Metal On TV

Postby EvilDan » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:02 am

Didn't really want to start a new thread, but maybe we can make this broad enough to include comments on anything seen, or to let people know of upcoming stuff. Sometimes Palladia has some interesting concerts, and they replay Flight 666 quite a bit.

However, my main question was whether anyone was watching the Metal Evolution series on VH1 Classic? Somewhat surprised it hasn't been discussed. They are 4 episodes in (Pre-Metal, Early US Metal, Early UK Metal, NWOBHM), and it's interesting. I'm going to be rewatching those, and I'll probably jot down some notes.

It was also interesting to watch Marilyn Manson's decent into fucked-upped-ness on That Metal Show.
Never take anything I say seriously.

Am I Evil? I am Dan. Yes, I am!

Do NOT buy a record based on my recommendation.

I was all stoked for watching it here and had my PVR queued up to record them all and then the first episode was blank. Was then that I realized the recent re-configuration of channel packages from my cable provider had excluded MuchMoreMusic from my groups of paid for channels. Definitely gonna have to purchase it somewhere later on

I have been keeping up with Metal Evolution and so far so good. I'll definitely be catching em all...

I don't watch That Metal Show though... Eddie Trunk just annoys the piss out of me for some reason.

Same here. He acts like he's the be all, end all of everything metal. The only reason why I would buy his new book is to keep it in the bathroom in case I ran out of toilet paper.

I love That Metal Show. Watching Eddie get his dick sanded on stump the trunk is priceless! The interview they did with the ever elusive Axl Rose was top notch too.

As for Metal Evolution i've caught every episode so far and love it. Sam Dunn does some fantastic work.

Yeah, the first 4 were pretty good, going to have to suffer through the Glam Metal part (why was it even brought up during NWOBHM?), then on. Exploring classical, blues, jazz, etc. seemed well-researched, though they should have mentioned Dvorak and Wagner. Some of the others segments seem rushed. I keep expecting certain things to be brought up, but they're not. I mean, I know a good bit about metal history, but compared to some of y'all, I don't know shit.

Maybe it's when it's historical I can accept what they are saying. But when they get to the timeframe that I spent my life in, I realize all the simple tricks, all the omissions, etc.

I understand what people are saying about Trunk. He seems stuck in the 70s and doesn't seem to understand anything new beyond 1985. The Stump the Trunk portion is funny sometimes because he gets so worked up, throwing a tantrum like a small child, and he's just patently wrong.

EDIT: Just remembered the last one where he had a complete freakout that 7th Son of a 7th Son was a concept album. How can you miss it? I wanted to kick him in the ding-ding.

Yeah this last episode was the first time I felt they rushed or tried to jam too much into it at the very end. They didn't even need to mention THRASH at all and could have explored the NWOBHM just a bit more, mentioned how GLAM was starting to take hold and then end the episode. Which would have been a perfect lead in to the next episode.

When I saw them mention Metallica at the very end, I was under the impression they were skipping over glam completely and mentioned it cause they weren't devoting a whole episode to it.

I've been meaning to give my thoughts on NWOBHM and Glam (and now Thrash), but while other things were going on last night, Metal Evolution and That Metal Show were on in the background, and my sister had 2 gems of observation.

#1) "Every time I see Kerry King, I think he's going to eat someone."

#2) "Why is Nina Blackwood on That Metal Show?" It was Michael Monroe (Hanoi Rocks).

Looking forward to watching these. I hope Sam Dunn makes it on the ship, met him after I went to a lecture that he did about metal at the University here a few years back and really nice guy. Would be interesting to hear his take on the cruise experience.

So after watching the New Wave of British heavy Metal episode, it's too bad they couldn't spend more time with some of the other bands, but with these episode constraints, it makes me very interested in the prospect of a DVD collection. Expanded episodes, behind the scenes, out-takes, etc. Someone really savvy would try to make a Soundtrack as well, that covers all the genres. Something like 1 CD for each episode.

Now the pain of sitting through the Glam episode. At least Sam Dunn started it off perfect, "Growing up, the one style of metal I couldn't stand was glam metal, hair metal, pop metal, whatever you want to call it. To me the style didn't have the power and aggression I loved about metal music and the bands seem like boy bands put together by music execs just to sell records." Looking forward to the Thrash episode gets me through it.

As soon as the Thrash episode started, I found myself banging my head to the music, instead of listening to Sam. I actually watched this the first time with my sister. She laughs at a bunch of things Sam Dunn says because he reminds her of me. Especially the love of Iron Maiden, comments about Glam, and the "betrayal" by Metallica. My sister loves all things Metal, except the music.

I have more notes, but I'll just touch a couple of highlights. Dave Mustaine definitely was not holding back on some opinions. Lars never mentions Cliff when talking about moving to San Fran. Lars just makes me roll my eyes. Aside from his arrogance, does he not see the irony in talking about how great tape trading was, that it MADE Metallica, but then has his Napster episode?

Now we have 2 very painful weeks of Grunge (not Metal) and Nu-metal (metal in name only).

I know. This drives me nuts as well. You get so hopeful, think "wow, I might be in store for a really good conversation!" then no. You just have to smile, nod and say "that's nice"

Its ridiculous how many occasions I've had where a friend has tried to set me up with a guy saying "yeah he's big into metal and likes a lot of the same things you do, you'll definitely hit off and really like him!". Last time this happened the guy told me that one of his favorite bands is Suicide Silence. The time before that a guy tried to ARGUE with me that Nu-metal was better than Death metal and that he was a huge thrash fan because who didn't like Limp Bizkit back in the day?

I hate people some times

I've watched the first 2 episodes of Metal Evolution and can't wait for more to hit OnDemand. Unlike EvilDan, though, I will enjoy the glam metal episode. I also recently watched Sam Dunn's 'Beyond the Lighted Stage', which was fucking awesome- a great watch for a Rush lover like myself.

I loved the glam episode!! The music was is much fun!! All about partying and having a good time. I'm so glad I got to hit the Sunset Strip once back in the 80's. It was awesome.

The thrash episode was excellent as well.

I watched the grunge episode this morning, gritting my teeth the entire time. Grunge is not metal, you know how I hate it. It was interesting, though, that even Sam questioned himself by including it. I thought it was blasphemy they mentioned Metal Church at the end. They should have been on the thrash episode.

She actually dressed up as me last Halloween. It was pretty amusing.

So i finally watched the Grunge episode of Metal Evolution. Wasn't looking forward to it, but it was better than I expected. Some thoughts.

I do love that they bash the same things (glam), but I don't like how they saw that as ALL Metal.

Deena Weinstein saying "Pain in his voice that Metal doesn't have. It goes along with their theme's of... I'm hurting." is spot on. It's why I don't care for grunge. And it's my same bitch with emo. It's just not Metal. No matter how loud your guitars are, or how much your singer screams. My sister had a really good soundbite summation. It's Anger (Metal) vs. Angst (grunge).

I had to laugh at "Grunge is more intelligent." Really? I think that proves my case on your ignorance.

During That Metal Show, I loved when they iso'd Paul Rodgers because he just didn't understand John 5's solos. He just didn't get it. At all.

What I've gotten out of Metal Evolution so far is that no matter how much I hate a style of music, or see certain bands as being generic or knock-offs or corporately-driven, the bands themselves seem genuinely into what they are doing. And they really don't have much of a reason to say otherwise. Their albums sell. They sell-out shows. Why listen to a couple of haters that say "they're not metal" or "they sold out"?

Also, here are the song lists for the other episodes.
Episode 3 - Early Metal - UK
Episode 4 - New Wave of British Heavy Metal
Episode 5 - Glam
Episode 6 - Thrash
Episode 7 - Grunge
Episode 8 - Nu-metal
Never take anything I say seriously.

His sister sounds like a living embodiment of the principle of Slipknot.

Watched Richard Pryor on Sunset strip from like 82 on STreaming netflix, funny thing is when the camera was "zooming" down sunset strip it went past a club with the marquee that read "Tonight: Cirith Ungol" and some other bands I couldn't read since the lettering was smaller.

So I got caught up with the Shock Rock and Power Metal episodes. My sister is cracking me up with her comments. When she was watching the Power Metal episode, she couldn't really understand the point. "It's like they neutered everything that made it metal." So she has decided that Power Metal doesn't fit, and she's going to call it Ponycorn Metal.

As far as I know, she's oblivious to the discussions on this broad.
