Is this cruise suitable for non-metalheads?

    by Bolth_Mannn » Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:05 pm

Hi. I live in Australia so if I was to come on this cruise, it would have to be a family event (I'm underage so I can't travel alone). I'm the metalhead in my family, my dad likes most of the stuff I play him and loves live atmospheres so he'd be fine. My sister is a 'closet' metalhead, she doesnt like or pursue metal but she likes quite a lot of the bands I play and my mum absolutely hates metal. (well she'd be fine with stuff like Sonata Arctica but on the whole, she does not enjoy metal.)

Talking to the organisers here, are there enough facilities on board to keep my family interested inbetween carribean stops? Library, quiet areas of the boats, stuff like that. And also, is it 'safe' to take my sister and mother to a heavy metal cruise ship such as this? I really want to come on this cruise but need to know whether my whole family will be able to enjoy it if they don't enjoy metal.

To be perfectly honest, this cruise is pretty much a Metal Festival at sea. The passengers by and large will be Metalheads, aside from the actual crew compliment. I wouldn't really be concerned about the safety of your family. There will be some rowdiness I'm sure, but nothing that can't be dealt with. Considering the cost, most people aboard will likely be a bit more on the responsible side, as they can probably hold down a job long enough to actually pay for it. That's my theory anyway ;)

As far as ships facilities go, I think you should review the following website: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruise/ships/class/ship/home.do?shipCode=MJ

You may also want to pose some questions to the organizers about any available NON Metal activities aboard ship.

The only stop the ship is making, is in Cozumel (Mexico). The route being: Miami - Cozumel - Miami. So you might want to look into what kind of tourist type things you can do in Cozumel, and the adjacent mainland. There are things to do there such as visiting the Mayan Pyramids, Scuba Cave Diving, Snorkeling, Swimming with Dolphins (or even Whale Sharks!) and other things. These things will also cost you some money, aside from the cruise itself, so get to Googling and see what else you can dig up.

Hopefully your family won't be TOO traumatized by the whole experience

Yes it would be safe for your family.
While metalheads mayb be destructive while drunk they are for the most part non -violent people.More so than most people.
If there was any form violence(I know from festival experiences) metalheads will jump in and stop it before security would be even needed.
Thats the way it is in the metal scene.True metalheads always look after one another.

If you're looking for non metal sctivities there is a gym with a personal trainer which is included in the price.
Also you have rock climbing at the back of the boat and pools to swim in.
Hot tubs to relax in and even restaraunts or lounges to chill out in which will probably be less noisy than other parts of the boat.

I really don't believe they will be under any risks while onboard. But I can't also think they will enjoy the trip, unless they get into the spirit of the stuff.

It's a down you can't travel alone. They could go on another cruise while you are on this. I hope you find a solution. Remember you must have the ideal age by January, not now.

There are plenty of other entertainment options, the casino, the spa and many other amenities of the cruise ship, that will operate like on an ordinary cruise. Plus you have an entire day in Cozumel, with no concerts at all.

The ship will be mainly populated by metalheads of course, but taking into account that your family lives with a metalhead, it
can't be that bad. It will be certainly a different atmosphere than at a normal metal concert or festival, and the ship is huge. There will definitely be certain corners of the ship and it's decks where you will be able to get away from the hustle and bustle and just lay in a deck-chair. I guess you will have to judge for yourself, if you are the only metalhead that your family accepts, and your Mother doesn't like the music, you may want to consider finding someone that is 21 years or older that your parents would let you go with. Or you could see if you Mother and Sister want to stay in Miami Beach, while your Father and you are both on the cruise. That way both parties would have a great vacation! On the flip side this would be a unique opportunity to show your family a totally different type of metal party then anyone has ever seen, who knows, maybe even your Mother will come back home being a metal fan...?

I haven't been in many concerts, but for the few I've gone, metalheads are not the image the world has of them at ALL! Metalheads live for music, and in general, they are really nice people... with long hair =) I can understand your mom being kinda scared cuz it happens the same to me. I have to assure my mom every time that it IS safe going to metal shows. And when she asks me how did the show go, I always say it was the most exciting experience. Cuz it's true. I hope your mom can understand that.
I think there are a casino, gym, pools and lounges that your mom and sister can go and stay. They will probably lose fear of metalheads since they will be living with them for 4 days =P And who knows, maybe your sister gets out of the closet in this trip!
I, myself, may be in the non-metal stuff of the ship cuz not all the bands are appealing to me. Plus, I just learned how to headbang properly some months ago, so I'm going to need to rest my neck between shows

Or you can do what one of the guys here above suggested: you and your dad can go on the Cruise, and your mom and sis can stay in Miami Beach. Since you'll probably need a vacation from the ship, you can join our sis and mom for a couple of more days in Miami, and go to Disneyworld. It's a family trip, right :)

I am the mother of 2 Metalheads. I did not listen to metal music before they introduced me to it. I'm glad they did- I loved most of it when I first began listening to it and have gone to many concerts and some festivals. If your family appreciates music, and is open to new experiences, they may have a total blast. They may not like all the genres, but they can find something else to do on the ship during those times. I hope they come with you.

We should organize an all drunk metalhead brawl in one of the bars, while Korpiklaani's "Beer beer" plays in the background.

With 40 bands x 2 shows each = 80 shows. That's 16 shows per day for each of the first 4 days (since no shows on Jan 28 - depart the ship in the morning). But if you don't have them when the boat is in port, how in the world can you fit all those shows in ???

(nice dilemma to have though :D )

yah, its going to be a one of a kind event.. On the Simple Man Cruise I slept maybe 10 hours the entire 4 days. Watching the sun come up was totally breathtaking. :) It was funny though they had freestyle improv jams in the lobby and stuff. They went on until well past sunrise.

They have several stages. I guess some bands will play simultaneously. If you go to the big European festivals it's the same thing. Nice that the bands play two shows, so if you missed one, you still have another shoot... :shred:

This is posted under the site's FAQ. I checked this out a couple of week's ago out of fear of missing a show.

"When will the running order be available?

The running order for 70000tons of METAL will be posted a few weeks before we sail. Performances will take place at multiple venues on board the ship. We want to make sure that you'll be able to see each and every band on board perform an entire show, so no two bands will perform at the same time twice.

Casinos can be fun if you're into the gambling thing. I like playing poker but doubt its something I'll want to do on this cruise. And besides, if you go to the deck plans page and check out their description of the Casino Royale on Deck 5, you'll notice something, well, a little fishy about one of the games they offer
