsYOfdiaU7U . I had the oppurtunity to mingle with the band members and they seemed like cool guys. Fredrik Akesson is probably one the nicest guys I've ever met. Well after the cruise I did keep in touch with Fredrik and Mike via myspace. I saw the band a couple of times after that cruise too. I figured hey they know me from the cruise so I would probably get in good with them and they'll let me hang with them backstage or on their tour bus right?

Wrong.

Last year when they did their U.S. tour in the fall, I purchased the VIP tickets they were offering for that tour. The VIP was waaaay overpriced. In the past whent they have done VIP tours, fans got to hear their soundcheck and meet the band afterwards. Well on the day of the show I get to the venue and hear their soundcheck going on. I figured hey I payed way too much for the VIP I'm entitled to hear the soundcheck. So I go into the venue and this guy I think it was their your manager, comes up to me and starts yelling at me to get out. I tried explaning to him I was VIP and that the website said we could see the soundscheck. But this guy was a real asshole and wouldn't listen to me so I got pissed off and told him fuck you. The asshole almost banned from the meet and greet. So I waited in line with the other VIPS and by the time they let us ,they barely gave us 15 min. to the hang with the band. After that whole ordeal, it ruined my enjoyment of the show and the setlist was a real bore. First Kim Gosselin than this

My friend suggested I watch the making of the Heritage to see how the band is doing and it's not good. Per left the band because he didn't like the direction they are going in and Mike has turned into a real arrogant bastard. I highly recommend you watch this documentary on youtube.

So I don't believe Opeth will be on either Barge or 70k tons. Mike's ego has gotten way out of control. But If they do, I would still like to see Fredrik again because he will always be cool with me.

So they've been good with fans on a cruise before but during a VIP event (which I doubt the bands really set the terms) you had a bad experience with a member of the tour management team? Not sure you can blame Opeth for the VIP thing though that does sound like an awful experience for you. Especially because I recall how expensive those tickets were going for. That sucks. Still sounds like they could do a cruise but that would suck unless what you say about Mikael from the DVD is true. If he is now an arrogant bastard I certainly wouldn't want him to take up a spot on the ship.
