Pffft. That toothy bastard would have no chance to defend itself. It'd just be fartin' around in the water, twiddling it's fins and then BAM. TKO in the first round by this guy.

Or, I could get devoured. It's a big toss up, but I may just consider it for Simone.

    That could be anything from
"I would buy a sandwich for several dollars"
    and
"I would pet a puppy for three minutes"

    to

"I would mutilate a child for johnny depp.."
And likely many more lewd adventures down the path that Deb's mind has definitely taken her

--> That's a good epica tune for sure. I didn't go see them last time they came through town here but I saw them at Tuska a few years back. I'm pretty sure my drummer has that Epica DVD you speak of..

Great tune... immediately made me think of this though:

Massive cheers to those who have mentioned us. Obviously we would absolutely love to be apart of 70,000 tons of Metal :) I'm sure if the organisers have already locked in and confirmed the entire line up privately, then we will be definitely making contact again with them for 2012 if next years is successful.

Thanks again guys! And... yes, we'll happily play the Kylie song if people want to hear it

To get back on track on this thread :)
Certain bands interact more with their fans than others which is fine, but all the bands that go to a cruise such as this one should interact with their fans on a whole other level. I mean you are basically living with one another for a week I'm sure i'll get to know some brilliant ppl on this cruise and hopefully some of my favorite bands. It would be really funny if it turns out you have lot's of things in common with your favorite singer/band/bandmember. On the other hand it could be crap if you have absolutely nothing to talk about with the bandmember (which i don't think would happen after a few beers). I had a great time with the members of dragonforce and in flames which were just brilliant! And i hope to repeat this experience with all the others.

I did the Melloboat cruise in 07, you seriously see band members everywhere you look. I kinda felt bad for Opeth, especially Mike, as they were mobbed pretty much from the time they checked into the cruise (they had to check in with the rest of us), until the time they walked off the boat. Seeing him and his wife push their baby in a stroller on the boat is definitely something I'll never forget though

Someone a few months ago mentioned how Opeth doesn't like to play these type of events. Maybe based on this past experience ?!?!?!

I still don't get the hero worship, these are musicians and normal people. No matter how much I love a band I'm not going to lose my mind and pester them with screams and autograph requests. Heck I wouldn't even know what else to say to them besides the generic "love your music blah, blah, blah".

If you are sitting next to someone at a bar or during a meal and strike up a normal conversation that makes sense. But I still don't get the "oh my god a celebrity" bullshit. You would think metal fans would be above that kinda lameness.

Well, Mr. Cool ;) ... Obviously you're immune to the phenomenon but I'm sure you can understand how it affects others if ya think about some of the finer social/psychological points involved. I mean, I get what you're saying and I'm sure famous people around the world (aside from the spotlight/media whores) wish that fans would get it too but...

The thing is, especially in North America but very much in most developed nations, we live in a sort of 'hero culture'. There's a fair bit of interesting writing and such that's been done on the topic but the relevant part addresses how we elevate those who've succeeded at any kind of noteworthy creative or athletic accomplishment to the stature of (in some cases) gods/goddesses or heroes. Words like worship and idolize get tossed around a lot in regards to 'stars'. We then bask in these messages of how anyone can achieve anything if they just work hard enough and never give up on their dreams etc. When the fact is, the world needs ditch-diggers and secretaries (not trying to put those professions down - just examples of less glorified paths that many people live) more than they need artists and athletes.

Focusing just on musicians, you've got these individuals who've written, sung and/or played something that, for some people, impacted their life in a very deep and meaningful way. Maybe Joe Blow jr. heard a song when he was growing up that helped him get through a real rough time and then, a decade later, that same artist puts out another song or album that Joe connects with even more strongly because both he and the artist have grown and seen much of the same stuff in life and the world. Joe's seen this artist on TV and stage all these years, hell, he even has the posters on his wall, and has formed this kind of regard for them as a person and creative artist that, in some cases, verges on worship. Yes, it's completely off balance considering both Joe and the artist are just people with many of the same daily challenges and stuff, but it is what it is. There's a separation between the common person and our "idols" that creates a very skewed dynamic. Ideally, when the idol and the fan meet, the dynamic is squashed because both get to see the other one as just another cool person with mutual respect for music and other things, but that just doesn't always happen. Often the meeting is just a brief autograph exchange at a meet-n-greet or even just a quick, "Hey, nice to meet ya. Great show. Thanks" and there's no time to even connect like when normal people meet.

I mean, I've been a Priest fan since my early teens so meeting any of the guys would be pretty huge. But if it were just at some autograph signing or something, it would suck cuz I wouldn't have the chance to talk with Glenn or KK about certain solos or talk lyrics with Rob... Even if they were on the cruise (yeah right), I'd likely be one of over a thousand people who want the chance to hang with them and chat and I can imagine myself tripping over my words a little. I mean really, I find the idea of sitting at an on board dining table with Lemmy, Halford, Alex Skolnick and the guys from Trouble and Raven to be oddly surreal. I'd seriously have to look around and ask if wasn't all just some strange freaking dream...

I've been fortunate enough to meet a couple artists/athletes who I was/am a big fan of in situations where it was all pretty laid back and I think I stayed cool and kept at least my part of the interaction relatively normal. Mostly out of an awareness of the dynamic and a respect for the person as an individual and not wanting to intrude on their "off" time and be an A-hole. But I can also think of a few artists where meeting them might be a bit of a mind-fluck for me and I can't say for sure how I'd act. I'm pretty reserved in public for the most part so it's more likely that I'd just freeze up and not know wtf to say but if I'd had a few too much to drink or smoke I might babble like a moron about how great I think their music is or something cliche like that.

Damn my ADD sucks when it comes to writing and staying on track lol...

Thing is, when Joe meets the artist after all these years, the whole thing can be totally out of whack. The artist has absolutely no clue who Joe is (other than random fan #455,832) while Joe has this entire thing built up in his head of someone whose music, words and image have been part of his life for years. Someone who, in many cases, has never let him down, done no wrong and been a constant source of entertainment, inspiration, insight and even emotional support/comfort on a very regular basis. Joe may feel he'll never again get a chance to talk to this person who he'd probably like to talk to for hours and the artist really has very little interest in Joe aside from maybe giving him the respect that most artists try to afford their fans. I'm sure most artists get accustomed to it in some way and develop strategies for putting the over the top fans at ease a little. But it's gotta be weird for them and I just think it's a little too easy to write off the overzealous or star-struck fan as being some kind of idiot.

Some people are just very much ruled by their emotions and music can be a very big part of a person's emotional world. The entire culture of artist/fan keeps the fans at a bit of a distance in many ways. For someone from some small town, or maybe a sheltered life, who's never met anyone famous, I think a little OMG Holy Crap can be forgiven no?

    And... end essay

WOW!!!! ShoreSlayer, very well said! And damn, you must be bored dude. I'm just kidding man, it was a very well thought out, and directly put essay. Well done sir.
My thoughts on meeting celebrities anymore is just not to make a jackass of yourself. I mean, yes they're famous, they may have more money than you  , and you DON'T know them no matter how much you may see them in TV or movies. I worked at a resort in Arizona where I saw celebrities all the time. At first it was like  And then it was kinda
So I guess I pretty much got acclamated to the celeb waters after a while. If you've never seen a celeb, I can understand the anxiety and shock. But I myself would be embarrassed if someone I didn't know came up to me in awe! :?
Meeting athletes, movie stars, politicians, TV icons, and so have you became no big deal. Shaking hands with Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was cool though! :headbanger:
But the best thing to do when you meet a celebrity is to treat them like a hot vixen at the bar...
    A. Make a conversation and be cool, or...
    B. Say what you want or get an autograph and take a hike.
If you hang around and follow people, that's not cool. I've seen autograph hounds start fights for nothing... all because they wanted an autograph, after they got an autograph. It's incredible, and sad really.
So for the concert amateurs here (which probably aren't many) and for metal's sakes, if you meet one of musical icons on this cruise (I know I will) just sit down, have a drink, and talk. Or in the autograph line just thank them for their time and amazing performance on stage, and then move on.

Yes I am Mr. Cool. And your point makes sense, but it just illustrates how illogical people can be over these things & that YOU might need some medication if Priest is booked for this

I "maybe" could "partially" understand this if you were meeting the President or The Beatles, but not 'metal musicians'. I guess I'm too normal

I have to admit that I want to hear the bands more than anything, but I do want to get several of the bands to sign some of my stuff. I think that it will be cool to have some pictures an autos of some of my favorite bands. That is just my two cents worth. But worship them?? Naw :viking: :beerhorns: :beerhorns:
