This book has caused some controversy in the library world....going back to the age-old question of what is "appropriate" to stock in a public library/what tax money is spent on. I finally decided to read the damn thing after seeing it mentioned in so many places. (for the record, I thought it was just ok....I've read better of that ilk) I don't really want to get into a huge discussion of the sexual politics of a book like that and why I think it's so popular (actually there are 3 and they've sold millions!!!)...but I do think it's odd and random that a waitress would recommend it to you. For one, I suspect that 99% of the (intended) audience of this trilogy is female. Maybe she wanted to shock or impress you that she liked something oh so scandalous! -or- ....she thought you needed some BDSM fantasy and/or reality in your life. :P

I'm willing to Bet that not many libraries have Santa Steps Out by Robert Devereaux... people have a hard time with Santa, Mrs Clause, The Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy, elves, raindeer, Greek mythology, and sexuality all bundled up into a well written page turner (took 12 years for a publisher to have the cajones to publish it!)

Oh darn - the library where I work doesn't own that (just when I thought we had *everything* :P  ...but checked the version of World Cat(alog) we subscribe to at work this morning and over 30 libraries are listed as having it. Here is the public version of World Cat and the record for that book (sounds intriguing by the way).

It was telling a 'conservative watchdog group' that keeps butting in every time a specific city tries to make a decision and threatening to sue for really dumb reasons to stay out and let elected officials do their job.

Hmmm - just wondering - are forums like this just gonna kinda "die on the vine" since so many people seem to prefer to communicate on facebook?

I don't like the facebook groups much. All the threads are so freaking hard to follow up on with a million posts and they're more like chat conversations than proper discussions like in here. The longer answers here are usually well written and well thought, unlike on fb.

Agree - I tend to be on here more than fb for that reason. I guess it boils down to how one likes to communicate. On a related note... and please excuse the fact that this is gonna sound all grandma (back in the good old days  ) and shit - but there are times when I seriously reminisce positively about a time when communication consisted of simply phone, letter, and most importantly and foremost face to face. I read an article lately that posited the thought that social media like fb is actually making people more "lonely." It was quite extraordinary and surprising to read in a way, yet I think I agree on many levels.

Whatever all this rampant communication means in the long run for society in general, I really don't know. What I have found to be true however on a personal level, is that it is addicting (not *necessarily* in a bad way) ;) , I need to tune out from it every so often, and my immediate surroundings (people, places, and such) should always take priority over anything "out there" (in Internet land).

I've had internet connection since the early nineties, so I guess I can call myself an old-school web user. Never got into chats and IM networks (well, used M$ Messenger for a while in Jyväskylä, because all my friends were using it and they had the voice chat so it was the cheapest way to call someone).
I like to think my answers through carefully, both in Finnish and English, to get the message through. Before this forum I hardly ever used any emoticons because I think that people should try and grasp irony and sarcasm without them.

Aah, yes, I'm a grammar nazi too. I just hate it when people don't read what they write. Obviously I do make some grammar mistakes too when writing in English, but I guess that's understandable. With Finnish I like to think that my grammar is 99,9% correct. :ugeek:

The whole language looks like a collection of typos and grammar mistakes

Social media has certainly changed the way people interact. I was in college when Facebook hit, and it vastly changed the way people interact and what people thought of as friendships. I hated what it did, which is one of the many reasons I hate Facebook. I hope people don't just rely on Facebook (or whatever the next social media craze will be) for communication. This forum has been really dead for a while now and I'm hoping now that we have announcements some people will come back to it. I don't want this to die out.

Well, it is often described as the most difficult language in the world, and with it having no relation to the Indo-European languages most of the words might look strange.
Here's a bit of the grammar that is quite difficult - even for us:

Personally I like this forum better than Facebook when it comes to communicating/keeping in touch with cruisers. Despite how often things go off topic, it's still a lot easier to figure out what people are talking about on here. I don't even bother with the facebook groups.

Yeah, that's why I hardly bother with the FB group. Way too much going on.
