How many bands can you see each day?

    by 4Horsemen » Tue Dec 11, 2018 4:18 pm

*Apologies if this has already been answered in another thread*

For the Survivors out there - how many bands would you say you could see "comfortably" each day? I'm not trying to over-plan, but just trying to get a sense of what is realistic between meals, set changes, hanging out with other metalheads, etc. I know it will be a little different for everyone, but if you could share your experience that would be great.

Not sure if I have a day break down, but there are differences in how many bands play per day. First day is short, second day is a full day, third day is short (Labadee), then the last day is full.

For me, a comfortable load for the cruise is 28 to 34 shows. That includes getting at least 4 to 6 hours of sleep a day, and on the last day taking in a 2 hour meal. So I guess an average of between 8 and 9 shows a day, some of the repeats. The 1st full sea day is where I take in far more then the average though.

Depends on you. In 2017, I went to 35 shows in the 4 days. Keeping in mind that two of those are half days (Boarding and Destination Day), so averaged out I saw 6, 12, 12, and 6 (In 2017 I actually liked 2 of the 3 headliners, so that's of sets of all lengths as well). For me, seeing 35 shows was pushing it. I had time for actual nothing aside from shows, eating, and resting. If you want to hang out with friends, check out karaoke, try the fancy dining, or any number combination of things, you might go for less. I'd say planning for 30, give or take, is my ideal. That way I can see a lot of good bands and have some time to relax on my vacation.

These were, in almost every case, 35 FULL sets, as well. If you are the type of person to hop between sets and bands, or you don't need to see a whole set, that'll increase your capacity. If you don't plan on sleeping much, that'll change your capacity as well, because I need my rest when I'm standing in a pit all day.

I know people who go to 15 sets and party a lot - I know someone whose record is 60 shows. I know someone who walked off the boat looking like garbage but hit up 100 shows. So you can play it however you want.

I've seen between 32 and 40 shows each time, depending on how curious I was (if I don't like a band, I leave after 10mn, but still count it as seen). Last year it was 35.
    This includes the All-Star Jam.
So in average 35 shows is a full dance card, leaving little time for other things than eating and sleeping.

What everyone here said. I think 30-35 full sets is the ideal when you also want to hang out with friends and do other boat things like chill in a hot tub, pub, casino, karaoke, or play mini golf, eat a fancy meal, etc.

I consider myself as having seen a set/band if I've caught at least three songs, but honestly, I mostly know who I'm walking into and almost always catch full sets. In 2016, I hit up 45 sets; I mostly attribute having been to that high a number because of it being my first year and not knowing a ton of people - because I'm a really social guy. I was also blackout drunk for a couple early AM ones that I have photos of me at and don't remember, oops. I got very little sleep but I did feel like I saw far more than enough sets and missed out of the rest of the boat a bit. In 2017 I hit 36 sets and felt a lot better about that range; got to hang out with friends and didn't feel pressured to catch more. Last year, I hit 29 sets, but was very social and into all kinds of stuff the boat has to offer compared to the first two years. I feel very good about that range. 30-35 is indeed probably the ideal to me, where I'm getting a sustainable amount of sleep, not feeling rushed, hitting a lot of sets, and being very social and doing other things the boat has to offer.

I'll echo the above - I've done as few as 28 sets and as many as 34 - but anything meaningfully above that means you're sacrificing sleep, meet & greets, hygiene, a little relaxation, socializing, and food.

Bands play 50mn in average, so you should budget 30 hours for pure shows over the 4 days.
Day 1: 13 possible hours for shows (5pm to 6am)
    Day 2: 20 (10am to 6am)
    Day 3: 13 (5pm to 6am)
    Day 4: 16 (10am to 2am)
Total: about 60 hours max, if jumping from stage to stage for up to 20 hours is your thing.

Edit: I forgot to factor in the All Star Jam, but it shouldn’t change the conclusion much, since it’s a one-time event.

    So:
    Day 1: 6h of shows
    Day 2: 10h
    Day 3: 6h
    Day 4: 8h

Here's a sample itinerary - in reality, probably 25% of the time marked as 'shows' would be time in which no bands you wanted to see are playing, random trips to the Windjammer in the middle of the night, or just time spent on socializing, hanging out at the bars, and enjoying the boat:

Thursday: Shows 5 - 7 PM, dinner 7 PM - 8 PM, shows 8 PM - Midnight, sleep (6 hours of shows, 6 hours of sleep)
    Friday: Merch / breakfast - 6 - 8 AM, socialize 8 AM - 10 AM, shows 10 AM - noon, lunch & nap noon - 2 PM, meet and greets 2 PM - 4 PM, shows 4 PM - 8 PM, dinner 8 PM - 9 PM, shows 9 PM - 4 AM (13 hours of shows, 7 hours of sleep)
    Saturday: Breakfast, Island & relaxation 10 AM - 5 PM, shows 5 PM - 8 PM, fancy dinner 8 PM - 9 PM, shows 9 PM - 4 AM (10 hours of shows, 6 hours of sleep)
    Sunday: Shows 10 AM - 1 PM, Belly Flop 1 PM - 2 PM, Jamming w/ Waters 2 PM - 4 PM, shows 4 PM - 8 PM, dinner 8 PM - 9 PM, shows 9 PM - 1 AM, karaoke 1 - 3 AM (11 hours of shows, 5 hours of sleep)
    Monday: 8 AM - Breakfast & disembarkation

So, following this schedule and effectively balancing the non-show aspects of the trip and averaging 6 hours of sleep per night, you're getting roughly 40 hours of time for shows (30 when considering the above 'shrinkage'). By seeing full shows averaging 50 minutes length, you get to your 35ish sets.

My first year was pretty bad as far as seeing a proper amount of bands. I drank too much since early in the morning, so by 9 pm my poor soul was so inebriated I missed a good couple of shows.

For this year I was wiser, I only slept 4 hours every day and managed to see a total of 40 full sets. Of course I also paced myself with the booze this time.

Don't plan, just roll with it. I just grab someone near me every 30 mins and look at their schedule.

I'll give a +1 to what others have said. I usually end up between 25-30 shows, with a few of those being partial sets. Leaves enough time to chill, sleep, drink, etc.

Side note: For those of us who live the other 361 days a year as early risers (work has me up by 5:30am, so I'm usually in bed by 10:30), that first day is brutal. For three years in a row now, I've tried staying up to catch someone in the 3 or 4am time slots the first night. It has yet to actually happen.

It depends why you're there. If you only want to catch shows, you can catch a lot of them. If you like the pool, you see fewer shows. If you like the absolutely unbeatable socializing, you see fewer shows.

I bring my kids, so I see way fewer shows than most, but I spend more time at the pool, which is also fun. Each year I see more shows as the kids get older and more independent.

Just prioritize the bands you absolutely must see and roll with it. If you're like me you'll find that by day 2 it's easy to say absolutely ridiculous nonsensical things like "Fleshgod Apocalypse in 5 minutes? Eh, I'm kinda tired, and a Long Island iced tea followed by a nap in the sun sounds really amazing right now."
I'm only here to do two things: play the bagpipes and gargle sulphuric acid. Looks like we're almost out of acid.

I tried on a couple of earlier cruises to see at least one song from every band. It's not worth it. We usually end up in the same range as most of the posters here, around 30 sets (counting partial). Don't expect to see everything you plan on seeing. Our seen setlist always ends up much different than the planned one. Too many things come up, being socializing, eating, napping, pooping, whatever.

I seem to remember a late start on the first day last year, which threw my plan out of whack. So I think you're right about not over-planning. Schedule changes can happen as well, which they posted at elevators and I think at our door. You may also figure you'd rather see a band's set at a different venue. A crowded pyramid lounge is no place for short folks who really want to watch drummers :-(

I sort of look at the schedule obsessively the whole time anyway. Maybe the app will help this time. Or just a highlighter...

Shows start up pretty quickly right after muster drill in the lounge and (as I recall) the Studio B "Ice Rink" stage...I remember having to dash over to see Equilibrium in the ice rink after the meet'n'greet one year.
On the other hand, the pool-deck stage is pretty much a non-factor for most of the first day so it's a "lighter" schedule.
I think they've finally realized that scheduling it to open anytime before midnight that first day is wishful thinking. :D

Don't forget about the new feature in the app this year.

Once the schedule is released, you will be able to see all the events and indicate in the app which ones you plan to see. You can then hide all events other then these, and only alert for these events.

Not everyone will use this features, and these features are designed so it can be ignored if this isn't for you, but it will be a good way to setup a plan for what you want to check out. You can always click a button and see all shows and modify the plan on the fly as well.

Will be interested in getting feedback on how people used the app after the cruise. Will probably create a poll and ask folks about what features they did and didn't use at the end of the cruise.

    See you guys on board.

This is all incredibly helpful information. I know not to expect everything to go to plan, but at least this way I know what's realistic. I actually asked this question specifically so I could get the most out of the app!
