Silmarilion

kudos to you. I recently started lord of the rings again, because this was too boring for me some years ago and Silmarilion is even worse.. ;) I think I won't even try to read it.... It's not that interesting for me although I like lord the rings somehow... I think it's easier to read if you know the movies, because all the different names are confusing.

At the moment I'm reading Mort of Terry Pratchett. I think he's a great author, he writes in such a funny way!

I finished "Lost Japan". Really interesting read. My favorite part was the metaphor for Japan, saying, "Japan is like an oyster. It does not like foreign entities getting inside it. Whenever a spec of sand or a piece of shell gets inside it, the oyster finds its presence intolerable and continuously coats it until it becomes a pretty pearl. Pearl is more pretty and refined than the original object, but all traces of what it used to be and its place of origin are gone." Essentially, Japan is just as guilty (if not moreso) of Japanizing things as the US is of Americanizing things.

Anyway, I've moved on to a history book called "Samurai: Code of the Warrior". Unlike the previous book, which was full of interpretations and observations, this one is purely historical and is painted in very broad strokes, leaving me with more questions than answers, like "Why did they have that war?" or "Why did he become the new shogun?" It constantly tells of events without explaining how they came to pass. New chapters begin with wars whose causes were never explained. Essentially, it is a giant timeline without the details that give life to the history. Luckily, it's short and I'm sure I'll find a more detailed book once I'm finished with this one.

not the funniest book ever (like it's written on the back of the book), but nice to read

I have to admit that I haven't finished Silmarillion when I started reading it more than a decade ago

I'm not actually reading this atm myself, but thought to post this here for everyone interested. Timo Tolkki (ex-Stratovarius) posted the link on Imperiumi.net's forum today. It's his book and what I quickly skimmed through, seems really personal. He talks about his mental illness and the death of his father and such events in his life.

Beautiful title. I just read the beginning and it's quite touching.

A few books that I’ve recently enjoyed are:

especially fantastic book - learned so much I didn't know about one of my favorite bamds, their peers in the 70s, and the many musicians they influenced.
Image

food for thought when I retire in 8-10 years
Image

Sometimes can be awkward of course, but we are having more of these kinds of conversations with our age 13 & 14 years old girls. ;) This book has a lot of good advice in my view....including discussing topics like depiction of sexuality in various media like movies, TV, music, & the internet.
Image

One of my very favorite authors – he can be kinda out there sometimes, but for the most part, I love his way of thinking. Was thrilled to see him give a lecture last year and meet him afterward!
Image

And a book review I read of this caught my interest, so I put it on reserve at the library (so haven’t read it yet) – the library has lots of copies but they are all checked out! It has a somewhat scandalous sounding title, but it seems a couple of the main themes covered include the ideas of maintaining independence and a fair amount of personal freedom within marriage – I’m certainly a big believer in this. :P

Everyone always says that about books vs. movies. I haven't heard anyone say that they liked the movies better than the books except MAYBE lord of the rings, but even then I guarantee people will be dissatisfied with the hobbit. I'm kinda glad I don't read much cus I thought that movie was awesome. I haven't seen the Swedish one but everyone tells me the American one was way better. Have you seen that one?

I do agree that the LoTR movies were better than the books, because I started at the wrong direction. Movies first then trying to read the books, didnt work out so well, so nowdays I always read the book first then see the movie. Not the other way around its just bad=)

I would love to recommend a book or two though.... Metro 2033 and Metro 2034 by the russian author Dmitry A. Glukhovsky. By far the best books I´ve read. Even better than Robert Ludlums Identity Kain, Operation Hong Kong etc.... Well I bet you better now the books as The Jason Bournes franchise. But check out Metro 2033 its well worth it. And then play the PC game =)

No way taht the movie was better than the book for LotR!

All books from Thomas Harris in regards to Hannibal's character have been better as movies though imho, maybe especially so "silence of the lambs"

I only read Hannibal, but I liked the book more. Though I would imagine Silence of the Lambs would be a close match. That movie is awesome!

I usually prefer to see the movie first, since odds are the book is better, so reading the book before will only make me compare everything during the movie

I find TH way of writing a book is more like a script for a movie anyways, he puts in soo much deatils of stuff that you're not really interested in when it comes to a book, for example exactly what type of gun and holster (right word?) someone is using. Sure he does his proper research it seems, but I don't want to read every little detail like that in a book.

Makes for very good movies though.

Definitely got that impression while reading The Silence of the Lambs

It's a bit too much the author's own opinion on what bands were good or not though, but the interviews with ppl that grew up around then are interesting.

it's tough to keep out your opinions nor should a write have to, but i can see that getting kind of annoying especially if i didn't agree! i'd be like blah bi blah bi blah what do you know beotch?

Did anyone read The Hunger Games? I just saw it and didn't really like it but the book might have been alright.

So is it not worth watching if you haven't read the book?

Well general rule it's probably less worth watching if you have. I don't know. If you have nothing better to do go see it but there were a few things I just didn't like about it. The main actress in it has chronic bitchface.
