I just kept making iron daggers since its 1 iron and leather strap per dagger. Id go to all of the towns I had, buy all of the mats, make what I could, putz around until they restocked...rinse wash and repeat. I didnt mind that it took a little while since I cant find the materials for anything higher than glass items at my level haha.

Yeah, I think doing side stuff and lvling crafts n' what not first then saving the main quest lines for last is the way to do this. Tough to run around without all the different shouts I guess but I just think the dragon fights and best battles will be way cooler at higher levels than at the earlier levels where I did them.

No, these games are typically designed as a main quest first approach. Small spoiler...If you go into the final fight any higher than level 26 than you are going to be disappointed with how easy it is.

Yeah, I think the way the levelling is, it's most difficult at 20. That's how it was in Oblivion. If I decide to do it again I'll go into that final part around 19. Nevertheless, Skyrim was the glitchiest game of 2011.

Holy hell its so damn glitchy. I save CONSTANTLY for how pissed off I get when it completely freezes for me and have to restart my PS3. It will be hard to get much play time leading up to the cruise so I'm looking forward to a couple days off to clock a bit of time on it after the cruise. Perhaps after then I'll post my current stats although they are probably pretty low in comparison since I didn't start until a bit after Christmas.

Apparently the PS3 version is even glitchier because there is a problem with the fps going through the roof and causes it to freeze. I think there's a fix for it, look it up online. Even then though the gameplay is glitchy.

Finally started Skyrim. Didn't get very far, as I'm having some difficulty focusing. And I'm playing in a strange way that I've never tried before, so we'll see what happens.

I may have questions for people, once I figure out what I'm trying to do.

Screw Enchanting or Alchemy. Max out Smithing (its super easy to do and will clock you a couple levels in the process). Work on either two handed/one handed skill. I'm just short of maxing out Sneaking, Speech and Lockpicking (lock picking has some awesome perks, like better treasure when searching chests).

For whatever reason, it always takes me a long time to figure out how to play these games, and I'm trying something completely different than what I normally do. I think it's because the game is so massive, there are so many things I can do, just trying to figure out what to do next. I usually try to do side missions first before main quests, but I can already tell, I need to get more main quests in to figure out how I'm going to go about things. I'm only about 10 hours in, and I just killed the dragon in Whiterun. So I guess I need to go see the Greybeards.

Marlo, you mentioned focusing on Lockpicking, which I normally put a lot of time and points into, but this game works differently than most. I would assume that I want to buy every lockpick I find (this seems to apply to all Bethesda games), while I normally never buy anything, since I can usually find it for free in a dungeon. While not a fan of grinding, any recommendations?

I figure the Destruction and Restoration will come naturally. I'm using Destruction/Restoration with my left, and one-handed weapons with my right. Seems to give a decent combo of long-range and short-range attacks. Of course, I can't block, but I rarely do that. I'm usually just a tank.

Everyone - While I'm going to review the posts here, how have y'all been playing? Any lessons you care to share? I still feel a bit overwhelmed, and I trust people who actually play for fun more than people that play to make guides. (Being a perfectionist and completist is not a good combination here.) ;)

To be honest, even though I completed magic focused quests like the College of Winterhold to become Arch-Mage, I got through most of those quests without magic. I'm a "slice n dice" kinda girl game style wise. Its more fun to me to pretend my Nord, is well a Nord (viking). That's me however, many of you probably enjoy playing using magic instead. The skills that you intend to develop Dan should reflect the type of game style that you want to play. Start off with whatever you prefer and then fill in the blanks later. I had the exact same problem you do, when I play games I hate to miss a single item/accomplishment/side quest which is a large part of the charm to the game altogether for people like us.

As for lock picking, you could get through ten or more treasure chests with one lock pick. Just nice to have back ups when you need them. You probably won't have to buy them often, usually find them on bandits etc all the time and quite often in chests. I usually keep between 100-130 on me at all times just in case. As for leveling, when you go through dungeons or homes of NPCs open up the books as if to read them, many occasions you will gain a skill point for something like archery or speech etc. You can also pay different people you meet in the game to train you in a skill, the cost is determined by the current level of said skill. You will probably already have noticed that you also level your skills just by using them, this is why Smithing is so easy to rack up. The last way I can think of off the top of my head is that some of the quests I have done I was awarded with additional skill points rather than gold or tokens. I recommend hitting up the Bards College, which I *think* is in Solitude.

Worry about racking up your character later, just enjoy it :beerwink:

Thanks. I knew most of what you mentioned, but the way you worded it helps. At this time, I think my lockpicking is too low, as I can break 3-4 lockpicks trying to unlock Apprentice level locks. In every other Bethesda game (Fallout 3, Oblivion, etc.), I've always been really good with the lockpicking. This game seems far more sensitive. (I'm sure there's a quest with an unbreakable lockpick, like there was in Oblivion, but I'm sure I have to get much further along to survive it.)

Right now, I'm going to focus on getting some more gold so that I can buy a house and start hoarding. (Not sure if some items I left in an out-of-the-way barrel are still there.)

Once you get your lockpicking to level 100 there is a perk you can get where your lock picks never break :D

(Not sure if some items I left in an out-of-the-way barrel are still there.)

there is also a thieves guild quest that gets you the Skeleton Key which is an artifact lvl key that is also unbreakable. (spoilers)you cannot become the head of the guild if you do not turn in said key

I like titles. I went for Guild Master and never actually used the Skeleton Key

I'm taking a break from Skyrim to play Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning. Beautiful setting, pretty solid story so far, but the high point for me is the combat. More action oriented and "arcade"-y a la "God of War" or "Assassins Creed"

When I last played, I was a Breton pure mage, specializing in Destruction and Enchanting. Since I only rely on my enchanted dagger when out of magika, I rarely get treated to the cool finishers a warrior class can enjoy, but it is still satisfying to send enemies flying with dual blasts of lightning. Also, did anyone else try dual casting in third person and going "HADOUKEN!"?

My character is also an excellent dragon slayer. Lightning travels faster than arrows do, and with the "Impact" perk, I can interrupt the dragon by staggering him whenever he's about use a breath attack. In addition, being a breton, I can take a lot of punishment from a dragon, provided I don't move within biting range.

Another must for a pure mage it the Wabbajak from the Sheogorath quest. Whenever I encounter a centurion or anything else that can withstand magic, I just use the Wabbajak to turn it into something else.

YES!!

I would also sometimes knock them down and say "and now young jedi...you will die" and then finish them with lightning.

You have to enjoy the little things in life.
