Phoenix wrote:I imagine we won't be seeing any announcements for a while since Andy will be busy with bookings. So how about some STATS!

I was curious about something so I thought I'd look into how many current bands would be Cripper contenders. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those were bands with less than 100k last.fm listeners? So here's what I got:

Cruachan, Demolition Hammer (somehow?), Omnium Gatherum, Orden Ogan, Powerglove, Revocation, Serenity, Stam1na, Stuck Mojo, technically Uli Jon Roth (though the Scorpions had over 1mil), Unleashed, Vreid

Interesting spread. Some of these were close with 90,000+ listeners (OG, Serenity, Cruachan). Demolition Hammer only has 30,166 listeners, which surprised me.

Its a judgement call each year - I believe the cut-off for this year was actually 10,000 not 100,000.

But that was because there were 11 bands that matched that criteria. If we get zero bands with under 10,000 then we will obviously change the criteria slightly for 2017.

Christian definitely elevated the band, but he was such a perfectionist he disliked touring so seeing them live with him was a pipe dream anyway. I'm just a big fan of their sound, their lyrical themes. Per knows his stuff.

Will probably never change the fact that Holographic Universe was their strongest material.

A band could have 14 millions followers, and still be a cripper award if it's only known in China or India.

Yeah, the criteria isn't perfect. That's why I was curious. I wasn't paying much attention to Cripper 2016, didn't know there were so many bands less than 10,000 listeners on the lineup. So far, the lowest amount of listeners was Uli Jon Roth, with only about 12,000.

Very cool to see Scar Symmetry and Marduk added. :headbanger: :bmhorns:

I'd love to see Primordial onbroad, but the clue points elsewhere.

My guess for the clue and the way things have been booked this year is Pro-Pain ,not Pain.It would be another USA Band from the New York area. Not really a band I care for that much either.

Pro-Pain has been around for a long time and rarely play the States so that would make sense. I just saw them live for the first time about two months ago and they were super tight. I've been a fan for over a decade and that was my first shot at seeing them. I would love to have more shots on the boat.

I'll take Primordial for that P spot. Seems everyone thinks it's Pain, I'll have to give that one a thumbs down, would be nice if it meant Hypocrisy was coming too though..

As Primordial seems to be the popular choice, and I am not familiar with their overtures
    - I shall make it my mission to check them out today.

Man, I love discovering new music ..

The new album is Primordial's worst (still better than most bands), so I'd suggest starting with the amazing Redemption at the Puritan's Hand, and make your way to the older albums. Storm before Calm is probably my favourite album from them even if The Gathering Wilderness has the best song, by any band, ever: The Coffin Ships.

Pro-Pain has been around for a long time and rarely play the States so that would make sense. I just saw them live for the first time about two months ago and they were super tight. I've been a fan for over a decade and that was my first shot at seeing them. I would love to have more shots on the boat.

    :shots:

I have went to several of their shows and only once did they end up playing and I thought they were great live and that was the 99 Act Of God tour. I would love to see them again

I tend to agree. Where Greater Men Have Fallen has much to be desired compared to other albums from Primordial. I had trouble getting into it. I still dig it though

    by Andy » Fri Aug 19, 2016 10:29 am

Do you feel that? The PAIN of not already being onbroad The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise?

Hang in there sailors... only 167 more days until you embark on the grand adventure that is called: 70000TONS OF METAL, The Original, The World's Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise!

Missing the boat? That may be as painful as digging your own "G".

Huh. Is it me or have we had more old school bands than normal? Feel free to correct me, I just keep noticing all these bands that have been active since the 80s or early 90s on the roster.

According to some, we have zero old school death metal bands. I have no idea about Grave.

I didn't mean specifically death. I just meant, bands that have been around for a very long time. Anthrax, Testament, Grave Digger, Demolition Hammer, Uli, and now possibly Grave? I might just be noticing it now because I'm paying attention though.
