Reading the answers that NeO gave in their Facebook page, it seems very obvious that they wanted to be onbroad but they either got no reply or they were told there was no interest in them.

This is a major mistake from Andy & co.

THAT is a very real possibility.

A band was once un-invited to our SF/fantasy convention here in ATL (DragonCon) for exactly that reason: their fans were spamming the convention office with phone calls and emails.

I might be at all 4 of those shows, but will definitely be at 2 of them... real sets, the band will actually make money, and I don't have to deal with cof & bb and the people they'd draw out... I'm happy

I want to think that's not the reason. I really want to think we have a serious, mature, responsible organizer, ready to take some criticism and demands with dignity and empathy. Call me a dreamer :)

Shame they were not booked. I was really hoping for that since it made complete sense. Too bad the headliner gigs are during the cruise and/or out of the way. Still I will try to go to the gig in Orlando and probably leave after they are done. I know it will be a short set but is better than nothing. Chances to get NeO in Brazil are very slim :/

They said on Facebook they loose money for every night they don't play, so they didn't want to take a 5 day vacation. Perhaps they weren't going to be paid for the cruise, so they declined in favour of a few headline gigs?

Well, there can only be two reasons for NeO not being onbroad: either they got no reply from UMC or they got an insufficient offer. From this point onwards, it's all about pure speculation. Knowing UMC, both possibilities make perfect sense and we know for a fact that both things have happened before.

This is a good point, and totally understandable from both sides. Come on guys Andy didn't not book them to spite everyone that requested them to be on, that's a fucking thought. Do you think a 14 year old is running this operation?

I also think its a bit narrow a viewpoint of theirs.

They loose money every night they don't play. Why? Probably because they still have to pay for accommodation, food, drinks, etc. Well guess what? Don't have to pay for any of that if you're on the cruise!

This is just COMPLETE HEARSAY on my part, but I have heard that the lead guy from NeO is a bit of a prima donna too, so combining that with my comment above - I would not be laying all the blame on Andy for this one.

I really cannot see how driving all over the US for a week to do four shows, at about $10 a head is going to be much better for them financially.....

They'd still be making money at those shows, they wouldn't be making any money on the cruise. They aren't really a big enough band to get paid to do the cruise. So they wouldn't be losing money but they wouldn't be gaining any either. Financially I can absolutely see how it would make more sense to be on the road.

Edit: I'm also not blaming Andy 100%. On UMC's side I can see why they would want NeO but not want to pay them. On NeO's side I can see why they'd want to do the cruise but they'd also want to be getting paid.

And yeah - look at it from UMC's perspective.

Got a band that tells you they are in Florida, and wanna play the cruise.

Not really a HUGE band - 63,000 facebook likes, 45,000 listeners on last.fm. Puts them ballpark around the likes of an Aura Noir, or a Tsjuder.

AND they want to be paid for it.

When Andy would have a backlog of bands similar size willing to do it for bar credit.

Nope.
They have been waiting to book shows during 70k until last minute. Wanted to be invited to play on a cruise.
No payment asked. And no, Tim is NOT a prima donna, as someone suggested. And yes, they loose even when they play every night, since they are not headliners and not yet a lockup band. This is a reason they do tours, to get better visibility.
All in all - don't spread rumors that NeO is greedy if you don't know anything. Try to talk to guys after their show.

One month out is hardly "last minute". But I get that they didn't want to risk waiting around to be invited in case it fell through and they ended up with 5 days of no work. I get that. And who said anything about being greedy? Call me crazy, but I think it's perfectly reasonable for a band to want to make a living out of what they do.. crazy idea eh. I'm not saying they need to be rockstars with shitloads of money, but keep in mind some of the guys in NeO left their day jobs to commit to the band full time, for some of them, NeO IS their job. So don't accuse me of spreading rumours if you don't know anything. Maybe they would have done the cruise for nothing, but whether they do or not is not the point. All I'm saying is it's more than reasonable to want to be paid for your work, that is not a difficult concept to grasp, there is nothing greedy about it. It was just a thought, that's it, just a thought with no malicious intent.

And I know they are friendly guys, but I have no interest in talking to musicians just because they're in a band, I'm not a fanboy. When they came through London I just saw them, bought a CD - got it signed, then went home. Besides there were too many girls oggling over them anyway.

I did say I understand they didn't want to wait on it in case it fell through, did I not? And they weren't planning a tour, they were filling in dates on an already scheduled tour while COF is on 70k. I assumed that was already clear.

Not a problem here in Atlanta. They had the longest merch line of all three bands BY FAR. I waited 30 minutes in line to get my merch...and from what I saw, they're making VERY respectable merch sales. Some fans who saw them in Asheville (I think) said the same thing had happened there, too. (Note: they can only accept cash, not credit cards...at least so far. I saw a few really disappointed people there.)

I confirmed with the band that they had offered to play 70K...for free...and were never contacted back by UMC. This was the most unkindest cut of all.

--And they were superb. I was talking to some people at the end of the night and they said they were fans of Butcher Babies and CoF, but "that first band blew BOTH of 'em away." (So I made sure they all knew how to spell the band name....all eight of 'em.

)

Those of you who will be catching a 90-minute headlining set from them stateside during the cruise, I envy you. Don't miss them. The good news is, they're pretty sure they'll be back here again.

Yep, that was me. Came across a few people who will be on 70K also...including two who were on NeO's guest-list.

As a post-script to this, my favorite cruise moment came when a guy saw me wearing a Ne Obliviscaris shirt I'd purchased at their show here on Feb. 1st, and asked to take a picture of me wearing it.
"Why?" I asked.
"I'm the lighting guy for Cradle of Filth on their current tour, and I wanted to get a photo to take back to the Ne Obliviscaris guys to show them how much support they had on the cruise."
"Oh, HELL yes!"

It was good to see that NeO have support even from the headliners' crew. They deserve it.

I have no intention of beating a dead horse, but I got some interesting info from a very realiable source. NeO offered themselves to play FOR FREE on the boat, but their offer was rejected for some reason we will probably never understand. Anyway, I'm glad to hear their headlining shows were awesome!

I saw their gig in Orlando and it was amazing. Real shame they were not on board but I am glad I still got to see them. Also got a tshirt and was wearing it on the first day.

Their lead singer told me that they weren't rejected...they just never heard back from UMC or Andy.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I'm still hoping that they'll get on the cruise this year even though they just toured the U. S. and Canada. I don't think it's likely for that reason though.

I talked to one of the guitarists after the Chicago show. He said they were invited to be on the cruise two years ago, but couldn't afford to do it. His comment about last year was what people already said. They offered to play free, but never heard back.

If we get more Aussie bands, it will a lucky coincidence as it's really expensive for them to fly here. My understanding is that Claim The Throne were asked to play the 2015 cruise only because they happened to be in the right place at the right time, and Andy took advantage.

--And Ne Obliviscaris was also in the right place (opening in the States for CoF who had already been booked), at the right time (NeO kept the cruise dates free as long as they could), willing to play for free, and were one of the most-requested bands on the Forum poll....and still didn't get booked by Andy. It truly boggles the mind.
