Ouch! $6000.00. :bitch:
On the bright side 75% of all sewer piping and water lines in this country are failing and are 100 years old. I did not know that your piping was ceramic, (those lines break very easy and often as they age) most old lines in MN are cast iron. Newer lines are PVC. Tree roots get into everything. It is really amazing what plant roots can do to things.

For Kate, newer home construction in the US is done cheap, shotty, and often bad, plus sold for way too much $$$$$. Older homes have their share of problems but were often built better/stronger. Home construction materials used very greatly depending on the area of the US where the homes are built. There was a time in your area of the US that all homes were made from cinder blocks/concrete due to the desert.

Agree with Laura, home ownership really is the best thing if one can get into a home. Buying a home in the US has become a nightmare for most people and a lot of people can’t afford a home. I had built my parent’s house and finally have gotten into a house of my very own. Seven houses from where I grew up. It’s a MN thing. I am the last person who thought that I would wind up back in the old neighborhood which now at times can be called the hood.

Here sewage pipes used to be cast iron inside houses and ceramic or concrete pipes outside (from the building to the central line). Nowadays (after mid-70's) all sewage pipes are PVC (or stainless steel for special installations). And yes, the old pipes have their problems, but I'd think that the ceramic pipes are relatively cheap to renew as it's pretty much just digging up the yard and replacing the pipes.

I too built my own house six years ago in my hometown. I still have it even if I live in Southern Finland now. I'm planning on selling the house maybe this summer or autumn, but we'll see. Here in Espoo (and Helsinki and the surroundings) houses cost way too much. When you can get a relatively new house (like mine) in Central Finland in a smaller town for, say, 250,000 euros, the same house near Helsinki costs at least 500,000 euros!

yeah inside my basement the pipes are cast iron and pvc here and there where the old 117 year old ones rusted...and ceramic outside i guess, and the ceramic pipe is broke at every single junction! much of the cost is going to be the labor for the digging, and Colorado ground is hard and clay and rocky so i'm not doing that, that's for sure.

i remember you talking about building your house, that's awesome, would someone use it as a 2nd home maybe?

500,000 Euros! holy hell, you'd have to be quite wealthy to buy a home in helsinki!

Well, my house is currently serving as a sort of summer cabin for me plus my nephew and his band are practicing in the downstairs living room. I'm sure the neighbors appreciate it.

My mom is selling her house atm, and if and when she has sold it she'll move in my house, just for a little while until she's decided whether she wants to live in Äänekoski or Helsinki. After that I'm selling it; costs around 200 euros a month for property taxes, district heating, electricity, water and insurance, so if I visit Äänekoski once a month, it would be cheaper to stay in a hotel. :beerwink:
Plus I'd make something like 150,000 euros profit selling the house.

Well, my parents used to own a construction company, so my dad really knew how to get good deals on building materials etc. And we did most of the work ourselves, so I didn't have to pay anyone to do the work. The house ended up costing me a bit over 80,000 euros and that kind of houses go for 230,000-250,000 in Äänekoski. So I'll get a huge profit even if I don't go for a really high price.

Houses in Tucson (I'm actually in Oro Valley, which is a newer "city") are concrete. I'm leaning more towards building my own home, ala Memnoch

Not enough sleep plus a 12 hour work day plus being very hungry = very bad singing lesson

Also, it's fucking annoying to have a US bought laptop, set to Spanish keyboard to be able to have the Ñ ñ and accents, but then the keys not matching up to the pictures on them. Can't find the plus sign for the life of me

Interesting to read about other people's living situations/houses in other parts of the US and in Finland in Memnoch's case. Michael - I liked your comment "It's a MN thing." We don't live on the same block we grew up, but feel so grounded and rooted in Chicagoland/the midwest having grown up here and all our family near by, that we never really seriously entertained the idea of living anywhere else. We really love the city too - the architecture, the lakefront, the museums, and so many things to do. If we didn't live in the city itself, I probably would not be going to many or as many metal shows and the like. Most of the venues are a short bus, train, or cab ride away, and some are even within 5-10 minute walking distance. The really close ones don't have many metal gigs, but when they do (as in the case of Corey Taylor, Kvelertak, and Satyricon in the past few years), I love that. So, if I feel like seeing a show for example on a weeknight, I'm generally not gone for many hours, which is not a big deal considering work, family, and all that good stuff. ;) The only venue that is a bit of pain to get to is Reggie's because it is located many blocks south of the downtown "Loop."

Back to the house discussion - I don't agree that all new construction in the US is necessarily crappy. Ours is a wood frame house, and we watched it being built in the summer of 1992. We were/are satisfied enough with it (husband is an architect/general contractor), and the price was certainly right. When we put a 22 foot, 2 story addition (family room first floor, expanded master bedroom/bath second floor) on the back of the house about 8 years ago, we had all new siding put on the entire house, had all the windows replaced with better quality ones (rather than trying to match the siding & windows of the new addition to the original part of the house), replaced the first floor carpeting with wood floors, and completely gutted and re-did the kitchen and the downstairs bathroom (we couldn't afford the wood floors and our "dream kitchen" back in 1992). The main reason the house was so inexpensive back in 1992 was that the developer had bought several empty lots on our street for only $5,000 a piece because the neighborhood was still so gang infested....so, we weren't paying some super inflated price because of land value. Now, that ours is a "hot" neighborhood, a really crappy 120 year old run down eyesore of a house next to us sold for $200,000 as a teardown (insane? yes!) about 5 years ago, and a young couple (early 30s) built a $1,000,000 house there.

Now, that ours is a "hot" neighborhood, a really crappy 120 year old run down eyesore of a house next to us sold for $200,000 as a teardown (insane? yes!) about 5 years ago, and a young couple (early 30s) built a $1,000,000 house there.

your house sounds awesome laura! and glad your gamble on that neighborhood paid off so well!

My mom who is 89 , almost 90, collapsed in the kitchen early last night, I found her gurgling and convulsing and then not moving and shallow breathing. I called 911 and it took them what seemed like HOURS to get there. Her heart is not functioning properly. Low heart rate and low oxygen levels. She is in the hospital and having a pacemaker surgically put in in a few hours.

I am scared shitless right now, feel like I am alone in this.

Please think of my family and I (Just my mom and I) today.

We both need it.

Thanks,

Scott

Wow, Hugs ! Thank you all !!! You guys rock and are the bestest. :)

She had the pacemaker put in this morning and they also went through the main artery in her thigh to explore her coronary arteries, etc to see what or if they could see what caused her heart problem and the procedure showed no signs of heart disease, no blocked valves or heart attack signs. Her head scan (CT) and chest scan both came back normal and good. She is not out of the woods yet. I came home and cleaned the apt. And my friend Michele is taking me out for a drink soon and then I am going back up to visit my mom.

I did not sleep a wink last night. And did not eat until 1 pm today (nothing last night).

Real scary to think what would have happened had I not been home !!!!

Thanks for the well wishes, and I will pass them along to my Mother.

Trying to remain positive and calm. Yesterday was a clusterfuck. I could not stop shaking/tremors... so much fear when you hear your 89 year old mother hit the floor like that. I thought for sure she was dead.

google is your friend :D

Either google up an image of the keybroad you need

or google "plus sign" and then copy/paste

I've been at fucked up keybroads too over the years (yes you with a French keybroad, you confuse me!)
