Visiting from UK, where to spend a week after 70k

    by kaliska » Wed Jul 11, 2012 10:45 am

So my boyfriend & I have just acquired tickets for the mighty 70K but since it's miles away from good old England we want to make a 2 week holiday out of our trip and do something after the cruise. We thought about Disney/ Universal & the Space Center but we've both been already (albeit many years ago). If you had to recommend one place in the USA to visit where would it be and why? Not necessarily thinking theme park etc - just anywhere you could spend a weeks holiday.

    Thanks!

How far from Florida are you willing to go?

Just about anywhere! By the time we've crossed the ocean internal flights aren't really an issue so we're happy to take connections to other states to visit cool places.

I'd recommend a road trip. Even if you can rent a vehicle (maybe and RV?) one way and take two weeks to drive to the west coast, stopping in various places along the way and fly home from there. Depends on your budget.

Last year we drove around in Florida : cape canaveral, universal park, everglades and key west.
    That was very nice !

This year we went to the bahama's and hardrock hotel miami.
    That also was awesome !

Next year we want to fly to costa rica.

    So a lot of options.

    Have fun !

Costa is awesome. I've been twice, hope to make it back again some day too.

As for the original poster, what we suggest would depend on what you enjoy doing. The US is huge, so if you are driving, you want to stay in the southeast part of the country though. Look into Savannah, Georgia. One of the favorite places I've been to in the US. Then you could swing over to Tennessee and the Smokey Mountains, Memphis, and Kentucky perhaps. There are lots of options. If you're a history buff you could probably do a whole civil war related tour in the south/east that would be really cool too.

Thanks guys, I'll look into the places you mentioned :D For some reason I never really considered doing a tour but now I'm thinking that even though we don't have time to drive all the way to the west coast a short road trip may be just the thing - it would be great to travel around a bit and see the sights.

if you have time to go to New Orleans i believe this is by far the coolest city in the entire Southern USA. BY FAR.

In fact it might as well be the only city in the southern USA.

sorry, something stuck in my throat.

You'd definitely have to fly to New Orleans from Florida though probably. The drive through Alabama/Mississippi might be a little too eye opening for our foreign friends. lol

USA is pretty lame...if you can't make it up to Canada I'd suggest holing up in a decent hotel and looking at pictures of Canada online.

Bottom end six pack is $9, you could definitely get some for $15+. The steak is double what I'd usually pay, you got ripped off there. I just came from one of the more upscale places in my city and I saw for 2/3 that price.

austin is the only other cool city in the south yes. i thought of it, but it feels like "texas" isn't the south, it's a lone category until itself. so really i do like austin, just got hung up on the classification. i damn well can see on a map that it's a southern city though....

As an American from the Florida pan-handle my favorite places are Key West and New Orleans to visit. Just throwing in my 2 cents.

Palm Springs Ca. is very cool. You can go from 100 degrees in the desert 60 degrees on Mt San Jacinto in about 20 minutes!
Las Vegas is awesome too. Besides what every one thinks of Vegas the land surrounding it is breathtaking.
Plus one day my wife and I hit 8 brewpubs all in the Las Vegas area.

now if we're talking beer, you must come to Denver, beautiful city near the Rockies with the best selection of local breweries in the entire nation!!!

but i was thinking the point of this was to stay sort of in the area....which i would say New Orleans is a little far but still do-able and the best place one can go in the southeastern usa.

sorry, something stuck in my throat.

You'd definitely have to fly to New Orleans from Florida though probably. The drive through Alabama/Mississippi might be a little too eye opening for our foreign friends. lol

    True!!

Kaliska, you're from England, so all you need is to watch Top Gear's "American Road Trip" episode.
For Americans, it includes cars, guns, hillbillies, driving thru the South.

    Hey!
Dixie will rise again and the Redneck Riviera is a very pretty drive from Pensacola to New Orleans.

austin is the only other cool city in the south yes. i thought of it, but it feels like "texas" isn't the south, it's a lone category until itself. so really i do like austin, just got hung up on the classification. i damn well can see on a map that it's a southern city though....
