    Gig History

    by ShoreSlayer » Sat Jul 03, 2010 6:07 am

Not posting this in Engine Room as lots of it ain't metal...

I was inspired by Lal@'s webpage where he's scanned all his ticket stubs so, when I was ripping through boxes looking for something the other day and found my oldest ticket stubs, I put 'em together with my more recent ones and got busy making this list. I'd love to see the lists of others as I'm sure mine will pale in comparison to many.

One request... Where artists are listed as XXXX w/guests, if you saw that tour or knew of it and can recall who the other bands were on the bill, please reply or PM me so I can edit/update. My memory ain't what it once was by a long shot and I've had to rely on googling to fill in some blanks.

Lost a whole bunch from my teens and early 20’s but here’s what I’ve managed to keep from most recent to the oldest (Events with dates in the future are ones that I’ve purchased tickets to).

No Stubs for these... Just fuzzy memories  Some of the support acts don’t sound familiar at all. For instance, I’m sure I saw the Priest Turbo tour but can’t recall ever seeing Bon Jovi live. I know I was there and that’s who apparently opened... Maybe I arrived late?   And I KNOW I saw Motley Crue open for Ozzy but WAS certain it was on the Diary of a Madman tour in ’82. Curse these aging, poor, mistreated brain cells!!

Damn... I missed it?? ;) hehe!

That's quite an impressive list! You started going to concerts the year I was born  My list, not that I even remember most of them, would be sooo short compared to yours!

If i did something like this it would probably shut down the boards. Seriously, I have been to 700 to 800 concerts.

I have seen every band imaginable live except for The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.

Then there is Party San 2002, 2004

No doubt eh? Yeah, that's sorta what I was referring to when I said mine would pale in comparison to those of others hehe...

Vikingirl... It's not in any way a competition. I'd still love to see your, or anyone else's list as I just find it awesome to see some of the lineups that never came through my neck of the woods or to read and say,'Hey, I was at that tour too!' And thanks for the typo correction! 2011 edit coming up

Thanks but I doubt that. Metalwrath lives in Europe and has been to quite a few festivals but he is only 26 so he might not have been to as many as I have.

hrmm I've never been one to keep ticket stubs. I go to a lot of smaller and local shows, have been to several festivals, and have seen many many tours that have come through.
I doubt they rank up anywhere near as large as some of the aforementioned (and amazing) lists.

I'm jealous of a good number of those shows!!!

Deb- did you see that I saw Heart in August of 1980 in Phoenix? The song "Mistral Wind" live appears on the "Heart Live" album from 1980..

I saw Aldo Nova in 1992 in Seattle. We met him afterwards and my friend Allison had him sign her arm (upper) and then she had me take her up to Seattle Tattoo Emporium and she had it tattooed into her skin.

Yeah, we had been drinking Jager in 95 degree weather and thought it was a good idea.

She covered it up within a year

True - Metalwrath has gone to tons of gigs from what he has said here  , but I still wager you've seen the most of the people on the forum! The age thing does have something to do with it, of course ;) (I speak from experience  ) I just had a funny/weird thought - imagine the year 2030....Metalwrath is 46 and he is writing on some music forum (70,000 Tons of Metal 20th anniversary cruise forum?) and talking about the gigs/festivals he is going to. What bands will be popular then? What new music genres will there be? Which of our favorite musicians will have passed on? .......

Oh cool, thanks for mentioning Dylan... Forgot him when doing the list of gigs I've lost stubs to. Saw Dylan and Tom Petty together one summer and it was great!

Aldo Nova had a big hit on the radio years back called Fantasy and it was quite popular with me and my friends but he didn't go on to much that I'm aware of. I just recall about 5% of the crowd leaving the B.O.C. gig when it was announced he wouldn't be opening for them as planned and people could get refunds if they went to the front within 15 minutes or something. About half of the remaining 95% of the crowd cheered as it meant we got a longer B.O.C. show than usual :D

    So jealous.

Sometime at the beginning of the year, I decided to compile a list of bands I'd seen over my life and how many times, I think I kept it to mostly metal groups. I went on a trip to Wacken 2008 and Bloodstock UK in the same year, plus some Canadian fests and seeing just about every tour that ever came through. I didn't add every local band, though.

    Bands I have seen live:

    Iced Earth (x2)
    Helloween (x2)
    Gamma Ray
    Heaven & Hell
    Megadeth
    Moonsorrow
    Primordial
    Turisas
    Tyr
    Korpiklaani
    Eluveitie
    Alestorm (2x)
    Striker (x7)
    Propagandhi
    GFK
    Between the Buried and Me
    Opeth
    Dream Theater (x2)
    Finntroll
    Ensiferum (x3)
    Avantasia
    Kamelot
    Sonata Arctica (x2)
    Kreator
    Veil of Maya
    Into Eternity
    Firewind
    Arch Enemy
    Dark Tranquility
    Divine Heresy
    Beneath the Massacre
    Dying Fetus
    Divinity
    Neuraxis (2x)
    Necrophagist
    Cloudscape
    Mob Rules
    Primal Fear
    Nightwish
    Gorgoroth
    Negura Bunget
    Cynic
    Archon Legion
    Powerglove (x2)
    Dragonforce
    Hibria
    Iron Maiden (x2)
    Keep of Kalessin

Thought I'd bump this old thread from early July, in case any of the new forum folk might want to add to it.

Ok, I'm throwing in the towel - you and Scott win in the gig history department!

Goddess - We could talk about rock concerts we've been to forever most likely and never finish. Here's just a few comments / questions that come to my mind at the moment.

40 years - yep - I concur - my folks took me to see the Fifth Dimension (up, up, and away in my beautiful balloon!) and The Mamas and the Papas around 1970 (will have to ask them the exact year). Also, we already discussed we were at that same Peter Frampton gig in 1977. Were you at any of the following? (some of my faves from the 70's decade)
Summer 1976. Elton John & Kiki Dee. Chicago Stadium
1978 (not sure of date) Queen (with Freddy!). Chicago Stadium
August 1978. REO Speedwagon. Alpine Valley, WI
Summer 1978. Rolling Stones. Soldier Field.
December 1978. UFO. Randhurst Ice Arena.(lol - a mile from where I grew up in the burbs)
June 1979. Yes. Chicago International Ampitheater

Goddess - that is so cool that we were at so many of the same shows! And Sly and the Family Stone at Grant Park in post race-riot ridden Chicago? Now, THAT is hard-core epicness   First mosh-pit? Damn straight!

I have tried to save most of the tickets to everything I've been to over the years - whether it's a music event (Paris Opera to Wacken), special art exhibition, etc. I think I have at least 90% of them (unfortunately my Frampton 77 and Rolling Stones 78 tix were lost, plus the word Yes on my 1979 Yes ticket stub is cut off!) Below are some of my tickets from shows you and I have recently discussed, plus a few more, just for fun. This is also inspired by German forum member Lal@ who posted a link a while back to his concert ticket collection -

unfortunately the date is cut off of the Queen ticket - it was 1978 I believe
(one of my top 5 gigs of all time - Freddie Mercury - my god!)
    Image

UFO - past and present - they still totally ROCK!
I would have loved to have Phil Mogg sign my 1978 UFO ticket when I saw them a year ago.
    Image

U2 - first and last time I saw them - after that show in 1982 (1st or 2nd US tour?), my college friends and I all agreed ....
that amazing band from Ireland is going to be HUGE.
    Image

I went to tons of shows during my college years at UIUC - with 35,000 students there, it seemed that every band included
Urbana, Illinois on their tours back then....here are just a few of the tickets - name that band!!!

Okay, I know that doesn't really apply here but I thought I'd try....

Oh it's true alright! Especially when buying (women's) clothing. It completely baffles me how an article of clothing that is made from less material than another comparable article of clothing, can cost MORE!

    Hey Rachel,
I'm guessing you're in your 20's, right? I think all of the shows you've been to at such a young age is amazing!  Absolutely LOVE the fact that you have travelled overseas to see Epica and P!nk! That shows awesome dedication and passion - I love that in a person. And seriously, what is life without passion and adventure? :D

I tell my young daughters this all the time - follow your passions, follow your dreams (whatever they may be), make grand future plans, yet don't forget to love where you're at today.

I jokingly asked on some other thread who would be up for the 25th anniversary 70k tons of metal cruise in 2036. I suspect you'll be there!

Now, off to unplug from the Internet and enjoy a long weekend out of town.

no way i could come up with a list that's at least somewhat accurate
i remember my first two gigs (running wild on their pile of skulls tour and axxis on their the big thrill tour) and could probably name most of the bands i've seen so far - but i definitely lost count the moment i've seen some bands for 10+ times
maybe i'll take the time to write down a list...but just maybe...
    wishlist '25:
    Axxis - Doro - Edguy - Frozen Crown - Gatekeeper - Satan - Seven Sisters - Shadowpath - Silex - Skyclad - Steel Attack - Viathyn - Voyager - Wuthering Heights - 4th Dimension

I am, 25 to be exact. I agree! Life would be pretty boring without both and I am lucky that for the time being I am able to do such things.

Oh I would definitely be there! I'd only be 50 years old and would still have some parties left in me! I'd kick it with all the young whipper snappers!

Hey, Rachael - thanks for responding to that 2 month old post of mine ;) :P - but seriously....

I can totally imagine you on the 25th anniversary 70K tons of metal cruise in 2036. :heavydrink: I mean - 50? - no problem for you I'm sure!
As for me, I'll be 74 I think - so not so sure (although never say never is a good motto I think :beerwink: )

....and I've been meaning to say this for a while, next-cabin-door neighbor - even though I'm old enough to be your mother , I promise I won't "cramp your style" or act my age for that matter. :P :beerwink:
