It's not revolutionary or ground breaking by any means, and it has it's rough spots. But there's enough there for me to give them the benefit of the doubt, especially since Lena Abe just joined.

And I can appreciate a band of broads that don't all look like Barbie Dolls, so you know they'll only get recognition for their music, not any other bullshit reason.

Pumped everyone is getting into Powerwolf. I've been totally digging the new record, though I can't say I've "recently discovered them" (been listening for like 3-4 years).

Getting them on broad would be awesome.

Went YouTube surfing, found some decent stuff I haven't heard. So much stuff out on Napalm Records I haven't heard yet.

Fejd - Solid Swedish folk band, though there's not much in the way of electric instruments (which really isn't a band thing considering the genre.)

http://youtu.be/zg1zAaDytYo
http://youtu.be/cWEEYxFDIK0

Wolfchant - German "pagan metal". So many ridiculous sub-genres these days, but I suppose I can see how this title works in cases such as this. Sounds like mid-paced folk/black metal.

http://youtu.be/-q6bQoVrADM
http://youtu.be/SvU-iuN9OOQ

And while it's not a band I've recently discovered, after of eight years of silence, Einherjer are finally back in action. Always quality viking metal, Einherjer doesn't disappoint. Norrøn is definitely an album worth the Einherjer name and a must for any fan of the epic.

"Varden Brenne"

WARDRUNA

Unfortunately, I "discovered" them too late! They played in a theater in Bergen during one afternoon of the Hole in the Sky week. Before I went, I had decided I wasn't going to go to the few daytime gigs since I was already going to 6-8 hours every night for four nights and there were many other things I wanted to do during the days. Well, if I had REALIZED who Wardruna is, I would have gone! It is an unusual musical project of Kvifrafn, Lindy Fay Hella, and GAAHL.

from the website...
Sowing New Seeds, Strengthening Old Roots
Wardruna is a Norwegian musical constellation set out to explore and evoke the depths of Norse wisdom and spirituality. Musically Wardruna has its main focus on the cultic musical language found in the near-forgotten arts of galder, seidr and the daily acts of the cultic life, mixed with impulses from Norwegian / Nordic folk music and music from other indigenous cultures.

Here they are performing at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo (where I've been - very  )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKMDcTnezvU

and another....Kauna
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOabYzPuErI

I love this kinda stuff - for many years I listened almost exclusively to the kind of music they play on: http://www.starstreams.com/ and Wardruna reminds me of some of what they play there.

Just started listening to this band Morne from Boston. Slow and expansive, ultra heavy. Would definitely fall in the doom category, but there's much more going on. Given the previous bands these guys were associated with (crust/grind), it's a complete departure from what I was expecting. I'd recommend it to fans of Agalloch, Neurosis, Amebix, (old) Mastodon, and everything heavy. It's the same Morne that Darkthrone threw a shout out to on the cover art of their latest album Circle the Wagons. There's one song in particular that is beyond excellent, Jarboe of SWANS (also done stuff with Neurosis and whatnot) is present for the female vocals. 9+ minute epic, but all of them are really, that takes damn near 6 minutes to even hear any distortion. Absolutely superb song crafting.

Scythia from Vancouver BC, good candidate for the cruise. Folk Metal from UMC's back yard, surprised I never heard of them being so close. Interesting mix of folk and metal, kind of anthem-y.

Randomly walked into a bar last night after Enslaved with Marlo and Carly and saw this band called Azza.
http://www.myspace.com/azzafoundation

Fucking blew me away. I asked them if they had cd's for sale and they said no, it was only their second show. Recordings aren't perfect but you'll get the message from their myspace. Kinda reminded me of Obscura/Deicide. The all wore black robes and black mad scientist goggles and said that they were time travelers from the year 3010.

Absu just put out a new album Abzu (Not to be confused with their album Absu or forthcoming Apsu), which I'm pretty impressed with. What is confusing to me is that they are a band that formed in 1993 in the city that I've lived in for 12 of the last 16 years, and I've never heard of them before. WTF?! :headbanger:

I don't get tired mentioning'em...but I just can't believe how great their newest album is:
Voyager - The Meaning of I
http://youtu.be/hCBs5vvOE4E
actually, they are beyond any genre...but if I had to label'em, I'd say they are playing melodic prog metal

nice guitars - the singer doesn't offer something special, though

So I got a listen to Christopher Lee's "symphonic metal" Charlemagne.... whatever. He's got a great voice, but it's not metal. You REALLY have to search to find any guitars. So, I'll just ignore this little episode, and continue to think of him fondly as Dracula and Saruman.

Odd band from Vancouver, very old school sounding, almost like an underground 80's bands from Italy but they started making demos in 2005. Can't say they instantly remind me of anyone. Just odd, but very listenable!

From Dartmouth, Nova Scotia Rougher, Dirtier vocals than 3 Inches of Blood but same kind of Advance and Vanquish vibe at times. Heard a couple Maiden inspired riffs too.

Canadian TANKARD from Montreal! I shit you not! It's like Bob and Doug McKenzie formed a metal band and moved to Germany to learn from the masters!! Sounds so much like Tankard it's amazing. Hails to them for having good taste in metal and beer. Must buy album for me now!

New band to me, but sure some of the fourmites know them, and I make a shame shame finger gestures at them for not sharing the knowledge!

Female fronted thrash, normally I would expect a Arch Enemy clone, but the girl in this band sounds like Gwar's Slymenstra Hymen at times to me, and that's FUCKING COOL as HELL!!!!

Nuclear Disaster ( Live )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZBx5BlxP54

Rarely go to Reverbnation but did for this band
http://www.reverbnation.com/mortillery

She really does sound like Slymenstra Hymen!!!, I think I am in love! 8================>

Now I am mad at the Edmonton Herd!! For Shame!! FOR FRICKING SHAME!
