Anybody noticing problems with their ears since the cruise?

    by Bob » Tue Feb 03, 2015 10:52 am

I wouldn't have brought it up but it's been over a week and I still have pressure popping noises in both ears. I haven't noticed any loss of hearing, just this damn popping that comes and goes. Sometimes it feels like I have a swelling and my ears feel plugged, muffled. It goes away but comes back. I did get right up front many times on the front rails. I didn't wear plugs, next time I will and try to be more careful. Anyone else noticing this?

I started having tinnitus (ringing) a couple years ago, after going to a lot of shows, front row, without ear plugs. Since then, it's too late to fix the permanent damage, but I ALWAYS use earplug when I go to shows, and encourage people to do so. I ofter keep a coupe of spare plug to give to others just in case. You can buy 10 pairs for 1$ shipped on eBay...

I trully believe the volume should be lower, so we don't have to wear ear plugs, or damage our earing.
    - "If it's too loud, you're too old". Well I guess I'm getting old now :(

I hope you can get away with your situation without permanent damage

Those are probably pretty shit earplugs, might as well just screw up little pieces of paper and shove them in your ears, it works just as well and doesn't cost anything. It's worth spending extra money and buying hi-fi earplugs, they don't muffle the sound, they reduce levels without compromising quality. Perfect for concerts. Earplugs are sensible and should always be worn, a lifetime of tinitus is not worth the small cost of earplugs.

Of course the're shitty, but they have protected my earing for a couple years now. I did not find that they reduced sound quality, just volume. They work very well (at least for me). Sometime I also use some higher quality from the drugstore when I forget my cheaper one at home. I can feel they are more robust, but as far as I can tell, they do not protect me more, and the price for 2 pairs is the same than the price for 30 pairs on eBay so...
I don't mind paying whatever the price is to protect my earing, that have no price. I just go with what works

What works, compared to what works but also sounds much better. I used to wear regular earplugs as well until I discovered hi-fi plugs and noticed a major improvement in sound quality, I could still enjoy the vibe of the concert without it being awfully muffled. Of course any ear plugs will work (like paper will work, and I've actually done this on the rare occasion I forget my plugs) and what's important is protecting your hearing, but doing so while also maintaining clarity is a bonus.

Unfortunately like MikeB my ears are already blown.

Funnily enough NOT from gigs though! I actually ended up with tinnitus in my left ear thanks to a very bad bout of the flu about 20 years ago. Not metal related at all as I barely ever attended gigs at that time of my life.

Hearing specialist told me at the time that I was stuck with it, look after my hearing but don't bother going out of your way to avoid loud environments as it most likely won't get worse.

So yeah - I've never used earplugs and as per the doctor's words its never got any worse.

Having said that though, obviously EVERYONE should use hearing protection so you don't end up with tinnitus like us, because it is fucking annoying!

I actually just started wearing earplugs for the first time this cruise because the chemo I went through caused some noticeable damage to my hearing. I probably should have worn them all along but never spent the money on decent ones until now. I ended up picking this pair of Alpines after reading reviews and comparing them to a few others in the same price range. They seemed to do the trick so far so I cant complain.

Thanks messugah and Monmisreal! Do you feel a lot of difference in the sound quality wearing them and not wearing them? I'm a little bit picky with that, and I'd hate to lose quality by wearing earplus. I'd like to wear them as long as they simply reduce the volume a little bit, but if I'm gonna lose quality too... I'm not so sure.

I also began to have a problem with my left ear two days after the end of the cruise, but it is due to a cold. I began to cough at the Beach Party and the cold came only the last week and mostly on my left ear

Although most tinnitus is caused from loud noises a lot of people do experience mild cases of Tinnitus from sinus problems, sinus infections, bad colds etc.
It's also worth noting that hearing degrades as you age anyway,There is no way to prevent some of the hearing loss in our lives.
But ear plugs will help prevent more severe hearing loss.
Personally i've never warn ear plugs and my ears are still grand but i may invest in some in the near future just incase.

I dont think I noticed too much sound quality difference but I havent gone to a lot of shows since I ended treatment. The ones I have came with 2 filters so for the cruise I used the higher db filter to be on the safe side. The highs didnt seem to come through as much but that could have been a combination of damage and the filter haha. To me everything sounded pretty clear, just at a lower volumn. I didnt get any crackling or tinnitis due to the loud music though. I consider them worth it and didnt think the quality was low enough for me to care.

My previous hearing damage is noticeably worse after the cruise. I consider it worth it, but next year I'm bringing ear plugs...

I never go to a show without ear plugs. This is the first time I didn't use the crappy foam ones you can get at a pharmacy. Kate grabbed a couple of pairs from work and I like them better.

I can't use the better-quality conical kind of earplugs because they start slowly "worming" their way out of my ears, so I reluctantly use the barrel-shaped foam kind. I brought a bagful expecting to go through a lot of 'em, and ended up using just 4. Hearing was fine afterwards, though, and I heard pretty much everything at shows.

They certainly don't make sound worse. However since ultimately ear plugs are designed to protect your ears, they will probably be no use to you.

Same here. I never go to a show without earplugs. I also normally use the foam ones. They passed a city ordinance in Minneapolis where the venues have to provide free earplugs. They are the crappy foam ones from 3M. It is quite nice though.

The last 2 cruises, one of my roommates has brought along a few pairs of the nice ear plugs like those links above. So I mainly used them on the cruise. Hopefully I don't misplace the pair from this year so I can use them again.

Thanks for the links, I'm definitely gonna try one of those high fidelity plugs. I always forget to bring earplugs to concerts and I know I should use them !

Ok so for me the "good" earplug where the pharmacy one. I'll give a try to those Alpine Hi-Fi earplugs. Thanks for the link.
I often loose an earplug during a show, due to someone crowd surfing hitting my ears or something like that. I would hate it if I loose an expensive one. Do they stick better in the ears than the foamy one ?

I saw my doctor today. She said she thought my ears "may" have had some acoustic trama, but I have swelling with fluid in one and the other is retracted (whatever that means). To her these symptoms were more in line with an allergy reaction. But I will definitely use ear plugs next time. Thanks for the links, I will try some of those plugs and have backups as well.

For most metalheads, use plugs now or ya won't need 'em later (cuz you'll be deaf) are words to live by.

I already have Tinnitus but that doesn't mean I can't incur more hearing loss if I don't protect myself. I'd rather enjoy slightly reduced volume/clarity for 50 more years than enjoy loud n clear gigs for a mere 10 or 20.

As for the original topic here, I suspect that popping and pressure is more related to congestion and travel than loud music.

I had a cold on the last day of cruise and experienced horrible earache/pressure during my flight'so descent into Seattle. The left ear seemed to clear once we landed but the right was buggered for a week afterwards and even the left a little. Wasn't unti the cold cleared up that both ears returned to normal.

If it's really bad, there's a truck divers use to deal with compression where ya plug your nose, take a a deep breath then close your mouth and gently force air out your ears but this has risks associated with it as well so they say not to do it too hard or to do it too frequently. you can google it up by searching for 'How to fix ears after flying'
So far at least, 2011, 2012 & 2015 were enough for me
