For anyone feeling particularly charitable during the holiday season St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee is an excellent charity . Very high amount of the contributions go directly to helping the kids , many of them are extremely sick with cancer and other serious illnesses .

    Kangaroo

In Australia a common Christmas song is ‘Six White Boomers’ which depicts Santa Claus giving his reindeers a rest when he gets to Australia and instead uses six white kangaroos! In the song, Santa also changes into some cooler clothes to cope with the much warmer climate down under.

    Rooster

In some cultures, often Latino, they celebrate Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day and will attend an early morning mass on the morning of Christmas Eve called Misa de Gallo which means Roosters Mass. It is named after the rooster as the bird was the first to announce the birth of Christ by crowing at midnight. It is said this is the only time a rooster has crowed this early .

    Donkey

Donkeys are sometimes seen as sacred as they are said to have carried Mary from Nazareth to Bethlehem when she was pregnant with Jesus. It is also said that donkeys have a cross on their back as they helped carry Jesus to Bethlehem, and donkeys are commonly depicted in the nativity scene during the birth of Christ. There is a Christmas song ‘Little Donkey’ about the donkey which carries Mary.

    Robin

Robins are often associated with Christmas and portrayed in a snowy scene on the front of our Christmas cards. In Victorian times, the postmen wore bright red coats and so were give the nickname robins. Robins were then depicted on Christmas cards as carrying cards in their beaks – representing the postmen or “robins” who would be delivering Christmas cards and greetings.

    Wren

In some countries, such as Ireland, Boxing Day is referred to as St Stephens Day. On this day, there is a very old tradition – so old it has nearly died out – to form a procession and hold a long pole with a wren inside a holly bush while singing a song about the bird. These were known as the Wren Boys Procession. Fortunately, wrens are no longer used in the procession.

    Partridge

The partridge is most commonly associated to Christmas because of the song ’12 Days of Christmas’, where the first gift is a partridge in a pear tree. This song is commonly believed to be gifts given by a true love. However, the ‘true love’ mentioned in the song represents god and the partridge in the pear tree represents Jesus Christ. In fact, all the gifts mentioned in the song have a religious connotation.

    Goat

In Sweden and other Scandinavian countries, a common Christmas decoration is a straw goat which is known as the Yule Goat. The straw relates to the last harvest – as the last sheath of grain from the harvest is believed to have magical properties. It is also thought this dates to worshiping Thor who rode through the sky with flying goats. The Yule goat has also been regarded as a spirit which visits households to make sure the yule preparations are underway.

In some countries, such as Poland, Finland and Denmark it is a tradition to involve animals in Christmas but by giving things to them. In Poland, when sharing round a traditional sweet biscuit they will also give some to the animals as there is a myth it will enable them to speak at midnight. In Denmark, there is a tradition to go and walk in the woods to feed the birds and other animals. And in Finland, it is tradition to hang food on trees for the birds and the animals to eat.

    Reindeer

These famous Christmas icons have developed over time, taking myths and stories from numerous cultures such as Father Christmas, Saint Nicolas and Sinterklaas. The older legends were never depicted with reindeer, in fact this part of the story came later and is believed to have been introduced through the poem ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ by Clement Clarke Moore in the 19th Century. The most famous reindeer – Rudolph – came even later in 1939 when an employee of a department store called Robert L. May was asked to create a Christmas story to increase marketing.

Children in Brazil often receive gifts from the Magi on Three Kings Day, or Epiphany, as well as from Papai Noel on Christmas Eve. With no use for chimneys in the tropical climate, they believe Papai Noel enters via the front door, and travels via helicopter rather than a reindeer-drawn sleigh.

    Venezuela
For some unique reason, locals in Caracas attend Christmas morning mass each year via roller skates. The tradition is so popular that all the city roads are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety. Families then come home to enjoy a Christmas dinner of tamales.

    GERMANY: THE CHRISTMAS PICKLE

Everyone has different ways of decorating their Christmas tree. For some people, it's a certain color scheme. For other people, it's a whole collection of sentimental ornaments. And for people in Germany? There's one special ornament that always goes on the Christmas tree. What is it? A pickle

It's tradition in Germany to hide a pickle ornament somewhere in the Christmas tree, deep within the branches of the tree. On Christmas Eve, the children all search the tree for the pickle. Whoever spots it first is said to get a special reward from St. Nicholas himself! Today, people keep with this tradition and adorn their tree with a pickle

    Mexico: ‘Feliz Navidad!’
In 1828, the American minister to Mexico, Joel R. Poinsett, brought a red-and-green plant from Mexico to America. As its coloring seemed perfect for the new holiday, the plants, which were called poinsettias after Poinsett, began appearing in greenhouses as early as 1830. In 1870, New York stores began to sell them at Christmas. By 1900, they were a universal symbol of the holiday.

In Mexico, papier-mâché sculptures called piñatas are filled with candy and coins and hung from the ceiling. Children then take turns hitting the piñata until it breaks, sending a shower of treats to the floor. Children race to gather as much of the loot as they can.

Christmas Traditions in China The small number of Christians in China call Christmas Sheng Dan Jieh, which means Holy Birth Festival. They decorate their homes with evergreens, posters, and bright paper chains. Families put up a Christmas tree, called a "tree of light," and decorate it with beautiful lanterns, flowers, and red paper chains that symbolize happiness. They cut out red pagodas to paste on the windows, and they light their houses with paper lanterns, too.

    Philippines

If you thought the United States went all out with Christmas decorations, you should see what the Philippines does. Every year, the city of San Fernando holds Ligligan Parul (or Giant Lantern Festival), that features dazzling parols (lanterns) that symbolize the Star of Bethlehem. Each parol consists of thousands of spinning lights that illuminate the night sky. The festival has made San Fernando the "Christmas Capital of the Philippines."

    Iceland

Much like the United States has the 12 days of Christmas, Iceland celebrates 13. Each night before Christmas, Icelandic children are visited by the 13 "Yule Lads." After placing their shoes by the window, the little ones will head upstairs to bed. In the morning, they'll either have received candy (if they're good) or be greeted with shoes full of rotten potatoes if they're bad. And you thought coal was terrible gift!
