How did I totally miss this announcement? No e-mail from team. No alert on my phone. WTF? Thanks for the news Chris!! I was really afraid they may be forced to stick with Luongo only despite the obvious reasons not to. Gonna have to research a bit later on to see how they managed to do this.

was posted on NHL.com at about 8:30 last night as a tweet from Mike Gillis. here's a copy paste of the whole article

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said Thursday via Twitter (@GMMikeGillis) that Vancouver has reached an agreement in principle on a new deal with goaltender Cory Schneider.

"We have agreed in principle to a deal with Cory Schneider. More news in the next few days," Gillies tweeted. Schneider was scheduled to become a restricted free agent on Sunday.

Multiple media reports, including ESPN and TSN, say the contract is worth $12 million for three years.

The 26-year-old was 20-8-1 for the Canucks this past season with a 1.96 goals-against average and a save percentage of .937. He replaced starter Roberto Luongo for Vancouver's last three playoff games and went 1-2 despite allowing only four goals.

Schneider has spent the past two seasons backing up Luongo, going 36-12-3. He earned $900,000 in 2011-12. For his career, he's 38-17-4 with a 2.24 GAA and .928 save percentage. Schneider was the Canucks' first-round pick (No. 26) in the 2004 NHL Draft.

Luongo, the Canucks' starter since being acquired in 2006, has 10 more seasons remaining on a contract that carries a $5,333,333 cap hit through 2021-22.

So, what do you guys think of the draft? Third first pick in a row I think for Edmonton and a third forward.

I was also reading around the net Zach Parise is leaving Devils. Does he already have a prefered team or is he open for negotiations with anyone willing to dish out enough money?

I think he said anywhere but New York

Pretty happy with my team's first round draft pick, Malcolm Subban. Young, athletic goaltender with some good upside. His brother happens to be the Boston fans' least favorite player from their least favorite team.

Malcolm, even if he progresses well, probably wouldn't even sniff the big club for a few years but worth keeping an eye on as he grows.

I don't know about the late round picks, though one of them is a local boy, which would be great if he can ever make it to the NHL. Another one had a really good year in the OHL, so we'll see what happens there too.

So Preds have locked up Gill which says to me that Suter is gone as of July 1. I'm guessing the Preds will give Weber whatever he wants but looks like the dream pairing are getting broken up. I really wish him the best though as he's such a good player and sportsman and really has been overshadowed by Shea. Radulov is gone too thank fuck, good riddance, try not to let the door slam on your face on the way out blah blah blah.....

For the 'Yotes the main concern now is that Shane Doan will be an UFA as of July 1st. He says he wants to sign with Phoenix but wants the ownwership issue resolved first. Don't blame him, it's such a mess

That's how Dallas lost Brad Richards. So prepare to say goodbye.

Dallas is supposedly going after Parise, and while it would be great, I see it as a longshot.

There are rumors LA wants Parise, I don't know how well they're doing with their Cap, they just signed Quick for 10 years and most likely nobody is leaving.

Interesting to see Dallas pick up Whitney at his age. Didn't think he really fit with how Joe is building the team, especially at that price. Don't know much about Rome (D - Vancouver). Glad to see they at least made sizable offers to Suter and Parise, but they are going in a different direction.

Kate, in Dallas, we knew who the owner was going to be, had known for months, and he was in the final stages of being vetted, which took several months (far too long). (It was completed 1 month into the season.) So even with Richards public desire to stay in Dallas, if the ownership stuff clears up, NHL permission to spend the money to keep him, it just wasn't going to happen. If I understand correctly, Phoenix isn't as close to ownership, and unless it's resolved this week, he'll go elsewhere. Whitney had an interesting perspective on this, if you can find his conference call. There was some thought that Doan might come to Dallas, but again, I think his age doesn't fit, regardless of sharing ownership of the minor league team.

Mild surprise trading fan favorite Steve Ott (and spare Pardy) to Buffalo for Derek Roy, who thankfully pronounces his name correctly, unlike some douchebag goaler.

Ott's been super popular here, but at the same age, Roy obviously fits better, since we need centers, and he's been far more productive. We'll lose that "agitation", but I guess that explains why we signed a guy with a ton of PIMs and no goals.

Glad to see Broduer stay in NJ. Would have been just weird if he was playing with Chicago or something. (Toronto never had a chance.)

So NJ signs Brodeur, Salvador, and Hedberg, with eyes still set on Parise.

However, as I did last year with Vancouver, I will predict that NJ will get booted in the 1st round, IF they make the playoffs. Losers of the Stanley Cup Final rarely do well the following year.

Not to mention Brett MacLean being flown to the hospital after a cardiac emergency. Hope he recovers fully.

I was a little confused at first with the signing of Jagr, as the Stars still need a ton of help on D, but Benn, Ericksson, Whitney, Ryder, Roy, Jagr.... pretty solid top 6 forwards. We should definitely improve our scoring and power play. :beerbang:

well considering he is already talking about Vancouver in the past tense in interviews i think the writing is on the wall for him. i will say i will miss him hes an amazing goalie if he can avoid the mental game. get inside his head though and i have a better chance of stopping a puck than him :P

I expect a lowball offer to start off negotiations but wow. The NHL went a little overbroad on that one. We'll see what happens once serious offers are brought into it.

Whoa! Philly's pretty ballsy trying to ink Weber for 14 years. I really don't get why NHL GMs continue to sign players to such long contracts. I wonder how front loaded that one is. Would be surprised if Nashville can or wants to match. Would really suck for them to lose him and Suter but from what I'm reading they'd get four early round draft picks as compensation for Weber.

Not only the long contract, but it looks like they are trying to structure it so that Weber makes $26M the first year (max signing bonus day he signs and another a year later).

As a fan, I like the idea of long-term contracts, if I like the player; however, as a business person, and watching the full career of some amazing players, and some amazing players that have had their careers cut short for whatever reason, and on-and-on, I don't like the idea of being tied to player far beyond the normal superstar career spans. If I ran things, I would tend to do things in 4-year or less contracts. MAYBE in extreme circumstances, I might go 5- or 6-year for someone like the Stars did for Modano, which allowed them the flexibility to let him go to detroit when he wasn't the elite player he used to be.
Never take anything I say seriously.

The Bruins gave Zdeno Chara a 7 year extension not too long ago (2010 or 2011) and I thought that might have been a bit much. It's just too hard to predict a player's "worth" that far in advance. A sudden loss of ability or an injury can really hurt a franchise stuck with a long term contract. I agree with your normal operating length of 4 years with exceptions for special players. If Parise and Suter have problems in Minnesota, that franchise is stuck with and over $15 cap hit just for them during the length of those contracts. Stupid GMs.

I'm seeing, depending on how the signing bonuses are factored into the offer from Philly, that the Flyers may have to surrender 4 1st round picks for Weber.

Didn't Devils try to pull the same thing with Kovalchuk two years ago? If I remember correctly, they had to redo the contract because Kovalchuk would get most money in the first few years.

Yup. Wouldn't be surprised if the league took a look at it. I also wouldn't be surprised if there is some kind of protection from these types of contracts in the next CBA. Heavily front loaded contracts like that are cheap ways to gain a signing advantage over small market teams. I would hope the small market owners would be putting pressure on a change there.
