Her character in Lost was quite a whore, imo, so you never know.

And Black Swan confused my boner.

Dan - Viathyn was referring to Natalie Portman. And btw, V - thanks a lot for the Natalie buzzkill - not! Robert Mapplethorpe photographed a lot of hard-core gay sex scenes including what you were describing - a relatively small % of his total output but which still caused a HUGE flap more than 20 years ago - especially when it was found out that he had gotten some government funding for his "art." Anyway, we've got at least 20 Mapplethorpe books where I work. I love most of his work - especially his flowers and traditional nudes - but some of it - no. :| Image
If anyone doesn't know of him, his work is worth checking out. He was good friends with Patti Smith and took some great pics of her including an album cover or two.

Yet, I digress.... Dan - how was Kate on Lost a whore? I don't think that word describes her character at all! If I recall, she hardly even fooled around much with either Jack or Sawyer while on the island. Shit - if I had THOSE two infatuated with me (on a desert island no less), I'd be in the sack with them 24/7 (in between dodging the smoke monster and other treacherous stuff of course. ;) )

One of my favorite Mapplethorpe portraits

Yes, my sister tricked me into looking at one of his books while at a Barnes and Noble. Oh I love this artist, look, flowers, flowers, flowers, guy's arm up to the elbow in another guy's asshole. FUCK!

I avoided all talk of Lost until the entire series was out on DVD. So earlier this year, I watched all 6 seasons in a couple of weeks. Every character (with maybe the exception of Hurley) were EXTREMELY flawed characters, and they all continued to make the same stupid decisions that got them where they were, instead of taking advantage of their second chance, like they said they would. Kate was only looking for what she could get from people, and she would use sex, if necessary, to get it. She manipulated people for what she wanted, and she was hardly considerate. She was not a good or even nice person, and in my opinion, not pretty enough to put up with her bullshit. I, personally, would have nothing to do with anyone on that island, except maybe Hurley, who was still flawed.

Thanks for the long reply Dan. Too bad I don't have more time at the moment - but I will say this about Lost - I watched 95% of the Lost episodes when they first aired on prime-time (didn't have a DVR until a few months ago) - so it was over a multi-year period (since the show ran from 2004-2010). I do own all of the seasons on DVD now - but I've never watched many episodes in a row like you did - I wonder if the different ways we watched it time-wise affected response? This is going to sound so sappy, but I really grew to LOVE all of the Lost characters - I loved the slow unfolding (via the flashbacks) of how they became the people they were from their various life experiences. And I loved them precisely BECAUSE they are all so flawed. Sometimes tragically flawed. But we are all flawed of course - myself included - so I could relate to a lot in that show.

In talking with friends, it's a VERY different experience watching everything in a short time versus as they aired. It's much easier to pick up on patterns and themes when you get an entire season in 1 day, as opposed to over several months. Granted, some people probably kept up with things better through discussion groups, etc., but it was still easy to forget about things that happened 5 years ago in season 1. However, when watching them as rapidly as I did, I only had to remember a couple of weeks prior. Plus, I was taking notes about my theories along the way, and I was pretty spot on once the answers started coming.

My issue with these flawed people, and really most people, is that they keep making the same decisions that keep getting them into their horrible situations over and over. They beg for a second chance, get it, and make the same stupid decisions. They don't learn, they expect a different outcome, then bitch about how they got dealt a bad hand. (Definition of insanity?) Every single one of us are where we are because of our choices. I'm sick of people not taking responsibility and breaking out the blame-thrower every chance they get.

I'm not really as negative as this sounds.

In terms of Lost characters and real life ppl, I agree with both of your recent posts here 100% Dan

Interestingly enough, I watched the series in the same way you did as I'd recently taken a new 2nd job and all my co-workers were huge fans so I wanted to get caught up and be able to participate in the conversations. Thing I hated even more than the ridiculously stupid things the characters did was that the way the writers were clearly just making it up as they went along. They destroyed all consistency, continuity and believability by just writing new 'rules' to explain shit that got them out of dead ends they'd created over and over. Such a weak approach to creativity

Sounds like they're taking pointers from Marvel and DC. I bet the cast will soon be getting visits from their alternate-universe selves.

Yeah, the original promise of a "definite, specific and satisfying ending" just didn't materialize. It's to be somewhat expected with the writer turnover, and I'm sure the ending we got was nothing like what was originally envisioned.

I think she looks like Kate Beckinsale (only a little bit), but only half as pretty.... she is OK... but not that 'hot' to me.

Give me Kate Beckinsale instead (another reason to see the Total Recall remake!) Get your ass to MARS!

Perhaps not "typical" fare for this thread :beerwink: - but I thought Keira looked the most beautiful & elegant at the Academy Awards when she was nominated for Best Actress (Pride and Prejudice). Wow!

O' grim gods of battle, empower us this night and always,
Anoint us with the crimson rain, forever feed our steel with slaughter...
Let every blow be a killing blow, grant us eternal victory, 'til we die a warrior's death.
