    The Cripper Award

by Stained Class » Tue Dec 11, 2012 3:59 pm

Someone mentioned this on facebook and I wanna make this an actual thing, because why not
Basically, a band that noone (or almost noone) has heard of that comes on and kicks major ass, surprises people and gains a lot of new fans.

    70K 2011 - Cripper
    runner up - The Absence

    70K 2012 - Diamond Plate

    BTH 2012 - Seita
runners up - Headcrusher, Dark Sermon, Abiotic

    70K 2013 - Nightmare
runners up - Steel Engraved, Fatal Smile

    70K 2014 - Izegrim
    runner up - Nekrogoblikon

    70K 2015 - Masacre
runner up - Claim The Throne

Essentially this is the 'Best New Artist' award.

All the bands on 70K2K13 so far may not be "big names" (Subway to Sally, for example, isn't big outside of Germany), but they're all established acts. Usually the last few bands will give us a younger band with an opportunity to impress.

Yeah, that's one way of looking at it, however Cripper and The Absence from the first cruise had 3 albums out at the time so "new" doesn't really describe them either. "Up and coming" might be a better adjective. Either way, you get what I mean. We'll get some for 70k for sure.

Uh oh, we have a dispute? Anyone else on barge manage to catch some of the smaller bands? Do Loudblast qualify? I'm not sure how popular they were before the cruise.

    201170k-- Cripper or Sabaton
2012--Joey mentioned Diamond Plate--I saw both sets and they were really good--super high energy--if you like Overkill--you'll like these guys

I have either Seita, or Headcrusher as 2 stand out for me . new or up and coming as you say (this does not stand out as my top performances of the cruise .... those go to a couple established bands I won't mention here)

as far as sets go I seen Seita early morning and to me the vocals were cut/ weak in the mix, which drops them a point , but high energy, good musicianship I was very impressed by what I heard.... Headcrusher I saw their later set..... strong powerful performance , was a good listen for me. [these might not of been their best shows, as I only saw part of both, but do refer to what I saw]

either way they both get a thumbs up ........ so glad I got a chance to see them on Barge, as I probably would of overlooked both of them otherwise.

If they read the forums.......... Awesome job guys, look forward to see what you do in the future  :beerhorns:

70k 2011: The Absence (Arsis was also awesome, but I wouldn't count them as newcomers or up and coming)
70k 2012: Didn't see any of the "filler" bands.

Sabaton and Arsis are not eligible for the Cripper award.

Kevin, I agree on that point, that's why it's called the Cripper award ;)

Updated the top of the page with the overall consensus. looking forward to 70k to see who gets it!

Or do you think we should do a poll for the Barge winner?

TEHO but, to me, Diamond Plate was way more enjoyable than Cripper. Both performed well but Diamond Plate just plays a style of music that I prefer.

Yeah I don't see any yet either. I've never heard of Ektomorf but looks like they have been around a long time and have a lot of albums. We'll get some last minute additions though.

I don't think that Ektomorf would count. I did not know the band until they got announced for 70,000tons, but did some research. One of their albums even made it in the German charts and they have over 100,000 listeners on last.fm... so not an up and coming band by any means.

Most of the barge bands that were nominees were within the last week before departure. I'm actually curious to see who we're gonna get and if they'll be any good.

I only have one band on my wishlist that would qualify for this award if added - Pythia.

Great little female-fronted symphonic band from the UK. Been together 4 years, two albums, only about 10k listeners on last.fm.

Would love to see them onbroad - would be great exposure for them, and I'm sure fans of the bands already on would dig them.

Not sure if its very likely though.....

There's a fantastic female-fronted power metal band out of Brazil called Vandroya that is releasing their first album a week before the cruise. Mooyagi posted one of their songs ('The Last Free Land') in a thread in The Engine and I've listened to it about 25 times in the past few weeks -- honestly, my favorite song of 2012.

Would love to see them on for Cripper award purposes. The last few announcements for Barge were South American bands, so maybe there's a chance. . .

Mooyagi posted one of their songs ('The Last Free Land') in a thread in The Engine and I've listened to it about 25 times in the past few weeks -- honestly, my favorite song of 2012.

Would love to see them on for Cripper award purposes. The last few announcements for Barge were South American bands, so maybe there's a chance. . .

You're a little obsessed with that song

There would be a riot if we awarded this to a power metal band. I hope Vandroya gets announced

Looks like we have some nominees

    Etecc
    Steel Engraved
    Threat Signal

I'm not really sure of the popularity of these. I've seen Threat Signal twice so I'm not sure if they count. :?

I'm pretty sure they were with Blackguard, opening for Epica.

So unless anyone says otherwise I think the clear cut winner was Steel Engraved?
