So, I have no interest in bitching (again, kidding or not) about how this or that band or genre sucks, or farting or god knows what else. Sorry, but it's just not my thing or my interest.

And that's your prerogative but it's something that will always be a part of public Internet forums, whether you like it or not. It's the Internet, we kinda get a bit of every thing. ^That's the way people should act, don't take everything so damn seriously.

I know I've made a lot of fun about power metal weenies and The Unicorn Overlord in particular, but it's all in good fun. I wouldn't pick on someone if I noticed they don't like it or just to be mean. I get my fair share of jokes about my liking in girlie bands, but I don't mind it. I don't like any genre because it's cool or I'm "supposed" to like it. I'm pretty open about my favourite genres in metal and other music and mostly I just find it funny how it confuses, and even seems to irritate some, people that I have such a varied taste. Yes, I don't like power metal - I might listen to a song or two every now and then from some bands, like Blind Guardian even. If a friend of mine wants to listen to power metal, fine, I can tolerate it, but I expect them to tolerate, say, technical death metal, because it is my greatest love in metal, in return.
Even my hate for Arkona isn't that strong actually. I don't want to listen to them and don't get why so many people fuss so much about them. I don't like thrash. Most black metal is lost on me. I love The Cardigans. And girlie bands. And the ultra technical death metal. In Kevinish, put that in your pipe and smoke it. :smoking:

Seems to me that it's the same people complaining every year about the lineup. If you only like three bands in the world, why the hell are you even going on a cruise with 40 or 42 bands on it? First time round I only had four bands I really cared about (Arsis, Epica, Malevolent Creation, Twilight of the Gods) onbroad, last time about ten (Atheist, Candlemass, Cannibal Corpse, God dethroned, Massacre, My Dying Bride, Nightwish, Pestilence, Samael, Therion), but for me the lineup was ok on both cruises. For 2013 I already have two wishlist bands on (Nile and Immolation), and will no doubt catch at least one set of Lacuna Coil (maybe both, depending on the running order) and In Flames (if they man up and do a special "oldies" set). I have faith in Andy&co to book some more bands I like for 70k, so I'm not worried. If I won't get any more wishlist bands, it's all good, more time for other things. And who knows, maybe I even end up liking some of the bands I wasn't liking before the cruise.

So, in conclusion, I'm sorry if I've mocked anyone's favourite band. It's only because I have better taste in music than you.

Thanks God, there are people who like different kinds of metal. Some prefer the extreme one, so they will go to the Barge and some other ones prefer other kinds and would prefer the 70K. I would never judge someone for their taste, we are all free to go to one gig and not to some other ones while the cruise.

Actually, there are only 13 bands announced for the 70K, more to come, so, some other bands can attract a lot of fans later in the year. Personally, the 2013 line-up is, for me, very interesting. I can't say that I want to see every bands - I don't know all of them either and as I don't like the extreme metal, I wont to go to see the bands who play that music, for sure -, but I'll be in the Turisas gigs first, then I will see who else while on the ship :headbanger: Thanks of my taste for metal music and my radio show, I discovered a lot of bands I never heard about, so, the cruise is for me a huge opportunity to see several bands I played in my shows and never seen live :wank:

cowboy71 wrote:So, Barge versus 70K *deep breath*

I think the problem is, "extreme metal" (and I use the term broadly) fans are a (VERY) vocal minority.

Every time a Nightwish or a Blind Guardian or a Hammerfall or an Epica (for example) got announce for 2011/12 there was a small group that would whine like babies very vocally on the forum or facebook about how crap an announcement it was, fairy music, unicorn music, their sets would be nap time/food time/masturbate time.

While the people that LIKE this kind of music just chill out, and don't jump up and down for the announcement. NOR do they moan when extreme bands like BurnChurchKillPuppies or ILookKvltInMakeup or whatever gets announced.

And UMC have seen 'ALLLLLL' these crying extreme fans and gone "hmmmm there must be a big market for this - lets give them their own cruise!".

Yet - have a look at the size of the crowds on broad. I think Nightwish and Guardian probably had the biggest crowds both years...

So yeah, maybe if they downsize Barge to an ACTUAL barge it might sell out :P

Otherwise unless they drop prices drastically or announce some bands that are more 'commercial' I reckon it will be 75% full at the most.

*end rant*

And yes, that was a rant, and I've used sweeping generalisations. Fact is, the elitist bullshit of fans of all metal genres shits me to tears :P

And I'm not wishing ill of UMC or Barge - I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong and see it sold out, but I just don't see it happening.

Well known facts and I'm surprised UMC didn't know. Or maybe they did know, but decided to go for it anyway?

Ever heard the saying "many a true word is spoken in jest"?

I guess though I'm just referring to this forum. In general I think it's all friendly jest. Though if people choose to get offended when that clearly isn't the intent, that's kinda their own issue :bangers:

The people that make the anti-power metal jokes genuinely don't like power metal, but they are just doing it to have some fun. I don't see it as a big deal. I think it's kind of funny.

Some people like to joke about it, like on this forum, and that's fine, you can tell when it's all in good fun. But some people are just assholes. A black metal cunt once threatened to stab me because he didn't like the band t-shirt I was wearing. They're the worst type, fuckin' elite "kvlt" black metal bullshit.

My friend/cabinmate was wearing a teal hoodie one night and one serious German fellow came up to him and said "zat shirt is not metal, you are not metal". It provided for some good laughs after so I'm kind of glad it happened.

I like most genres of metal - with Power (goblins and knights), Prog, Thrash, and whatever Maiden falls into. being my far favorites.

I like some bands from Death Metal but not a big fan but the Barge has a good line up and even bands i'd want to see

I hardly take any music seriously at all - especially Power metal. I think theres nothing more fun than attending a show and being in the crowd. If you love death metal that's awesome, it's still a form of metal. IF you like crappy pop music that's fine I'm probably going to make fun of you  and you can make fun of me because you don't like the music i like - it's all in fun.

That being said, I hope the Barge does awesome for all the people that are going on it they deserve as good a time as possible.

70k is much much more for me and i dont really care which one does better as long as they both do good.
So far i think the 70K line up is great - a bunch of my wants already announced and 29 more to go.

Re: How fast will 70K 2013 sell out?

Postby Laura » Fri Jul 13, 2012 8:05 am

Oh, good grief.... :P
Those comments of mine from last night were pretty random - well, at least I started out by saying it was a general blab
I should have known better than to go online after partying it up big-time for several hours at Taste of Chicago last night (was in the 14th row for one of my very favorite non-metal bands Death Cab for Cutie - awesome).

Hmmm.....so where to begin to clarify what I was trying to say? Don't know'!! Ok...

I'm not *personally* into dissing other peoples' tastes, even in a joking way. It's just not me, never was, never will be.

When other people do it, am I offended or *really* dislike it or the people that do it? HECK NO!!! I said last night that I found it really tiresome - which was actually overstated since I usually just ignore it and could really care less. But even the word tiresome is very different than, say, offended. It's more the idea of a joke that just gets kinda stale (in my humble opinion) after being told too many times. And haha - sorry in advance if that comment offends anyone.

Memnoch - I relate to your wide diversity of music taste for sure. I look at my very eclectic tastes in music and art and the like as being a reflection of many different facets of my personality, moods, desires, and so on. I especially love to experience polar opposites very close together as I did recently with seeing Ministry and selections from Orff's Carmina Burana in the same weekend. Another was coming home from 70K this year and seeing violinist Joshua Bell at Orchestra Hall the next day. (where it was so silent in the hall you could hear a pin drop and the music was nothing short of sublime).

Regarding wearing non-metal shirts at metal shows - I think that is really fun actually and it seems silly if anyone gets offended by that. There was a guy at Hole in the Sky with a Ramones shirt on. I got a kick out of that especially since the guy only looked to be about 20 (also I'm a HUGE Ramones fan and saw them more than 30 years ago. ). I almost wore my Eminem shirt I bought at Lollapalooza last year (HUGE Eminem fan as well :P ) on 70K this year, but I decided against it - not cause I'm self-conscious about liking Eminem, but I decided I really don't care for the shirt - - which is basically a HUGE image of his face on the front - which is kinda obnoxious. hmmm....maybe I should wear it on Barge. But no....I bought a killer B-52s shirt at their gig a week ago which I'll take instead.

Another sold-out category, interior K triple. I guess there aren't that many cabins in that category, but a sold-out section is a sold-out section. :beerwink:

Not counting JS and GS, which can be various sizes depending on how you buy them, there can in the case of all other cabins filled to the max limit be 2565 persons in the cabins

Plus from minimum 116 to maximum 182 in the JS + GS

So max number of ppl onbroad in cabins would be 2747

This means since there are suposedly 2,000 fans we can have up to 747 band members with management with them?
Say we have 42 bands and they are all 10 ppl, that's 420.
So 327 press and other VIPs?

Yes, I'm bored

*and with that, statsman turns off his calculator for the last time, and retires*

Just joking!

:D

Your max figure is pretty close - according to wiki there is capacity of 2744 passengers on the Majesty.

Checking at RC page I realized where UMC gets profit from... cabin fares are between two and four times more expensive than a regular cruise
Nice :bangers:

That should help cover the "presumably" massive cost to rent the ship and pay the bands and pay for marketing and pay for techs to set up the stage and pay everyone's salary and whatnot, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Maybe

also I'd say from knowledge and being familiar and having a success story

No matter it's still UMC and it's the same ship leaving from the same place, I think many still think "oh it's the first cruise, it'll never work blah blah blah" just as many did before the first 70k

i think that plays a part too. i personally wouldnt mind being on a half empty ship if it turned out that way

No chance it will be fully booked, even if they sell the last tickets on a discount (but you will never get to know this). But the idea of a metal crusie is now taken up all over. Starting yesterday a "full metal cruise" starting in Hamburg, Germany in 2013 for 7 days (more or less a Dover channel crossing). With Doro and Gamma Ray already confirmed, takes place. :bitch:

70K has already established a name for itself, and as far as I know everyone who's been on it has raved about it. Barge sounded like it would be much heavier than it is so far, so maybe that also scared off a lot of people? Also, time of the year probably has something to do with it, too.
